This article comes out right before Pro Tour Dominaria begins, so I figured now is as good of a time as any to take a look at some mono-colored decks from Dominaria. Most of the pros won't be playing a mono-colored deck, so these decks likely won't get much notice even though they may still be good choices for you to play at your local FNM (Friday Night Magic) event or PPTQ (Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier).
Mono-Blue
Let's start out by looking at a Mono-Blue deck centered around flying creatures.
Mono-Blue Flyers -- Dominaria Standard | BEAUVICE, (5-0) MTGO
- Creatures (27)
- 2 Hope of Ghirapur
- 2 Nimble Obstructionist
- 2 Walking Ballista
- 2 Zahid, Djinn of the Lamp
- 3 Warkite Marauder
- 4 Aether Swooper
- 4 Siren Stormtamer
- 4 Storm Fleet Aerialist
- 4 Tempest Djinn
- Instants (3)
- 1 Spell Pierce
- 2 Lookout's Dispersal
- Enchantments (7)
- 3 Curious Obsession
- 4 Favorable Winds
- Artifacts (1)
- 1 Aethersphere Harvester
- Lands (22)
- 19 Island
- 1 Scavenger Grounds
- 2 Ipnu Rivulet
With the exception of Walking Ballista, every creature in this deck has flying, which means that nearly all of your creatures will receive a bonus for you having Favorable Winds in play. That bonus plus the evasion that flying grants is what will allow you to win games relatively quickly. In Game 1, this deck is all-in on this strategy, wanting to play flying threat after flying threat and attacking with them in combat. Post-sideboarding, you're able to sideboard in additional spells to help temporarily remove pesky blockers your opponent might have. And, of course, everyone's best friend Karn shows up in the sideboard as a source of card advantage.
Mono-Black
The Mono-Black deck I have for you this week is a midrange deck that also happens to run a few vehicles. Let's take a look at it.
Mono-Black Vehicles -- Dominaria Standard | Aurelio, (5-0) MTGO
- Creatures (26)
- 2 Gifted Aetherborn
- 4 Ammit Eternal
- 4 Bone Picker
- 4 Dread Wanderer
- 4 Night Market Lookout
- 4 Scrapheap Scrounger
- 4 Vicious Conquistador
- Instants (8)
- 2 Cast Down
- 2 Supernatural Stamina
- 4 Fatal Push
- Sorceries (1)
- 1 Walk the Plank
- Artifacts (5)
- 1 Aethersphere Harvester
- 4 Heart of Kiran
- Lands (20)
- 16 Swamp
- 4 Ifnir Deadlands
- Sideboard (15)
- 2 Gifted Aetherborn
- 4 Kitesail Freebooter
- 1 Walk the Plank
- 4 Duress
- 2 Harsh Scrutiny
- 2 Aethersphere Harvester
As I mentioned earlier, this deck isn't all-in on the vehicle plan that some other decks have used, but it does contain a playset of the best vehicle currently in Standard, Heart of Kiran. The deck also contains a nice selection of creatures that are quite capable of winning the game on their own in the event that you can't seem to locate any of the vehicles in this deck. Ammit Eternal is a creature I've had played against me that I find particularly annoying. I also like the copies of Night Market Lookout and Vicious Conquistador that can help soften up an opponent's life total, or possibly allow you to win the game from out of nowhere.
Mono-Red
The next deck I have for you is a midrange Mono-Red deck. Let's take a look at it.
Mono-Red Midrange - Dominaria Standard | ANDRW, (5-0) MTGO
- Creatures (23)
- 2 Pia Nalaar
- 3 Hazoret the Fervent
- 3 Kari Zev, Skyship Raider
- 3 Walking Ballista
- 4 Goblin Chainwhirler
- 4 Inventor's Apprentice
- 4 Scrapheap Scrounger
- Planeswalkers (2)
- 2 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
- Instants (8)
- 2 Abrade
- 2 Shock
- 4 Lightning Strike
- Artifacts (3)
- 3 Heart of Kiran
- Lands (24)
- 19 Mountain
- 1 Canyon Slough
- 4 Dragonskull Summit
- Sideboard (15)
- 2 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
- 1 Rekindling Phoenix
- 3 Glorybringer
- 4 Bomat Courier
- 2 Abrade
- 3 Fight with Fire
Don't let the fact that this deck includes five sources that provide Black mana fool you into thinking this is a deck, because it's not. The Black is only there for you to use to return a Scrapheap Scrounger to the battlefield, which allows you to keep the heat on your opponent. Speaking of heat, the sideboard contains three copies of one of the best cards Red has available currently in Standard, Fight with Fire. This spell is already good when you cast it for its usual CMC (converted mana cost), but in the late game when you can pay its kicker cost, this spell helps win games out of nowhere.
