The moon rises in the east as you walk, a thin crescent held aloft by trees. Having not visited Issar Roon since the full moon, you decide it's time to pay the old man a visit. Besides, a story would help you relax before dinner.
The path to his study provides multiple views of the pale moon, and sets your mind to the old man's previous story. You can't help but wonder if he has a story to tell about your own moon. A few more steps, an almost silent creak of the familiar oak door, and you find yourself once again in Issar Roon's study.
Hello seeker-of-knowledge. I see that you are in a pensive mood today. Make yourself comfortable on the rug, and I will tell you a tale to calm your mind. It is a trivial tale, lost in the pages of time, insignificant to the canvas that we call the Multiverse. However, its simplicity holds courage, happiness, and adventure.
The old man closes the book he has been reading and sits at his desk. Though he doesn't turn to face you, he keeps his gaze distant from the books before him. You sit upon the colored rug, and wait for the old man's story to begin.
Jaeuhl Carthalion was born during a time when the prestigious Carthalion line was believed to be dying out. Jaeuhl's early life did nothing to dissuade such opinions, as he had trouble with the Knights of Kjeldor and was kicked out of their ranks at a young age. Of course, most Carthalions tend to walk a thin line between hero and troublemaker. So his childhood should be unsurprising to most historians. Jaeuhl would never become a hero known throughout the lands of Dominaria like his ancestor Carth or descendent Jared, but he eventually found his place in the world. That place was at the side of friends, and it began when he became an Advocate of the Juniper Order.
The Advocates of the Juniper Order were a small group of knights and druids who still held thin ties to Kjeldor while following and preaching the ways of the Juniper Order. Though the true details are lost most believe the Advocates of the Juniper Order were created to help lost citizens of Kjeldor find a better life within the forest of Fyndhorn. A few others have called it recruitment through benevolence. The Juniper Order itself was also a group of druids and knights, but they had forsaken Kjeldor completely for the forests of Fyndhorn. There, they lived alongside the elves, and worshipped the planeswalker Freyalise as a goddess of nature. They devoted their lives to protecting the forest and its inhabitants.
As a member of the Juniper Order Jaeuhl found a purpose, and devoted himself fully to their beliefs. He soon found friends among the Order, and lived happily for many years.
The old man pauses, as if the story were over. You give him a quizzical look, curious as to his intention.
What? You aren't satisfied with that simple story? Very well, I suppose I should have known I couldn't get away that easily.
The grumpiness in the old man’s voice sounds a bit forced, as though he were teasing you.
Jaeuhl was so fervent and diligent with his belief in the Order that Freyalise took notice, and eventually entrusted Jaeuhl with a quest. She gave him a number of artifacts and weapons, including her personal weapon, the Celestial Sword, and requested he destroy Tevesh Szat. Though he was unable to kill the powerful demon, Jaeuhl managed to banish Tevesh Szat from Dominaria with the Amulet of Quoz. This quest was the start of many adventures for the young man, and began a process of maturation that benefited him greatly.
After banishing Tevesh Szat, Jaeuhl returned to the woods of Fyndhorn. There, Freyalise introduced him to the Elder Druid’s daughter, Kaysa. The two fell in love and soon married. Jaeuhl and Kaysa lived happily for a time, but that is not where their story ends.
The old man pauses again, his aged face creased in an expression of contemplation.
Freyalise soon devised a way of ending the Ice Age that had lasted for two millennia, and with Kaysa’s help cast the World Spell. Dominaria was freed of the never-ending winter, but with the Thaw came new troubles. The plane’s rising waters forced the Juniper Order and elves of Fyndhorn to search for a new home. Jaeuhl took up the difficult task, and helped to lead the homeless to Yavimaya Forest.
Upon arriving in Yavimaya, the refugees found new threats, and Jaeuhl was forced into battle once again. A Phyrexian beast was felled by Jaeuhl’s Celestial Sword, and the Carthalion joined the battle against the Heart of Yavimaya. Allying themselves with a gorilla chieftain, the elves and humans were able to cleanse the Heart and finally find peace in their new home.
After the Fyndhorn citizens settled in Yavimaya, history loses the path of Jaeuhl Carthalion, but there is one last event concerning his heritage. Soon after the relocation Kaysa gave birth to their son, allowing the Carthalion line to continue protecting the denizens of Dominaria far into the future.
The old man ends his story with little change to his posture. When you ask if there is more he merely waves his hand toward the door. Used to his silent moments after a story, you follow his weathered hand’s motion and make for the dimly lit hall.
