The Unabridged Cube is a collection of one of every card ever printed. Over the years, it’s given you access to some interesting Sealed pools, oddball draft decks, and mind-bending game states. It even occasionally showcases some cards yet to be printed or released . . . but you try not to think about that too much.
Today, however, the Cube has made that last bit difficult for you: It’s pushed out several Kaladesh cards for your tournament today, likely in anticipation for next week’s prerelease. Nobody’s complaining, though — the Cube has been bottoming out for the last few months, and it’s always nice to take several of the cards for a test drive.
Your opponent this round is Senna, and he's been remarkably scrappy. You won your first game on the back of several big creatures, but he busted out a Baneslayer Angel on your second game to completely t-bone your chances at winning. After taking a couple of hits, you drew a Claustrophobia to lock down the troublesome angel, but the damage was done: Senna’s life total is way out in front now.
On his last turn, Senna drops a Sluggishness on your face-down creature and taps an Intimidator Initiate to crew his Smuggler’s Copter. Then he attacks you with 5 power worth of flyers (six, considering his Infantry Veteran) to bring you one turn away from death. Even worse, his Copter draw gives him a Pentavus, which he plays on his second main phase.
Then again, that face-down creature of yours happens to be a possible way out: It’s the Vesuvan Shapeshifter you drew from your previous turn’s Ribbons of Night. Senna’s Sluggishness won’t stop you from having it copy his Baneslayer Angel[/card . . . although his 2/7 Aerial Responder might give you some pause.
Your draw for the turn is a [card]Hubris — not exactly something that’ll get you back into pole position. While it might certainly get you a free shot at Senna’s life total, it won’t get rid of any of his auras, or give you any long-term traction.
Then again, after a few minutes’ thought, you think you can see a promising line of play. Rather than slowly claw your way back into the game, why not just go for the risky maneuver and win the whole thing? After all, you might just beat Senna to the winners’ circle.
It is the start of your first main phase. Defeat Senna before the start of his next combat phase.
You are at 5 life, with the following cards in play:
- Stern Proctor (with your Oblivion Crown and your Paradise Mantle attached)
- Extruder
- Ovalchase Daredevil
- Galvanic Juggernaut (tapped, with Senna’s Serra's Boon attached)
- a face-down 2/2 creature (Vesuvan Shapeshifter, with Senna’s Sluggishness attached)
- Spawning Pit
- 4 islands
- 4 swamps
You have the following card in your hand:
You do not know the identities of the any of the next cards of your library.
Senna is at 16 life and has no cards in his hand. He has the following cards in play:
- Intimidator Initiate (tapped)
- Infantry Veteran (tapped)
- Aerial Responder (with Senna’s Eland Umbra attached)
- Baneslayer Angel (tapped, with your Claustrophobia attached)
- Pentavus (with five +1/+1 counters on it)
- Smuggler’s Copter (tapped)
- 4 mountains (all tapped)
- 6 plains (five tapped)

Last Week’s Puzzle:
Correct solutions to last week’s puzzle were received from Dominic Chan, Russell Jones, Norman Dean, Matthew Harvey, Dom Guido, Hyman Rosen, Alfred Hsie, Subrata Sircar, Maarten Wybaillie, Ryou Niji, Cody Pulvermacher, Aaron Golas, Kriz Lee, Bill Murphy, and Michael Feldman.
Michael Feldman writes: “Solving the puzzle requires realizing that the abilities granted to an equipped creature by Thornbite Staff are separate and do not depend on each other. That means an equipped creature can take advantage of being untapped for creature deaths for its own tapping ability, not just Thornbite Staff's. Another necessary understanding about separate abilities is that Bomb Squad's destruction of a creature with four fuses does not depend on waiting for your upkeep to proliferate the fuses.”
“The first thing we need to realize,” Maarten Wybaillie notes,“is that Bloodfire Dwarf is threatening a lot of deaths. A lot of creatures dying is good with Thornbite Staff. The most efficient way to convert those untap triggers into damage is Bomb Squad. As Bomb Squad is one of the creatures that would die from the Bloodfire Dwarf, we need to find a way to save it.”
