Top Ten Art Pieces from Commander 2021

Reddit

Hello art fans! Last week we counted down my choices for Top Ten Art from Strixhaven, which you can check out here. Today I want to look at the best art from Commander 2021! To make this list, it must be art that is new to the set. That means it either is a new card or new art for an older card that's reprinted.

As a reminder, I am not a trained critic nor artist, and thus I merely present my take on my favorite art from the set only.

Ready to check out my Top Ten? Let's do it to it!

Honorable Mention: Veyran, Voice of Duality

Not only did this hit (pretty high) my Top Ten from Commander 2021 (which you can find here). it's also making an appearance in the honorable mention section at essentially #11 here in my list today! I love the card, and I love the colors. Check it out. See the swirls of red and blue in the magic on the sides of the art? I love that! See the figure Veyran in the center well done with those colors attacking her? I love that too!

And who made this lovely piece? Mathias Kollros did! Good job sir! He has 114 other pieces which you can check out here. You might recognize his Cancel; Dark Depths; Decree of Pain; Greater Good; Guttersnipe; Krark, the Thumbless; Sinister Sabotage; and Tatyova, Benthic Druid. My favorite is the new Dark Depths. This is not the first time Mathias has hit my list!

10. Ezzaroot Channeler

This Treefolk Druid is the gift that keeps on going! This is the only card in the game that begins with "Ezz." Odd that I care, I know. Insert smiley face here. 4/6 with reach? Tap to gain life? Reduce the cost of your fellow dorks? Why isn't this legendary? No idea. But I do love this Ezz...'s art as well! I prefer the lanterns in the variant art to the base one. I really love the glowing green in the feet and heart of said Treefolk. I love the spines and figures of said Druid. Love it lots! Thanks Kieran Yanner! Kieran is also in the 150+ club with 162 pieces of art to his name in the MTG canon. You can check it out here. From Aegis Automaton to Wretched Confluence, he has a lot of letters under his banner. Great stuff Kieran!

9. Alibou, Ancient Witness

Are you a fan of Matt Stewart's massive 179 pieces? (Check them all out here). From Absorb Identity to Zulaport Enforcer, we have a lot of pieces by the artist. Which one is your favorite? I really like the Ancient Witness! Check it out! The look of the artifact is upon this legendary Golem. I love the artifact centric take on a certain skull holding scene in Shakespeare. I really dig the background, figures, and skin of the Golem. Alibou is a great witness to awesome art! Welcome back Matt Stewart!

8. Rionya, Fire Dancer

Rionya, Fire Dancer

Hello fans of Red and Humans and Wizards and tokens and spells and Dancers of Fire. I've got your card right here! This is our second-to-last mono-Red card in today's countdown. I really like Rionya! I like the colors that were used in her body, especially her hair. I like the blades in their hand and the dripping fire from them. I like the hint of fire in one of her eyes. I like it all! What do you think? Who crafted this work? Heonhwa Choe! They aren't even at 20 cards yet with just 18 cards under their credit. Those cards include Double Vision; Flux Channeler; Orah, Skyclave Hierophant; Skewer the Critics and Volrath, the Shapestealer. This is Heonhwa's first appearance on my countdown! Welcome artist!

7. Ruxa, Patient Professor

Look at this wonderfully delightful card! I love the idea of a Bear Professor! It's so fun! I love the delight of the glasses on the eyes and the Bear's Claw on the blackboard. It's just fun! I love the clothing on this cute delight! Wonderful! Delightful! Who crafted this piece of art? Ilse Gort did! With 21 total pieces Ilse's impact in the MTG player may be minor but it includes cards like Flourishing Fox; In Search of Greatness; Regal Leosaur and Teferi's Tutelage. Which card is your favorite?

6. Breena, the Demagogue

Have you seen Simon Dominic's 65th piece of work for the game? Pretty great right? It's our penultimate gold card in today's countdown. I love the use of White and Black in this White and Black card. I love Breena's swirls and the art that made them, and I also really enjoy the face and the details of this Bird. Don't you like it as well? Some other cards by Simon include his Dr. Julius Jumblemorph; Evolution Sage; Experimental Frenzy; Hour of Devastation; Pteramander; Ruin Crab; Sprite Dragon and Zaxara, the Exemplary. If my memory holds this is Simon's first appearance on my lists. Welcome!

Now let's turn to my Top Five proper.

5. Study Hall

Study Hall

Our only land (and only common) in today's list is this fun Hall. I enjoy what the card is trying to do with the Hall and the Study thereof. Andreas Rocha is a great artist here! You can see the detailed windows and the great cast of characters here as well as the door to the left which is my favorite part of the art. Andreas has just 14 pieces to their credit that includes Consign to Dust; Evolving Wilds; Flooded Strand; Terramorphic Expanse and Cragcrown Pathway // Timbercrown Pathway. Not a bad list for just 14 pieces of art, right?

4. Inspiring Refrain

Inspiring Refrain

Our only mono-Blue card is this fun suspending sorcery that works well with magecraft triggers. I adore the art here, just adore it! Check it out! It has the awesome blue eldritch energy that is in the painting and the people are playing an awesome melody that inspires me. The instruments are made well and look gorgeous. From the lights to their hair there is a lot here to adore. Now you will adore it as well! Who created this piece? The popular artist Izzy did! Check out Izzy's other work here. There are an incredible 187 pieces here to also adore. I don't even know where to begin on a list that long! From Absorb to Zof Consumption there is a lot here to like!

3. Audacious Reshapers

Did you know that Commander 2021 is the debut set for Justyna Gil? They have two pieces art - this one and fellow Red card Fiery Encore. Great stuff! I love the lush art in this piece as it feels full to me. The windows? The book? The energy cascading around it? The books to the right of the piece (their left)? The faces? Scrolls? Scroll case looking things on their back? It's just so well done, and I really enjoy it! Thanks, Justyna!

2. Angel of the Ruins

I love the rays on this card emitting from the Angel's hands. See how well-crafted they are? And I love the Angel's metallic sheen that suggests it might be an artifact, or maybe just a creature reflecting the light of the rays, that doubt in my view raises the value of the piece. I love the detailing on the Angel's wings and clothes and the ruins around her as well. How awesome this is! This is also artist Viko Menezes debut set and the only other card they have drawn is Replication Technique. Welcome to my list, and the game!

1. Esix, Fractal Bloom

Hello, fans of Chase Stone! Wow, do I have the pretty card for you! Check out Esix, Fractal Bloom. This legendary dork? Chase just went crazy! Chase just passed 100 pieces of art and is at 102! You might know cards like Ashaya, Soul of the Wild; Bontu the Glorified; Chromium, the Mutable; Dragonlord Ojutai; Experiment One; Feldon of the Third Path; Ghalta, Primal Hunger; Jace, the Living Guildpact; Karn, Scion of Urza; Ruinous Ultimatum; Sorin, Lord of Innistrad; Tamiyo's Journal; and Wrenn and Six. Great list, right! And you can see why Chase Stone leads my list today too, as Esix is just such an unusual piece of art for a key legendary option for Commander. I love the art for it! I love the colors as well as they are awesome. So pretty! Welcome to my Top Ten list Chase!
