CommanderCast #18 – Knife Fights and Pro Wrestling
Running time 1 hour 18 minutes
- Hosts Andy, Byron, and Carlos are joined by guest Levi this week to discuss building your Commander decks with a balance of flavor and power.
- Community Segment: Roundtable discussion
- This week's community roundtable topic is Primeval Titan.
- Is Primeval Titan too good for Commander? Is he the best creature in the format?
- This was a good discussion about a card that can really put one player so far ahead on mana that it might not be good for the format.
- Community Segment: Power vs. Flavor
- The guys discuss building Commander decks, and the considerations that different players give to their card choices.
- What is more important in Commander: flavorful decks that are fun to play but might not be quite as competitive, or powerful decks that run widely accepted "best cards"?
- This is the type of question that is best answered by individual players and playgroups. Depending on what your style of play is, you may be content to build a Pirate deck because it's fun, win or lose. Other players may feel the complete opposite, preferring to build a deck with the sole intention of winning every game. Finally, some players may meet in the middle by building flavorful decks that make room for strong staple cards.
- Strategy Segment: Holding Your Answers
- The guys discuss the idea of holding back answer cards in a Commander game. Holding back answers can often pay off in the form of card advantage.
- Technology: Break My Card
- This week's Break My Card is the Weatherlight rare Psychic Vortex.
- Technology: Secret Tech
- The show's guest, Levi, provides the three commons, three uncommons, and three rares that he considers Secret Tech—cards that may not be on players' radars.
CrazyTalk # 3 – The Legacy Revolution
Running time 1 hour 58 minutes
- KYT, Alex, Frank, and Jonathan are back with another Legacy-specific show.
- The show kicks off with a question (from me!) about buying into Legacy on MTGO where there is no reprint policy. (Special shout-out from me to KYT for the props!)
- Jonathan enlightens KYT and the listeners about what the reprint policy is and how it impacts Legacy.
- Jonathan makes the excellent point that if your primary concern is playing Magic: The Gathering, and specifically playing Legacy, your best bet is to just buy the cards and play the game. There is a chance to lose money if the cards are reprinted, but that should not be your primary concern.
- KYT guides the topic of the show to recent Star City Games Legacy Opens and the seemingly wide-open nature of the metagame, asking the other hosts for their thoughts on the approach to take in preparing for a tournament.
- Jonathan and Alex Go for the Throat for a while about card choices in popular decks.
- KYT and Frank spend some time discussing the Affinity deck they've been working on and card choices for various different builds.
- To wrap up the show, KYT asks for everyone's thoughts on the recent updating of major online retailers' Legacy buy lists.
- Once again, at the risk of losing any illusion of independence I have here on this column, I love getting shout-outs. Thanks, KYT!
The Eh Team #29 – Sea of Dudes
Running time 1 hour 49 minutes
- KYT, ScottyMac, and JayBoosh kick off the show with Smi77y missing.
- To kick off the show, the guys discuss their success at Mirrodin Besieged Game Day (KYT took it down; Jay and Scotty both made Top 8.)
- The guys pose an interesting question: Why is attendance at Game Day so much lower than prereleases, etc.?
- Game Day also provides a good segue into an interesting discussion about store entry fees and prize payouts.
- The guys spend a fair amount of time talking about Boros and Caw-Blade, and which versions are optimal.
- At about 33 minutes in, Smi77y finally joins the show to discuss the Green/White aggro deck he and Scotty brewed that Scotty played at Game Day.
- Caw-Blade and its various versions get a fair amount of discussion for a significant portion of the rest of the show. If you are going to be playing any competitive Standard events in the next few weeks, this is a great place to start your research for tech. You are going to run into a lot of Caw-Blade in all forms, and the guys really thoroughly cover all options.
- ScottyMac covers a mono-White control list that won a Standard Daily event on MTGO.
- Jay addresses the question of what the next and final Sword (of Mirrodin/Scars of Mirrodin) will be. What might it be called, and what abilities will it provide?
- The guys also brainstorm possible directions the Standard metagame might take in the coming weeks, specifically additions to Boros.
- The guys shout out to Star City Games for their Open series and wrap up with shout-outs.
Forcespikes #19 – 3 Things to Know about Gfabs
Running time 57 minutes
- This week, John and Greg are joined by a few guests, including Gerard Fabiano, who has created a new website, 3thingstoknow.com.