Multiple solutions are possible with Bloodfire Dwarf’s ability in mind. In fact, you have enough mana — and enough triggers — to use the Thornbite Staff for direct damage, as Dominic Chan writes:
- Tap all of our Mountains and Dwarven Hold, removing all of its storage counters to add to our mana pool.
- Pay and tap Bloodfire Dwarf to deal Minette 1 damage through Thornbite Staff. She goes to 5 life.
- Pay and equip Bomb Squad with Thornbite Staff.
- Play Looming Spires and give Bomb Squad +1/+1 and first strike.
- Tap Bomb Squad to place a fuse counter on Gruul Ragebeast.
- Pay and sacrifice Bloodfire Dwarf for its ability. When Bloodfire Dwarf dies, Bomb Squad untaps. Tap it again to put a second fuse counter on Ragebeast.
- Bloodfire Dwarf deals 1 damage to each creature without flying. Dwarven Berserker and Goblin Masons die. Thornbite Staff triggers twice. Bomb Squad untaps. Tap it to put a third fuse counter on Ragebeast. Bomb Squad untaps again, then tap it to put a fourth fuse counter on Ragebeast.
- Bomb Squad's ability triggers — all counters are removed from Ragebeast and it is destroyed, dealing 4 damage to Minette. She goes to 1 life. Thornbite Staff triggers from Ragebeast dying and untaps Bomb Squad.
- Pay and tap Bomb Squad to deal 1 damage to Minette through Thornbite Staff.
One variant of the above solution is to use your first activation of Thornbite Staff (while it’s on Bloodfire Dwarf) to deal 1 damage to Dwarven Miner. This allows Bloodfire Dwarf’s ability to kill the Miner and give Bomb Squad an additional untap trigger — which you can then use to ping Minette.
“There are a bunch of other possible solutions here,” Norman Dean points out,“ and this would be more difficult if we didn't have the option of pinging Minette with the Staff directly.”
Russell Jones’ solution, in fact, takes this approach — which has the possibility that you’ll never target Minette with the Staff at all:
- Tap Cavern of Souls and three Mountains to move Thornbite Staff ontoBomb Squad.
- Tap Mutavault to animate itself.
- Tap Bomb Squad to put a counter on Gruul Ragebeast. (Countdown: 3)
- Play Looming Spires. Use its trigger to give Bomb Squad +1/+1 and first strike, making it 2/2. Skyshroud War Beast becomes 5/5, not that we care.
- Tap the last Mountain and sacrifice Bloodfire Dwarf. Thornbite Stafftriggers, untapping Bomb Squad.
- Before Bloodfire Dwarf's ability resolves, tap Bomb Squad to put a counter on Gruul Ragebeast. (Countdown: 2)
- Bloodfire Dwarf deals 1 damage to each creature, which is enough to destroy Goblin Masons and Dwarven Berserker. Thornbite Staff triggers twice. Goblin Masons triggers on top of them, destroying target Wall, where the only legal target is the animated Mutavault. Mutavault is destroyed, creating a third Thornbite Staff trigger.
- After Bomb Squad untaps from the top trigger, immediately tap it to put a counter on Gruul Ragebeast. (Countdown: 1)
- After Bomb Squad untaps from the second trigger, tap it again to put another counter on Gruul Ragebeast. (Countdown: BOOM!) Gruul Ragebeastis destroyed, Minette takes 4 damage (to 2), and Thornbite Stafftriggers again.
- Untap Bomb Squad, tap it to put a counter on Yotian Soldier just to strike fear into the artificial soldier's heart, and untap it again with the last trigger.
- Drain mana from Dwarven Hold to move Thornbite Staff onto Dwarven Miner.
- Go to combat and attack with a 1/2 Dwarven Miner and 2/2 Bomb Squad.
- Yotian Soldier can only block one of them, and if it's not the Bomb Squad, then 2 combat damage is immediately lethal.
- If Yotian Soldier blocks the Bomb Squad, Dwarven Miner still gets through for 1 damage (to1), and Yotian Soldier's 1 power is enough to combine with theBloodfire Dwarf's damage to kill off Bomb Squad. This ends the threat of turning its body into shrapnel, but it also causes Thornbite Staffto trigger.
- Untap Dwarven Miner, then sacrifice Dwarven Ruins to get 2 mana and use it to pay for Thornbite Staff's ping ability. Minette takes 1 more(to 0) and loses. (Boom?)
