Hello awesome folks and happy day to you and yours! Today I want to start digging into White card flow for formats like Commander, multiplayer, Five Color and Peasant/Pauper. Basically, all various kitchen table formats with an emphasis on Commander.
Unlike the other colors in this series, this one is very disconnected like Black either losing life or sacrificing dorks, or Green about dorks or reds discard to draw or exile from your library for a turn, White has tons of card draw in different boxes and ways and is very wide, but not that deep.
Ready for my article? Remember, to make this it must have a White color identity, not multi like Dismantling Blow and then cannot be a cantrip like Shelter or Wall of Omens that replaces itself when doing something else but an actual proper card draw spell. Ready?
Honorable Mention #1. (#14 Overall) - Spells that Draw Multiple People Cards
Our first section are the sorcery/instant selection that draw for you and foes too. There are three. Cut a Deal costs three at sorcery speed and everyone else draws one and you draw that many. This is my favorite since you draw more in a multiplayer setting. Secret Rendezvous has you and a foe draw three, so it's a cheap Concentrate for helping another too. Then the instant will draw you and a foe two, it's a common for Pauper, Peasant and Pauper Commander and then you can normally cast this for three and save your team by giving them indestructible for the turn to stop targeted or mass removal or to save blockers. Because of that ability, I know many that will only run it of this group.
Honorable Mention #2. (#13. Overall) - Teyo, Geometric Tactician AND Loran of the Third Path
This permanent legendary pair cost three, and have card draw for you and a foe but are primarily run for other things. Teyo makes a 0/4 White Wall with flying and defender on arrival to the battlefield to block attacks on Teyo, planeswalker friends, and then you too. He was my favoriate planeswalker from his deck for all stuff. Then you can +1 to draw and your foe too, and then you can -2 to make people just attack in one direction for a turn. Loran ETbs with a 2/1 vigilance body and then ETB destroys an artifact or enchantment so she's a Reclamation Sage in White. Then you can tap her to draw and have a foe do so as well! Nasty pair of fun times to break things down with.
Honorable Mention #3. (#12 Overall) - Losheel, Clockwork Scholar
This uncommon legendary dork can be a Commander for that deck and then is an uncommon for Pauper Commander. This three-drop Elephant has two abilities. First, if combat damage would be dealt to attacking artifact dorks you control? Prevent it! Second, did an artifact dork ETB? Draw a card! But just once per turn, but note that that could happen on opposing turns, so artifact dorks with flash or flash enablers that are colorless are great for this deck or in the 99 of other decks. Card draw every turn, but just once per turn is reliable here since it only needs artifact dorks to ETB. Note that there is no "nontoken" word here, so instant speed artifact tokens will trigger too as well as lands that make them like Mirrex. Love this uncommon loads!
Honorable Mention #4. (#11. Overall) - Bennie Bracks, Zoologist
Our final card in Honorable Mention and another legendary to build around is this classic four-drop 3/2 dork. This is also once/turn limit on to draw a card in each end step, not just yours, if you made a token this turn. Anything from dorks to Clues to Treasures will count, but just once. This also has convoke to drop him early and pay for Command Tax from the tokens you are making. Since both him and Losheel like it when artifact token dorks arrive, you can put them in the same deck. Also, like Losheel, you can make tokens instantly to draw each opposing turn too, only that's easier since so many token makers like Raise the Alarm are instants already, and lands will make tokens like Castle Ardenvale.
#10. Dawn of Hope and Shout Out to The Gaffer
Let's turn to life gain card draw! The enchantment costs two and has a life gain trigger. When you gain life you can swap two mana to draw a card. That's the brake here, the mana spent, not once per turn or anything like that. Then you can spend four mana to make a 1/1 Solider with lifelink to trigger life gain or Bennie. Life gain is beloved archetype for kitchen table play, and then a shout out to another legendary dork that can be your Commander, this time a 2/3 with a cost of three. Then in each end step you'll draw if you gained at least three life this turn!!! Sure, it also has the break of once per turn end step, but you can gain life every opposing turn with things like permanents, Congregates, or blocking with lifelink dorks. Both are great in the same deck!