- The guys have a few questions for Gerard about the Blue/White/Black version of Caw-Blade that he played at SCG: Edison.
- Gerard also provides his thoughts on the current metagame and the direction he expects it to take next.
- Gerard gives his thoughts on Standard, Extended, and Legacy, and how the power levels of cards in each format help to make each very different.
- Greg and the others reflect on the current Standard metagame and what developments may occur by the time Grand Prix: Dallas rolls around.
- The topic of GP: Dallas brings with it discussion of the newly increased price to enter Grand Prixes.
The Hardcast #7 – LSV vs. the World
Running time 1 hour 3 minutes
- Tristan-Shaun Gregson and Robert Martin review the week in ChannelFireball.com articles.
- Product Review of the Week is the newly available Mirrodin Besieged faction box.
- Tristan's Top Five Buys and Sells of the week:
- Demon of Death's Gate
- Wall of Omens
- All Is Dust
- Nissa Revane
- Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas
- Lotus Cobra
- Sword of Body and Mind
- Hero of Bladehold
- Mirran Crusader
- Candelabra of Tawnos
- Tristan provides his suggestion for what to play at FNM this week (the full deck list is available in the show notes).
In Contention #42 – Building a Legacy
Running time 1 hour 13 minutes
- Awesome! The show starts (and wraps up) with some Ratatat!
- Sam Stoddard and Kranny host the latest installment of In Contention, discussing how to get into the Legacy format.
- Because Legacy is growing in popularity recently, the guys want to present an episode providing advice to listeners on how to get started, whether you choose paper Magic or MTGO.
- The show kicks off with the guys brainstorming reasons that they believe Legacy is becoming more popular, with the primary theory being that limited card pools in smaller formats like Standard and Extended lead to some stagnation (Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Stoneforge Mystic, Squadron Hawks, Sword of Body and Mind, and Sword of Feast and Famine in the current Standard).
- The show goes on to recommend a few good decks to start with in Legacy. The guys recommend playing decks whose cards can be played in multiple other decks, thus not limiting future deck choices and getting the best "bang for your buck."
- Top five cards that a player should pick up to run the greatest number of decks:
- Wasteland
- Force of Will
- Sensei's Divining Top
- original dual lands
- Tarmogoyf
Limited Resources #74 – Strictly Speaking
Running time 1 hour 27 minutes
- Ryan and Marshall cover a variety of topics this week—a "topical grab bag," as they call it in the show notes.
- Marshall kicks off the show with a discussion of the Extended PTQ that he played in with the hopes of qualifying for Pro Tour: Nagoya.
- Ryan discusses ratings and whether a person's rating should be representative of his or her authority on Magic.
- This week's Crack-a-Pack:
- Divine Offering
- Mirran Mettle
- Gnathosaur
- Mirran Spy
- Hexplate Golem
- Horrifying Revelation
- Pistus Strike
- Rusted Slasher
- Spread the Sickness
- Vivisection
- Peace Strider
- Kemba's Legion
- Phyrexian Juggernaut
- Massacre Wurm
- Pretty obvious first pick here. The guys take Massacre Wurm and don't really look back.
- Marshall recounts a recent experience of his playing a Cube draft.
- The guys then move onto a detailed discussion on the term "strictly better," what it actually means, and how it should be used.
The Magic Show #225 – Return to Form
Running time 12 minutes
- Evan wastes no time getting into it with this week's show. He jumps right in by voicing his disappointment that Wizards of the Coast has still not released the name of the next set, the third in the Scars of Mirrodin block.
- Evan also praises the flavor and notes his excitement for the recently announced fall set: Innistrad.
- Reviewing Wizards' PAX East previews, Evan shares his thoughts on Gideon and Sorin being included in Magic 2012.
- Providing a new segment this week, Evan moves on to his "Open Series Update," covering the most recent tech and cards to look out for in Standard and Legacy.
- Star City Games is now allowing local game stores to host Invitational Qualifiers. Evan provides info to store owners regarding how to have one of their own.
- Evan also covers the most recent developments in the Standard metagame.
- Another new segment this week was the entertaining MtG Theater. Elspeth, Garruk, Sarkhan, Sorin, Gideon, and Jace discuss their recent exploits (and love of ham, in Garruk's case) over drinks.
