You had never scrutinized the lights in this hall previously, but a particular device catches your attention on the way to Issar Roon's study. A half-sphere of copper – ornament with cut shapes of dragons, turtles, and sprites – surround an opaque glass. Under the glass lie 3 candles the length of your hand, from palm to fingertip, all lit with large flames. The design pulls your attention between the simple candles and intricate shapes within the copper, never letting your gaze settle on one.
You pull yourself away from the small chandelier with some difficulty, and continue your journey. You note, not without curiosity, that no other lamp within the hall is made of the same design. A sudden change to sconces marks your nearing arrival. You prepare yourself for a story by clearing thoughts of illumination from your mind. Then open the oak door.
Welcome back! I imagine you have returned for the rest of last week's tale, eh? I suppose I can oblige a student's burning interest for a short while. Let's see…
The old man goes quiet for a few moments, most likely remembering where he left off and what he wishes to continue with. Before the quiet can stretch to an awkward silence the old man begins.
Teferi's departure from existence piqued the interest of three mages; Jolrael, Mangara, and Kaervek. Their arrival on the empty isle and subsequent meeting eventually led to the Mirage War, and much strife for the kingdoms Teferi left behind. When Teferi returned he had no knowledge of time passing, and was unaware of the great war he had started. His ignorance did not last long however, for a dragon attacked the island soon after its reappearance.
Despite his desire to prevent his homeland from falling into deeper chaos, Teferi was unable to stop the raging conflict started by Kaervek. The timelines associated with Teferi`s Isle remained unstable and required constant monitoring and mending. Being the only one with knowledge of the problem and its possible solutions Teferi was forced to remain on his island.
A planeswalker isn`t without alternatives however, and Teferi was an incredibly skilled walker. He sent those who defended his homeland visions in their dreams and empowered their spells when necessary. He felt guilt over his role in causing the war, and did everything he could to ensure victory. When his homeland returned to peaceful times Teferi remained on his isle, but refrained from continuing any experiments involving time.
When the Phyrexians finally arrived as Urza had foretold Teferi`s reluctance resurfaced. He wished to hold no part in the defense of Dominaria, and refused Urza`s invitation to join the Nine Titans. By the time a portal opened above Zhalfir an alternative had emerged within Teferi`s mind, and he carried it out to perfection.
The time mage convinced his former tutor Urza to join him in teleporting between Phyrexian portals, overloading the portals` energy source. This had a duel effect, shutting the portals down before too many troops could pour through, and creating a huge amount of energy for any who could harness it. Teferi used that energy to power a titanic phasing spell, removing Northwestern Jamuraa and a large part of Shiv from existence. Teferi then disappeared along with his homeland.
The old man allows for a pause, as though he were re-imagining the events he currently described.
Information on Teferi after the Phyrexian Invasion is fairly fuzzy. No other planeswalker recorded seeing or talking to the time mage for many years, and some went so far as to suggest he had phased himself out with Jamuraa. Yet, he returned to Dominaria three hundred years later with Jhoira at his side.
Teferi was met with a very unpleasant surprise upon his arrival. Time rifts had been left unchecked for centuries, draining Dominaria of mana and threatening to destroy the entire Multiverse. Knowing the consequences of an unhealed time stream on Dominaria, Teferi set about helping to lead an effort to close the rifts.
Two of the major rifts were directly linked to Teferi, having been created when he phased out Shiv and Zhalfir three centuries ago, and the time mage intended to fix what his actions had caused. The first, over Shiv, was closed by Teferi himself. Though he lost his planeswalker spark in the process, he was able to safely return the phased portion of Shiv while healing the rift. The second, over Northwestern Jamuraa, was not so successful. Before Teferi had time to find a way of phasing Zhalfir back in, Jeska healed the rift while under the influence of Leshrac. The danger was gone, but Teferi stated that the area was lost permanently.
While the loss of Zhalfir was a tragedy, Teferi – with the help of other prominent planeswalkers, including a certain elder dragon – was able to close the remaining time rifts across Dominaria. With balance restored to the Multiverse and his spark gone, Teferi disappeared among the fog of a new era. I imagine he still lives today. But his location and activities are unknown to me.
The old man stands up as he finishes his story, and walks slowly to a bookshelf on your right. He seems to have finished so you stand up yourself and prepare to leave.
One final word before you go young one. Learn Teferi`s lesson well: those who meddle with time will only find their efforts turned against them. Now be out with you.
You wonder why the old man thinks such a thing is a necessary lesson for someone as yourself, but you obey his request and leave. Just what has caused this old man to believe in the fantasy worlds of his books?
