One of the most exciting things about Modern is that almost anything is possible. The format is a mish-mash of superstar archetypes of Standard formats past, but there are also decks like Lantern Control that could never have existed without a larger card pool. That said, it's possible to take most any archetype that has been a top tier competitor in Standard, add a few powerful threats, answers, or engine cards that are available in your colors, and have a completely reasonable Modern deck. Take, for example, this take on Midrange:
White-Blue Midrange - Modern | Brivenix, 5-0 Modern League
- Creatures (20)
- 2 Glory-Bound Initiate
- 2 Kitchen Finks
- 2 Reflector Mage
- 2 Restoration Angel
- 2 Selfless Spirit
- 2 Snapcaster Mage
- 2 Vendilion Clique
- 3 Spell Queller
- 3 Thraben Inspector
- Planeswalkers (2)
- 2 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar
- Instants (10)
- 1 Cryptic Command
- 2 Opt
- 2 Path to Exile
- 2 Spell Snare
- 3 Mana Leak
- Sorceries (4)
- 2 Oust
- 2 Serum Visions
- Artifacts (2)
- 2 Smuggler's Copter
This is a deck that is very much reminiscent of the Flash decks that we saw in Standard over the last couple of years. Thraben Inspector, Smuggler's Copter, and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar were mainstays of that archetype, and are part of the core of this deck. In addition to those, you have Kitchen Finks and Glory-Bound Initiate to hold the ground and ensure your life total stays out of the red zone. Spell Queller, Vendilion Clique, and Restoration Angel give you instant-speed interaction that doubles as threats so that you can play a traditional tempo style of game.
On top of all of that, you have access to the full suite of Modern's powerful cantrips and interactive spells. Opt and Snapcaster Mage play particularly well with your instant-speed gameplan, but Serum Visions is powerful enough that it's hard to justify cutting it. The rest of the deck is rounded out with a suite of Mana Leaks, Spell Snares, and Cryptic Commands for counterspells and Path to Exile and Oust as removal spells.
There are lots of interesting options for this style of deck. Some builds opt for Rattlechains and Geist of Saint Traft to allow you to protect your Spell Quellers and play powerful threats at instant-speed. Several years ago, we saw builds that featured Spellstutter Sprite, more Mutavaults, and even Sword of Feast and Famine. All in all, if you're looking for a way to play a tempo deck, this is a great build to start with, and there's plenty of opportunities to customize your build to beat your local metagame.
