Cast through Time #12 – Guillaume-Gate

Reddit

Hey, guys. This was a weird week in podcasting, wasn't it? With the New Phyrexia leak happening so early, there hasn't been a ton to talk about now that everyone has expressed their initial feelings about the set. Most shows were pretty light on news this week, though everyone had a bit to say about the news that Guillaume Matignon and Guillaume Wafo-Tapa have been banned as a result of the leak. There are also some strong feelings about the revelation that a "godbook" was made available to a Pro Tour competitor.

In column news, we are going to be testing out a new format. Recapping twenty shows per week was becoming a bit taxing so I will be focusing instead on a few of the shows I really feel everyone should hear about each week. I will pepper in other notables when necessary and will continue to keep an ear out for exciting new shows to share with you all.

All that said, let's get moving!

CommanderCast #25 – The People's Episode

Running time 1 hour 37 minutes on 5/3/11

  • Andy and Carlos host the very first CommanderCast call-in show.
  • Super Community Segment
    • First caller Brad asks the guys for their thoughts on threat assessment and targeting prioritization in Commander. Many people feel that other players in their playgroup have poor threat assessment, but is this accurate?
    • Second caller Chris wants to know how much targeted land destruction is enough. How much is too much?
    • Justin calls in to ask about everyone's color preferences. How many colors do you like to run and why?
    • Jars wants to know, what kind of Commander deck can be made using the restriction of white-bordered-only cards?
    • Omar asks the hosts' opinions about playgroups using their own banned lists, and how they feel about "tuck" effects.
    • Calvin wants to know what everyone thinks about building decks that win and play well but leave you not having any fun.
    • Adrian poses a very interesting topic: What does everyone think about the fact that the Scars of Mirrodin block seems to be designed with a very heavy Commander focus?
    • Shoe asks for everyone's opinions on a multiplayer format known as the Ultimate Showdown, which requires sixteen people to play. Check it out on his Wooberg site.

  • For a first call-in show, the guys did a great job handling the increased number of people on the show. Definitely check it out; this was a great episode.

CrazyTalk #8 – Can You Be My Friend, Patrick?

Running time 2 hours 10 minutes on 4/29/11

  • KYT, Jonathan, Alex, and Frank are joined by Patrick Chapin.
  • Patrick Chapin's "The Five":
    • How did you get into Legacy?
      • "I started playing Legacy because they invented it." Basically, Patrick has been playing for so long that he just naturally moved in to Legacy.

    • What is your favorite Magic card and why?
    • What would you like to be known for in the Magic community?
      • "An undying love for the game."

    • If you were in a bar fight and could pick any Magic player to join you in the fight, who would it be?
      • Dan Burdick

    • What's the craziest thing you've ever done?
      • "I tried cutting Gabe Walls at the World Championships in 2007."
      • "Hung out with Eminem the night Kim [his wife] tried to commit suicide."

  • To really kick the show off, Jonathan asks Patrick about playing the High Tide mirror match.
  • KYT describes his experience playing Affinity at the Star City Games Open series in Boston, asking Patrick's opinion on whether he should continue playing it (Hint: Patrick recommends upgrading to Merfolk).
  • Jonathan gets Patrick talking for a bit about Team America as a deck, why he and Gerry Thomson do not like Stifle in the deck, and what impact Mental Misstep will have.
  • This leads into a discussion of the various cards from New Phyrexia that will have an impact on the Legacy format.
  • Before Patrick has to leave the show, he talks a bit about his upcoming MtG hip-hop album with Bill Boulden. Together they are known as Tha Gatherin'. Their eponymous debut will be available on May 9. Be sure to stay tuned through the end of the podcast for a great preview track.

The Eh Team #34 – Fawkin Scombags

Running time 1 hour 38 minutes on 5/2/11

  • KYT, JayBoosh, Scotty, and Jesse are joined on The Eh Team this week by Sam Stoddard of Star City Games and the In Contention podcast.
  • KYT spends a few moments asking Sam some questions about his history with Magic, before Jesse breaks the news to the crew about the banning of Guillaume Matignon and Guillaume Wafo-Tapa in the wake of the New Phyrexia spoiler leak.
  • Sam and the guys discuss the leak and the repercussions for the players involved.
  • KYT describes his experience at SCG: Boston, where he went 7–2–1 piloting Caw-Blade to a twenty-fourth-place finish (seven Caw-Blade mirrors!)
  • The guys also have an interesting conversation about unintentional draws in competitive play and talk at length about some of the New Phyrexia cards.

The Eh Team #35 – New Phyrexia Spoilercast

Running time 2 hours 36 minutes on 5/6/11

  • KYT, Scotty, and JayBoosh are joined again by Nick and Sean from Phoenix Comics (you may remember them from The Eh Team #23)
  • Nick and Sean do a great job of joining our weekly heroes to discuss the cards of New Phyrexia, particularly the commons and uncommons, as the review is focused primarily on limited play at the prerelease.
  • Filled with #win, Nick falls asleep about two hours into the show. Don't let this be an indication of the quality of the show, though. The guys' review was really great.

Limited Resources #81 – You Compleat Me – NPH Set Review Part 2

Running time 2 hours 17 minutes on 5/6/11

  • Marshall and Ryan are back just in time to wrap up their review of the commons and uncommons of New Phyrexia.
  • This week, the guys are talking about the Blue, Black, Red, and Green commons and uncommons.

Monday Night Magic #257 – Osama Wrapped in Bacon

Running time 1 hour on 5/3/11

The Third Power #13 – Commonly Phyrexian!

Running time 1 hour 54 minutes on 5/2/11

  • Adam Styborski joins Usman on The Third Power this week to talk about New Phyrexia.
  • What cards, particularly commons in New Phyrexia, will have an impact on the Cube format?

Top 8 Magic – Freeking with Flores about Blue and White

Running time 1 hour 22 minutes on 5/3/11

  • Mike Flores and Brian-David Marshall discuss Blue and White cards in New Phyrexia.
  • The show kicks off with a discussion of the Guillaume Matignon and Guillaume Wafo-Tapa banning. If this is something you've been interested in, this is a good show to listen to, as the guys do have some inside insight.
  • Steve Sadin jumps in and out of the discussion as Mike and BDM move on to talk about some of the Blue and White cards in New Phyrexia.

Yo! MTG Taps! #64 – Badder Batterskull feat. Spruke

Running time 53 minutes on 5/6/11

  • Joey and Bigheadjoe are joined this week by Bill Boulden, who is also known as Spruke and more recently known as Tha Gatherin' with Patrick Chapin.
  • Joey also reviews the Standard and Legacy portions of the Star City Games Open: Charlotte.
  • The Joes and Bill discuss the banning of Guillaume Matignon and Guillaume Wafo-Tapa and the community response to the news that a Pro Tour competitor was given a copy of the full spoiler before any other pros had access.
  • To end the show on a positive note, the guys talk about the cards of the new set for a bit.
