You head in the direction of Issar Roon’s study one cool evening. Your stride has purpose, and your eyes are locked straight ahead. You refuse to be distracted by the passing sconces, carpets, or wooden doors. You open the oak door, step into the candle light, and immediately ask about your vivid dreams. The old man turns at your demanding words.
I see you have come with purpose today. Good. You are much more likely to learn from my tales if you have reason to be interested.
You repeat the question as politely as you are able, wanting an answer before the old man changes subjects as he so often does.
I cannot give you the answer you seek today, but I will admit that they are connected to my tales. You must come to accept Radiant and Jodah as truth before you are able to understand the dreams that appear before you.
Stunned that the old man knows the details of your dreams, you take a step back. Can this be real? Perhaps you told him in passing upon one of your previous visits. But no, your dream of Jodah was just two weeks ago, and you have seen the old man only once since then.
I believe it is time to teach you more about Dominaria’s history, as it holds the key to all major events in the Multiverse. Today, I will tell you of another member of the Nine Titans. I have talked of Urza at great length already and given you the history of Taysir, but I have only mentioned a few others in passing. Today will be the story of Lord Windgrace.
You are aware of the old man changing subjects, but are unable to open your mouth to stop him. The dreams repeat over and over in your head, searching for some detail that could tell you more.
Lord Windgrace was one of only two non-humans among the Nine Titans – Freyalise being the other. Though I suppose Tevesh Szat was no longer human by that time. Lord Windgrace was a panther, and one of the few known to have become a planeswalker. He was an old planeswalker, older than even Urza, and little is known about him before the Phyrexian Invasion. The only detail historians have to prove his age is the fact that he has described Urborg – his homeland – as a forest. It is common knowledge that Urborg was sunk and turned into a swamp from the Sylex blast that ended the Brothers’ War.
The old man accompanies his last line with a glare sent directly at you. It interrupts your thoughts, and brings you back to the present, at least partially.
Lord Windgrace also holds the distinction of being one of only two Titans to survive the Phyrexian Invasion – Freyalise being the other yet again. Some died during their invasion of Phyrexia, while others died during the Phyrexian invasion of Dominaria. What happened to the ninth, Urza, has filled many books’ pages, and is for a time when you are of a sounder mind.
After the Phyrexian Invasion, Lord Windgrace returned to his homeland. Because of Urza and many other events during the Phyrexian Invasion, he was determined to rid Urborg of all artifice. To that end, Lord Windgrace learned to control the slivers in Urborg, along with numerous other kinds of creatures and beings. An organized group, called Gladehunters, appeared at the same time, and took the role of elite artifice hunters for Lord Windgrace.
Three hundred years later, Lord Windgrace was thrust back into the events of Dominaria and the Multiverse. The rifts across Dominaria were spiraling out of control, and the plane was dying. This alone would have eventually drawn out the powerful panther planeswalker, but it was unneeded. The Rathi Overlay had created a rift directly above Urborg, and Lord Windgrace struggled to find a way to save his homeland.
After numerous attempts and fruitless spells, Lord Windgrace saw Freyalise’s successful closing of the Skyshroud rift. The guardian of Urborg cast a powerful spell that bound his spirit to the land, allowing him to watch over Urborg forever. Then he sacrificed himself to seal the rift. It is yet to be seen whether he still remains among the spirits of Urborg.
The old man sends another stiff stare in your direction, as if to make sure you are paying attention.
One last fact about the panther planeswalker seems to remain shrouded in mystery. There was a Crovax Windgrace among the Weatherlight crew, but no one has been able to determine if the two are related. Some say the man was descended from the great planeswalker himself. Others say his family merely took the name to solidify their power within a continuously contested domain. I know not which it is.
Now leave me be young one. I have answered your question as much as the present allows, and provided you with a tale. Return when you are more eager to listen to what I have to tell you.
With a wave of his hand, the old man turns back to his books. You don’t feel like he has answered your question, but you can see that he believes otherwise. Hopefully, you can pull other answers from the old man upon a later visit.
With too many questions and thoughts swirling in your mind, you pull the heavy door closed behind you.