#9. Court of Ardenvale AND Court of Grace
Hello and welcome to our pair of four-cost enchantments make you the Monarch on arrival to the battlefield and then in your upkeep you'll get a trigger that's better if you have the Monarchy and kept it for a round of turns. The former one puts a three or fewer cost permanent into your hand but if you are the Monarch into play. The latter one makes a 1/1 flying Spirit to block or swing, but if you are the Monarch that'll be a 4/4 Angel instead. I like Monarchy in White for a few reasons. You need to draw cards by keeping or stealing the Monarchy on your turn.
Let's look at each reason in turn:
- Vigilance - Since you want to swing to gain the Monarch and block to keep, enter vigilance letting you do both and ideally on an evasive dork like Serra Angel.
- Taxing Attacks - White is the color now of taxing attacks like Ghostly Prison, so people often cannot attack you in mass to slip past your blockers and steal the Monarchy.
- Pillow Forts - White is iconic as the color to stop attackers from Kor Haven to tapping prior to attacks with Benalish Trapper.
- Token Making - White loves making token bodies to block to save the Monarch.
- Cheap Instant Speed Removal - White has amazing instant speed removal of dorks that slip through like Path to Exile or Swords to Plowshares.
And that's why this color with Monarchy and great Monarch matters triggers are great fits!
#8. Minas Tirith
Our only land on any countdown of top card flow is this legendary land! It usually ETBs tapped, taps for Whitw and you can tap it with two mana to draw a card but only if you attacked with two or more dorks this turn, which is pretty likely in a creature based aggro color like White. From attacking artifact dorks like Losheen to attacking tokens with Bennie to attacking with lifelink with Dawn of Hope and The Gaffer, this is a very strong card since it's synergetic with so much stuff. Mono-White, Selesnya or Boros aggro? Azorius Flyers? Orzhov, Mono-White, Boros or Selesnya Tokens? Hate Bears? And this is just a land that taps for your color, so there is no opportunity cost to run it!
#7. Mesa Enchantress
This colorshifted Vesuvan Enchantress from the set Planar Chaos saw it get printed in later Core sets. This 0/2 isn't big on stats, sure, but she's big on that cast trigger to draw whenever you cast that enchantment!!! It'll work for Auras, normal enchantments too, Classes, and even if countered will still draw you that card. This locked in Selesnya as the color of Auras and Enchantments matter both popular archetypes since this was mono-Green before. Nasty fun times, commence!
#6. Mangara, the Diplomat
Our final card before the Top Five proper is another legendary dork you can play in your Command Zone. This time costing four mana for a 2/4 lifelink body. He has two great abilities too! Whenever a foe attacks you or your planeswalker buddies with two or more dorks, you'll draw a card. They can, unlike Ghostly Prison effects, but they might not want to give you a card and split attacks at others. Then when a foe casts their second spell each turn, you draw a card. Since many run cheap cantrips and card draw, they'll be casting too and triggering Mangara. I built around him back when he debuted in 2020 here where I built a Pillow Fort and Group Hug deck around Howling Mine effects and with our good Mangara! This is my 2nd highest hitting legendary dork to build around in Commander!
#5. Rumor Gatherer
Everyone's favorite three-drop uncommon (Peasant uncommon slots) recently printed 2/1 with the alliance trigger when someone ETBs, you scry one, great deck setting up over time, but not good at the card draw. Enter the second time this happened each turn - then you'll draw that sweet card! Note that there are no brakes here like "nontoken" this works for anything else that ETBs. This can be done a few times each round of turns in multiplayer with more instant making tokens like the aforementioned Raise the Alarm and similar effects. This is also brilliant in brews like tokens, aggro, landfall dork makers like Scute Swarm, and more. Welcome to the Top Five!