Mono-Green
The Mono-Green deck I have for you is a midrange beatdown deck that speaks to my inner-Timmy. Let's take a look at it.
Mono-Green Midrange -- Dominaria Standard | SPISHAK, (5-0) MTGO
- Creatures (26)
- 3 Jadelight Ranger
- 4 Greenbelt Rampager
- 4 Llanowar Elves
- 4 Longtusk Cub
- 4 Steel Leaf Champion
- 2 Verdurous Gearhulk
- 2 Rhonas the Indomitable
- 3 Ghalta, Primal Hunger
- Spells (12)
- 2 Ancient Animus
- 4 Blossoming Defense
- 1 Lifecrafter's Bestiary
- 2 Aethersphere Harvester
- 3 Rhonas's Monument
- Lands (22)
- 18 Forest
- 4 Hashep Oasis
- Sideboard (15)
- 2 Nissa, Vital Force
- 3 Prowling Serpopard
- 3 Thrashing Brontodon
- 2 Ancient Animus
- 2 Heroic Intervention
- 3 Naturalize
Many people said that Llanowar Elves is the most powerful card to come out of Dominaria, and that belief looks justified upon seeing this deck in action. It is what allows you to outpace your opponent by playing bigger threats a turn earlier. That's ultra-important when you're trying to get your Ghalta, Primal Hunger onto the battlefield as soon as possible. They also help power out your Steel Leaf Champions as early as turn two, which can be backbreaking for your opponent. This deck hits hard and fast, but also has the tools needed to remain competitive if the game should happen to go past turn five.
Mono-White
The final deck I have for you this week is all about the lifegain. Let's take a look at it.
Mono-White Lifegain - Dominaria Standard | chrispowell, (5-0) MTGO
- Creatures (17)
- 2 Martyr of Dusk
- 3 Angel of Sanctions
- 4 Anointer Priest
- 4 Crested Sunmare
- 4 Sacred Cat
- Enchantments (16)
- 1 Ixalan's Binding
- 2 Seal Away
- 2 Thopter Arrest
- 3 Legion's Landing
- 4 Anointed Procession
- 4 Cast Out
- Artifacts (4)
- 4 Oketra's Monument
- Lands (23)
- 10 Plains
- 1 Scavenger Grounds
- 2 Arch of Orazca
- 2 Dunes of the Dead
- 4 Memorial to Glory
- 4 Shefet Dunes
- Sideboard (15)
- 2 Gideon of the Trials
- 1 Lyra Dawnbringer
- 3 Settle the Wreckage
- 2 Fumigate
- 1 Seal Away
- 3 Ixalan's Binding
- 3 Authority of the Consuls
Many people know I have a fondness for Crested Sunmare. So when I saw this deck, I knew it was one I wanted to try out. This deck has all of the tools needed to be able to utilize Crested Sunmare's ability to make Horse tokens to the fullest. But the good thing is that this deck isn't a one-trick pony. Even without having a Crested Sunmare in play, this deck is very capable of winning. You have a ton of removal to use on your opponent's creatures, and many ways to create tokens which can be added upon with Oketra's Monument. There are also multiple ways to gain life in the deck, so you're able to outpace most any opponent. I like this deck a lot and think it gets a lot stronger after sideboarding thanks in no small part to Lyra Dawnbringer. I can't wait to sleeve this up for a FNM sometime.
Wrapping Up
Today I showed you five mono-colored decks that have been doing well on MTGO. This is actually just a drop in the bucket as there are quite a few other mono-colored archetypes that have gone 5-0 online that I didn't have room for. Maybe we'll revisit the mono-colored decks before leaving Dominaria? We'll see. Which mono-colored deck was your favorite? Let me know by leaving a comment below or you can reply to me directly on Twitter (@mikelikesmtg), or email me directly at mikelikesmtg@gmail.com. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
