Four Frontier Focused Decks for Thunder Junction Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. It's been a couple of weeks since Outlaws of Thunder Junction was released, and I'm back with a few more new decks that you can use at your local events or against your friends. Let's get started.

Orzhov Caustic Bronco Combo

The first deck I have for you features Caustic Bronco, and is capable of dealing a massive amount of damage when it attacks. Let's take a look at the deck.

Caustic Bronco
Shadow of Mortality

This deck focuses on the combo potential that Caustic Bronco has with Shadow of Mortality. If you're able to attack with Caustic Bronco while it is saddled, you can cause your opponent to lose 15 points of life as long as you are able to reveal Shadow of Mortality from the top of your library. To help ensure this will happen, you can cast Insatiable Avarice. By using its top ability, you can search your library for Shadow of Mortality and place it on top of your library.

While this deck relies heavily on this combo to dish out a ton of damage, you can also win games with the other creatures in this deck. Steel Seraph can provide any creature you control with your choice of flying, lifelink, or vigilance during your turn. There's also a playset of Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, who is arguably the best Black creature currently in Standard. While Sheoldred is on the battlefield, you can win games without ever attacking.

Grixis Outlaw Mill

Next, I have a deck that features one of my favorite alternate ways of winning games, milling your opponent's deck. Let's check it out.

Deepmuck Desperado
This deck utilizes a pair of Outlaws to help you mill through your opponent's deck. Deepmuck Desperado allows you to mill three cards from your opponent's deck once per turn when you commit a crime. To help with that is Laughing Jasper Flint. While he is in play, at the beginning of your upkeep, you'll get to exile an amount of cards from your opponent's library equal to the number of Outlaws you control. You'll also be able to cast those cards using mana of any color that turn.

While these two creatures could be enough to allow you to completely mill your opponent's deck, this deck also includes a playset of Jace, the Perfected Mind. By using Jace's -X loyalty ability, you can mill 15 cards from your opponent's deck at once, assuming you've cast Jace without paying life for his Phyrexian mana. By just using a couple of these effects, your opponent's deck will quickly be depleted.

Sultai Control

Next, I have a control deck for you that features Atraxa, Grand Unifier as its win condition. Let's take a look at the deck.

Atraxa, Grand Unifier
Atraxa, Grand Unifier pulls her weight as a great finisher for this deck. With her massive 7/7 stats, plus the ability to add numerous cards to your hand when she enters the battlefield, your opponent is in for a world of hurt. There have been many times that I've gone to cast Atraxa, and my opponent has conceded on the spot before she has resolved.

To help you live long enough to be able to cast Atraxa, this deck includes a pair of artifacts that can help keep your life total high. The Celestus will give you one life whenever it changes from night to day or day to night. There's also a pair of Ancient Cornucopia that will give you a variable amount of life based on the mana required to cast a spell. You can even make copies of Ancient Cornucopia with Three Steps Ahead as a means of additional life and extra mana production.

Gruul Midrange

The final deck I have for you is a Gruul deck that features Calamity, Galloping Inferno. Let's take a look at the deck.

Calamity, Galloping Inferno
Whenever you attack with Calamity, Galloping Inferno you'll be able to create two creature tokens that are copies of a creature that saddled Calamity. Since Calamity is the only legendary creature in this deck, you don't need to worry about not having a target to copy. This ability can get out of hand when you have creatures like Railway Brawler saddling Calamity.

In addition to all of the damage you can deal from attacking, let's not overlook an additional source of damage. If you happen to have Terror of the Peaks on the battlefield, those creature tokens that Calamity makes when attacking while saddled will cause Terror of the Peaks to deal damage to any target. That makes it very possible to defeat your opponent in one fell swoop.

Wrapping Up

From aggro decks to control decks, and everywhere in between, there's sure to be a deck you'll enjoy in our current Standard environment. Each of the decks I've brought you this week features its own means of winning. I can't wait to try all of these out on Magic Arena, because they all scratch a certain itch I have when playing Magic. Which one is your favorite?

What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
