Conflux Review - Staff Top 5 Picks

Reddit

MTG's new 145 card expansion format is in full swing and like it or not that release schedule its here to stay.  At first I was underwhelmed by the cards coming out of this newest set but alas, I am more accustomed to the days of 300 card sets released two or three times a year.  Judged in the proper context of a 145 card booster set, Conflux is a decent expansion that has a little something for everyone.   Following the release of the complete Conflux visual spoiler the entire staff (2 guys) each hastily put together a "Top 5" list.  Staff members were not allowed to discuss their lists before publishing them so you can be sure that you're  getting two distinct takes on the "best" cards coming out of Conflux.

Keep in mind- these are off the cuff, first glance interpretations of the cards from experienced Magic players.  We're also judging these cards on their overall usefulness in all formats.  Obviously draft, constructed, standard and legacy will require different considerations.  We are by no means claiming to be able to call the next Tarmogoyf or Mutavault. That being said, here is my list.

Path to Exile - Best removal card in the game as far as I'm concerned.  Not to mention being able to use it on your own creatures if nothing else.  Fabulous uncommon that probably should be rare.  RIP unmake.. we hardly knew yee.

Font of Mythos - Lovers of "Howling Mine" will see the benefit of putting two down at the same time and only using one card slot.  Players might want to mix it up and add 2 howling mines and one FoM to grab that extra card slot.  Huge drawback with the 4 mana cost and the fact that your opponent gets to draw 3 cards before you get any benefit but could be wonderful in some decks.

Martial Coup - A fairly expensive Wrath but its that "You win once you get 7 Mana" aspect that appeals to me.  You can also use it earlier if necessary.  In a soldier deck where 1/1 tokens are now 3/3 first strike, vigilance creatures you could easily play it for less with 4 or 5 mana and this card would be worth it.   A must have in a soldier/white token deck either way.

It remains to be seen how this card will be played but I've lost to enough soldier token decks to know that this card is going to be a powerhouse.

Noble Hierarch - If Birds of Paradise isn't reprinted in 11th edition.. this card will go for a premium.  A great alternative and opportunity to play more than 4 "BoP" type cards in a deck.  Not only will standard "Bant" decks appreciate the card but any combination of these mana and even 5 color decks will love this card.

Scattershot Archer - This had to make the list.  1/2 for 1 green, awesome ability,  common.  Not to mention fairy death (heck, death to a TON of different creatures!)  Almost like green's version of Savannah Lions with a great ability to top it off.

Close Contenders:  Bloodhall Ooze , Soul's Majesty and Exotic Orchard for their obvious effects on "standard".