- If Evan's recent format change turned you off to The Magic Show, I suggest giving this episode a shot. I think he may have really hit the nail on the head with this episode.
Magic TV – Top 8 of the Week: Sweet Standard Cards
Running time 16 minutes
- Tristan, Humphrey, and LSV come together again, this week to discuss the Standard cards they are excited about this week. I'll list them here, but be sure to tune in to hear LSV's excellent insight on each of these cards.
- Their favorite cards of the week are:
Nameless Podcast #2 – Choosing a Name
Running time 1 hour 49 minutes
- Jonathan, Frank, Trick, and J.R. are back with the second episode of their show.
- They received 643 submissions for the Name-the-'Cast contest.
- Announcing . . . Untapped as the new podcast name!
- Runner-up name was Unsleeved.
- Moving on to Magic news, Frank brings up Wizards of the Coast's recent announcement of Innistrad, focusing in particular on the fact that Richard Garfield was a part of the design team.
- The guys make their predictions and exchange conjecture about the storyline that will take place in the new set.
- The crew also discuss the upcoming spring set, still known only as "Action."
- The guys then examine the idea of "strictly better" inspired by the same Twitter conversation that happened during the week.
- Jonathan presents as a topic of discussion: Drew Levin's game loss at the last Star City Games Open for presenting (mistakenly) a fifty-nine-card deck. Should he have received a game loss for this? The judge upheld the rules as they are written, but some people have debated the appropriateness of the ruling.
- Can you believe what foil Squadron Hawks are selling for?!?
- The guys discuss the reasons they believe Legacy is exploding in popularity, and their individual approaches for buying in.
- I think the guys make an excellent point about taking baby steps into Legacy, giving the example of buying Ravnica dual lands instead of the original dual lands (while noting that they are inferior).
- The same roll call that resulted in my coming to write for ManaNation.com also turned up Titus Chalk, who has written a heavily discussed article, Women in Magic: The Game's Lost Tribe. The guys spend a good deal of time really talking about the article and talking about the idea of women in article.
ManaNation #120 – Interviewing Zac Hill & Mark Rosewater
Running time 14 minutes
- Trick Jarrett sits down with Mark Rosewater and Zac Hill to discuss recent Magic developments.
- The interview kicks off with Mark's and Zac's thoughts on Mirrodin and the Phyrexian invasion.
- Trick also asks the million-dollar question: Everyone loves full art land so much, why not do it in every set?
- Wow, Trick asks some pretty great questions. It was pretty cool to hear that Wizards of the Coast maintains a record of the decks that are designed in the Future-Future League. You have to wonder how many just escaped the general Magic-playing public.
- Mark explains the origin of the terms for the psychographic profiles, the differences between the Big Three (Timmy, Johnny, and Spike) and Melvin and Vorthos, and the existence of the various psychographics in the Wizards of the Coast design pit.
- Even more so than from simply reading his weekly articles, you really get the sense in this interview that Mark Rosewater both cares about and understands his audience (the people who play Magic: The Gathering).
Monday Night Magic #250 – The Decimal Do-We System
Running time 2 hours
- Episode #250 is a very special live episode!
- Tom Gustafson, Chris Otwell, Conley Woods, Jack Lacroix, Gavin Verhey, Robert Martin, and The Djinn are live on the air to cover Magic news and take calls from listeners.
- Conley begins the show discussion by recounting his recent Magic-related travels, which have kept him away from the show recently.
- Tom moves on to recent Magic news:
- At PAX East, Wizards of the Coast unveiled Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012, teased Magic 2012 with images of the five Planeswalkers to be in the set, and previewed two brand-new cards that will be in this summer's upcoming Commander preconstructed decks.
- Monday Night Magic co-host Gavin Verhey won the Wizards of the Coasts' recent Duel Deck contest with his preconstructed Phyrexian deck.
- Monday Night Magic sends congratulations to Great Designer Search 2 winner Ethan Fleischer.
- TCGPlayer.com has changed the prize payout structure of their tournament series. Prizes will now be adjusted based on attendance.
- Chris Otwell and The Djinn discuss the live audio coverage they recorded at Grand Prix: Denver.
- The guys then wrap up their planned talking points and move onto listener e-mails and begin adding listeners calling in to join the show.