Michael Feldman points out that there’s also a more complex solution in the mix, which includes all nonland cards except for Cudgel Troll, and grants Dwarven Berserker the kill:
- Tap and sacrifice Dwarven Ruins, tap and remove all storage counters from Dwarven Hold, tap Cavern of Souls for its first ability, and tap all other lands for a total of 13 mana (only {R}{R} of which needs to be reserved for color). Skyshroud War Beast becomes a 3/3 creature, as you only have three nonbasic lands now.
- Pay {2} and tap Bloodfire Dwarf to activate its Thornbite Staff ability, dealing 1 point of damage to Skyshroud War Beast. (11 mana left.)
- Pay {1} to activate Mutavault's second ability, making it a 2/2 creature of every type until end of turn. (10 mana left.)
- Pay {4} to equip Bomb Squad with Thornbite Staff. (6 mana left.)
- Pay {2} and tap Bomb Squad to activate its Thornbite Staff ability, dealing 1 damage to Goblin Mason. Its death triggers two abilities – its own ability and Bomb Squad's Thornbite Staff trigger.
- Because you're the active player, your creature's ability goes on the stack first.
- Goblin Mason's ability goes on the stack second, and because Mutavault, as every creature type, is the only wall in play, Minette is forced to target it for destruction. (4 mana left.)
- Goblin Mason's ability resolves, destroying Mutavault. Your loss of another nonbasic land makes Skyshroud War Beast a 2/2 creature (with 1 damage marked on it).
- Mutavault's destruction triggers Bomb Squad's Thornbite Staff ability again, which goes on the stack on top of the same ability.
- Allow one of the Thornbite Staff triggers to resolve, untapping Bomb Squad.
- Before the other trigger resolves, tap Bomb Squad to put a fuse counter on Gruul Ragebeast.
- Allow the other Thornbite Staff trigger to resolve, untapping Bomb Squad.
- Tap Bomb Squad to put a second fuse counter on Gruul Ragebeast.
- Pay {2}{R} and tap Dwarven Miner to destroy Dwarven Hold or Cavern of Souls. Either way, you only have one basic land left.Skyshroud War Beast becomes a 1/1 creature with 1 damage marked, destroying it. Bomb Squad's Thornbite Staff ability triggers, untapping it. (You have 1 mana left, which should be {R}.)
- Tap Bomb Squad to put a third fuse counter on Gruul Ragebeast.
- Play Looming Spires, which enters the battlefield tapped, giving +1/+1 and first strike to Dwarven Berserker.
- Pay your last {R} and sacrifice Bloodfire Dwarf to put its ability on the stack. Bomb Squad's Thornbite Staff ability triggers, and goes on the stack on top of the Bloodfire Dwarf ability.
- Allow the Thornbite Staff ability to resolve, untapping Bomb Squad.
- Tap Bomb Squad to put a fourth fuse counter on Gruul Ragebeast. Bomb Squad's last ability triggers, removing all fuse counters from Gruul Ragebeast, destroying it and dealing 4 damage points to Minette. Minette is now at 2 life.
- Bomb Squad's Thornbite Staff ability triggers again, but it doesn't matter anymore. Allow it to resolve and, if you like, you can tap Bomb Squad to put a fuse counter on anything you want.
- Bloodfire Dwarf's ability resolves, dealing 1 damage to all creatures, none of which can fly. Bomb Squad, as a 1/1 creature, dies… but it's certainly done its job.
- Attack with Dwarven Berserker, which is a 2/2 first striker due to Looming Spires.Minette's only potential blocker is Yotian Soldier.
- If she blocks, Dwarven Berserker's ability triggers, making it a 5/2 first strike trampler. Yotian Soldier, as a 1/4 with 1 damage marked on it, would die with 3 damage marked, and Dwarven Berserker would trample through to deal 2 damage to Minette.
- If she doesn't block, Dwarven Berserker deals 2 damage directly. Either way, Minette is down to 0 life and defeated at the hands of her own mini-minions.
“The interaction of activating Mutavault,” Norman Dean adds,“then having it be destroyed by Goblin Masons' death trigger (as a Wall) for an additional death trigger/untap is particularly amusing.”
