It's that time again. The newest set has been completely spoiled and millions of Magic the Gathering players are rushing to their favorite spoiler page for the goods. Each time new product is released, Leaf and I both put out a "Top 5" list for that set highlighting some of the cards we really enjoy. Each person has their own tastes and biases- I try to balance my choices between cards that I personally enjoy and cards that I think will have a huge impact on the game in all formats. After you've scoffed at my choices from Rise of the Eldrazi, feel free to comment with your own list!
One word- BOOM! When this card was first revealed, the twitter community started it's own hashtag to try and contain the awesomeness of #All is Dust. Planar Cleansing, meet your replacement. There are several reasons to play this card. The most obvious is in a colorless or artifact deck. Just ramp normally, play a few colorless creatures and once you're at 7 wipe their side of the board clean. Of course, you're going to need help getting to seven mana but luckily, you can get there by generating any color mana! Whether it's Realms Uncharted or Oracle of Mul Daya or even an old school Mind Stone; getting to seven mana by turn five should seal a victory if you've got this in your hand. Just watch out for the counterspells! The other way you can play this card is to just use it as a sweep in any deck. Obviously, we're talking about casual formats when using a 7CMC sweep but nevertheless, an awesomely versatile (and just plain cool) card.
This is one of the better land-get cards to hit the scene in quite some time. Your opponent does get to try and mess with your choices but luckily, there are so many amazing non-basic lands being used today that you should have no problem making that point moot. Two non-basic lands of your choice (essentially) for three mana? Yes please. This should really help with the huge ramp you'll need to construct for your Eldrazi overlords but it's also a great way to fix up your mana on turn three.
I'm actually a big fan of the rebound mechanic. A lot of the spells with Rebound still aren't worth the price of admission but Consuming Vapors really shows how powerful "free spells" can be. Even if your opponent sacrifices a couple of 2/2 chumps you're going to be destroying 2X creatures and gaining four life for four mana. I also like the idea of killing their sole creature and leaving the rebounded spell hanging, just daring them to put out another. This is very much a control card and will help you maintain creature dominance as well as give you a little life cushion.
When we first heard about leveling, most of us were excited. We all thought about Figure of Destiny and longed for the Eventide days. Alas, the first levelers revealed were not Figure of Destinys by any means. When the mythic levelers were spoiled, players thought the abilities were great, but were still too expensive. Surely there were going to be cards that helped levelers! Training Grounds is that card. But what's great about this 1 drop enchantment is that it also helps out any other creature with an activated ability! Sphinx of Magosi becomes a serious threat when it's ability turns into "U: Draw a card, put a +1/+1 counter on ~". This card is Johnny's best friend and if we don't see it played in RoE, keep your eye on any creature with an activated ability from now until 2011.
On the other hand, who needs activated abilities! This card was actually spoiled by GatheringMagic.com through a top secret email correspondence. It is also one of the most powerful cards in the set. This is another one of those cards that you'll need to keep an eye on because, while it may not be useful in today's meta, it could be crucial in tomorrows. A 3/4 flier for four mana isn't too shabby either! The legendary creature factor might come into play if you're rolling four of these so watch out for that. I love her as an EDH general but I also think she is a serious card that demands your attention in standard as well.