#4. Archivist of Oghma
Alright, everything from up through the #5 spot was relatively even, but here there is a big jump up in card quality. This Hate Bear with flash 2/2 body is a beloved Commander Classic. Whenever a foe searches their library, you draw and gain a life too. Since we know how often searches happen from ramp, fetch lands, to tutors, it happens loads. Just time this to flash when a search is on the stack and draw right now to replace itself and then everything else from there on out is card quality. And don't forget to gain that life too. This is amazing in any White deck, and is in a massive 7% of White decks. I think it's even better in Hate Bear builds or with the Life Gain archetype alongside Dawn of Hope.
#3. Mentor of the Meek, Welcoming Vampire AND Tocasia's Welcome
Three at the three-spot! The first printed was Mentor as a three-mana 2/2 with one ability when a small dork with a two or fewer power arrives, you can swap a mana for a card. This has no other brakes save for the mana investment, it even works for tokens. Then the Vampire was printed next, same cost, this time it adds flying and +1 toughness, but it just works once per turn so it's both better then Mentor (flying, bigger size, no mana needed) and worse (just once per turn). Then the enchantment also costs three, and this time the ETB is for dorks with a cheap three mana cost instead of smaller powers, which are typically the same stuff, and then you draw without mana, but again, just once per turn like the Vampire. Love this trio loads and they are great in aggro, Hate Bear, tokens, creature type matters with lower power stuff and more!
#2. Sram, Senior Edificer AND Pursteel Paladin
Two cards at spot number two Let's turn to another pair of two-drop 2/2 just like the Archivist and then our final legendary dork and then penultimate spot on today's countdown. The legendary Sram has one ability, but it's so good! He has a cast trigger for Auras, Equipment and Vehicles to draw a card. Sure, it's more limited than Enchantments like Mesa Enchantress above, but with three options, you have three deck types he can lead - Equipment, Auras and Enchantments are all in the top 15 archetypes. And you can combine them Voltron or run him in Vehicles decks too. He's also great in the 99 of those since they are usually White anyway like Boros for Vees or Equipment or Selesnya for Auras. Also, when you build around him, there are free or one cost equipment you can add just to draw tons on your main phase. Sram leads a strong 1800 decks as a Commander and is in 6% of White decks outside of that.
Then there is the Paladin. This two-drop will draw when an Equipment ETBs not a cast trigger, sure, but in the same space as that deck archetype. What makes him very strong is his metalcraft to equip for free all day long if you control at least three artifacts, which is so easy since it counts lands and tokens, and with the card draw combined with that free equipping, he is an Equipment essential. He's in about 50% of the decks that Sram is in. But they are both amazing at the card flow. And there was a long time that Sram was the best card draw in White since it's mana and tapping free, repeatable and flexible, but no more...
#1. Esper Sentinel
Mr. Obvious called, and he wants a conversation with you all! One at the one spot! When I started this article, I copied this over from Gatherer first, it was in my #1 spot, and it's not leaving. This was the new replacement for Sram and friends. As you can see, this one-drop has a 1/1 body and then one ability. When your foes go to cast their first noncreature spell of the turn, they are taxed by mana equal to this's power, default one like Rhystic Study, or you'll draw a card also like Rhystic Study.
There are two breaks here. The first is that it doesn't work for creatures ever. The second is that this only works on the first one cast, so they can cast Brainstorm to dig for something and then cast what they drew. But even with those two brakes, that's nasty on a one drop even without pumping its power, since they cannot counter it with Swan Song or An Offer You Can't Refuse since it's a dork and artifact. And that's before Counterspell mana comes online. Then if you start pumping its power with things like Glorious Anthem, Bonesplitter, Rancor or +1/+1 counters you'll really smash things around. It's pricey on the secondary market, but it's played in a massive 22% of White decks. Also, note it's power in any deck, but in tempo, aggro with Anthem effects, artifact and dorks matter like Losheen, Hate Bears, Auras, Equipment, Voltron, +1/+1 counters matter and more this is a must kill on sight guy.
And there we go! I hope you enjoyed this latest Top Ten Card Draw from a set! Also, note that there are tons of great card-draw in White that's not here like Sage's Reverie, Stone Haven Outfitter, Lady of Laughter and the legendary Faramir, Field Commander that have various triggers either ETB or over time when something happens.