- This was a really great episode, and it really didn't feel like a two-hour show. I have to reiterate here that Tom is an excellent podcast host. There must have been at least ten people on the show at one point, which seems to me would feel like herding cats, but the show never really goes wildly off topic, and dead air time is kept to a minimum.
MTGCast Interviews the Men of Magic: Jon Loucks
Running time 1 hour 4 minutes
- Robert Martin interviews Jon Loucks
- The guys talk about Jon's experience at Grand Prix: Portland, his writing and deck-building, working for Microsoft as a game designer, and more.
- As always, Robert offers us a great interview with an interesting Magic personality.
Running time 51 minutes
- Justin Treadway kicks off his new podcast series, in which he plans to sit down with players and community members in order to give us an opportunity to get to know them
- The show's first guest is Thea Steele, Star City Games columnist and Cube enthusiast.
- This seems like it's really going to be an interesting new show, and a great companion to the MTGCast Interviews the Men of Magic series. I think it's great that we have a few places to turn to get to know more of the community members whose names we see on Twitter or in articles.
The Third Power #9 – Slaughtering Some Sacred Cows
Running time 1 hour 46 minutes
- Usman and Anthony are back this week to discuss the merits of common cards in Cube that they don't care for.
- (Thanks to the guys for the shout-outs to the column and to me personally regarding the CPA exam.)
- As always, the show kicks off with a Cube Crack-a-Pack:
- Vendilion Clique
- Grand Arbiter Augustin IV
- Trygon Predator
- Selesnya Sanctuary
- Fulminator Mage
- Wickerbough Elder
- Pristine Angel
- Gifts Given
- Deranged Hermit
- Azorius Chancery
- Orzhov Basilica
- Albino Troll
- Dromar's Charm
- Skinrender
- Lotus Cobra
- What would you take in Pack 1, Pick 1? The guys choose Gifts Given.
- Moving onto the main topic, the guys define their basis for choosing the cards they will be talking about on the show. Basically, most of the cards in the episode can lead players to fall victim to "best-case scenario" and "worst-case scenario" thinking.
- What this means is allowing yourself to think about cards in their best- or worst-case scenarios rather than evaluating their actual playability in an average game of Magic.
- The first few cards that Usman feels lead people to this type of thinking are Blightsteel Colossus, Darksteel Colossus, and Inkwell Leviathan. Players tend to get excited about these cards and include them in a Cube on the theory of drafting decks with Tinker or some other way to cheat them into play, which is great in theory, but this probably rarely happens in any given Cube draft.
- Next up, Anthony suggests Meddling Mage and Pithing Needle as cards that should not be played in Cube. While these cards are all-stars in constructed formats because they each cancel out key cards that you often know are in your opponent's deck, in Cube, they each trade one for one at best for a card that you oftentimes are not even sure is in your opponent's deck. They aren't completely useless, but the guys feel that if you have room in your Cube for these cards, you should consider better cards.
- Other cards that bother the guys:
- Austere Command
- Arcane Denial
- Dissipate
- Words of War
- Stone Rain
- Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon
- Aftershock
- Orim's Chant
- Stormfront Pegasus
- Mistral Charger
- Brittle Effigy
- Sol Ring
- Black Lotus
- Listen in for the guys' thoughts on all of these cards. They make a lot of really good points.
Yo! MTG Taps! # 58 – A Storm of Swords
Running time 54 minutes
- Joey Pasco and Bigheadjoe kick off this week's Yo! MTG Taps! by covering the results of the two most recent Star City Games Open series events—Washington, D.C., and Edison, New Jersey.
- In reflecting on the results of the Standard portion of both events, the Joes feel that the Caw-Blade decks that came to the events were prepared for the mirror-match.
- Another version of Caw-Blade that was noteworthy included a Trinket Mage package and Elixir of Immortality for an infinite number of recurring Squadron Hawks.
- Moving on to the Legacy portion of the two SCG Opens, the guys talk about the High Tide deck piloted to the #1 slot by Alix Hatfield at SCG: Edison and the Cephalid Breakfast deck piloted by Mike Flores.
- Riding the recent wave of excitement that everyone seems to be feeling right now, Joey and Joe talk about their newfound interest in the format and talk about budget options for getting into the format .
