Hello casual MTG fans! Today I wanted to knock out the best of the best when it comes to kitchen table formats for the latest set called Modern Horizons 3 Commander version. This is great at kitchen table play since it's designed for it like Commander, sure, but also all multiplayer formats, Highlander ones too, and then Peasant (PEZ), Type Four, Five Color and loads more too. Ready for the new stuff only?
I got you!
#16. Localized Destruction
When analyzing energy counter stuff, one of the key things I look at is whether or not it's good on its own. This five-cost mono-White Day of Judgment is! You net one energy you can spend to save your small power stuff of one, or bigger for more power, by giving them indestructible, and then you sweep the board. You don't need other energy to make this work, it'll just be a one of. Good stuff for the sweeping fun times to commence!
#15. Benthic Anomaly
Hello Blue Eldrazi devoid cast trigger fans! This seven mana nets you a nice sized 7/8 beater with a cast trigger to choose a dork from each opponent, and make a free token that copies it, accept its power and toughness are equal to the total of the copied stuff, and it's colorless and Eldrazi like this one! Free copies for just seven mana on a cast trigger, hard to stop with traditional counters. It's nice to serve with the beats, get the triggers as treats, and then the keyword abilities as feats! This is so awesome!
#14. Hideous Taskmaster
From one seven-cost Eldrazi devoid Izzet colored dork to another is this one, with a 7/2 size this time. The cast trigger here is to steal their dork rather than copy it, until the end of the turn, and then they get untapped, haste and annihilator 1 and trample too to smash. The goal here is to kill fast, and then you get those abilities in this beater. I'd rather steal and kill than make copies, hence it being above Benthic Anomaly. But just by one. The more opponents you have, the bigger this is, and that Anomaly above cannot really copy legendary dorks, so it's more limited, here you can steal their Commander for a turn. Note, also a cast trigger and thus harder to answer. It's great in Type Four with infinite mana, but just one spell per turn.
#13. Infested Thrinax
This five-drop 4/4 flashing Golgari colored dork is next! It has an ETB ability it's built around to turn dying non-token dorks into 1/1 Saprolings equal to their power. This is amazing prior to a mass removal spell on the stack to get mad value from your about-to-die stuff! Or in Aristocrats or Sacrifices before going big on that turn. Might I suggest this with any non-token going wide brew that opens itself up to mass removal, like midrange too?
#12. Sawhorn Nemesis
This 4-drop 2/4 Dinosaur (note type for that deck) is next! When it comes to the battlefield, you choose a foe, and then all damage dealt to them or their stuff by anyone or anything is doubled! You have to deal with this to take it out. Note, that you can choose yourself for things like Commander lowering your life to win with 13 with Triskaidekaphile or 1 with Near-Death Experience. Not too shabby, am I right? I think so too!
#11. Rampant Frogantua
Everyone's favorite Frog is next! This three-drop 3/3 on-curve trampler beater is next! Did a foe die? It's perma-pumped to a 13/13. Then this has a combat damage trigger to self-mill damage dealt and then you can ramp lands milled tapped, massive win-con and self-mill and ramper in one tight three-mana package!
#10. Broodmate Tyrant
Welcome to the Top Ten! This is our top scoring non-legendary multicolored card! Your seven mana Jund color mana will net you a 5/5 flying Dragon plus a free 5/5 Dragon flying token to blink or reanimate. It's an awesome first turn play in Type Four. It needs two removal spells to answer. Then it has built in encore to come back once. That's a very strong problem that needs answered, or else you'll win the game. I hope you like it as much as I do!
#9. Selective Obliteration
From one sweeper to another! This five-cost colorless sorcery will sweep all non-colorless unless it's the color you choose. In this case, this is exiling and also anything, not just dorks are swept. The obvious place is in colorless decks with that double colorless mana symbol needed. Yuppers! But it's also great in any mono-colored decks where you don't have great mass removal options, like Green or Red minus damage based sweepers like Blasphemous Act just for dorks. I love this in those decks since the colorless is easier when you don't need dual lands like Sea of Clouds, but just other lands like Rogue's Passage. Run in in both brews quite ably to save all of your stuff on the battlefield but to exile many opposing things!
#8. Copy Land
Hello all! I've got your perfect three-drop enchantment in mono-Blue! Note this cost is splashable! Then you have it enter as a Copy of any land, not just yours, but it'll remain an enchantment, just like Copy Artifact. That's an old school classic and in Commander it's ramp since you can copy yours or a foe's mana rocks like Sol Ring! Or card draw if it's The One Ring or Skullclamp, and so forth. This is ramp too since you can copy a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Cabal Coffers or Gaea's Cradle. Or just Lotus Field. Or you can copy protection (Maze of Ith), recursion (Academy Ruins), or wincons (Field of the Dead). It's nasty good! Get it and win with it!
#7. Omo, Queen of Vesuva
This three-drop Commander eligible lady is next! She has an ETB and attack trigger like Sun Titan to toss an everything count on your land and dork to make them every land type (even nonbasics like Urza's or Gate) or every dork type. She's so fun! From fixing your mana in a Five Color format and deck type to leading a Commander deck, there is so much to do here! Her splashable three-cost Simic colored is great here! She has made a brand-new archetype in her colors that are not merely landfall or card draw matter or value. J'adore Madame!
#6. Final Act
Our final (and best) sweeping effect is this Black sorcery! Sure, it costs one more than the other two. But it sweeps so much more too! This is the Farewell of Black, since you have the choice of sweeping dorks, planeswalkers, battles, graveyard and counters, like experience, radiation, energy, and poison too, so you might not wanna choose that last one if someone is infected with their impending doom. Dorks and planeswalkers alone should net you loads of value, as well as others. It's here outside of my Top Five since some might feel it's just an overcosted Damnation. I like it the most of the new sweepers, but it can be rough mana wise here too. Get this sweeper and try it out!
#5. Cayth, Famed Mechanist
Hello awesome Jeskai fans! Welcome to our Top Five proper with this four-drop legendary Commander eligible 3/3 size with fabricate 1 to maybe make bigger or make a free token. Your other nontoken dorks you control also have fabricate 1 to grow in +1/+1 counter size or to go wide with the Servos. Then you can tap her with two mana to populate and make another token or proliferate to add +1/+1 counters, loyalty, energy, or poison to foes. I adore her two main options io build around her loads! I think you'll love her new take on token, artifacts, and proliferate matters from the Command Zone!
#4. Planar Nexus
Hello land fans! I've got your next land! This ETBs untapped, taps for colorless and taps with one for any color of mana. It's here on my top list since it is every nonbasics land type! Locus for Cloudposts? Caves? Uzra's? All of them! This is nasty good in that genre of deck! This is our penultimate scoring colorless (sorta, you'll see for what hits higher) card!
#3. Coram, the Undertaker
Top Three Time! Our top scoring (sorta) gold and penultimate legendary dork is this Jund colored four-drop leader!! It has a weird 0/5 body base, but power equal to the greatest power in all graveyards. Then, when this thang swings, you have everyone mill a card, you too. Then in your turn you can play a land and cast a spell that was milled this turn. Note just this turn, but all mills count. There are so many key ways to interact with this, like self-mill, milling others, also sacrificing your biggest dork to make him big, like Phyrexian Dreadnought on turn 1 to make him a fast Commander Damage kill machine in two turns. He is nasty good. When built right he'll break things fast. Hence him hitting this high on my list!
#2. Ulalek, Fused Atrocity
#2 on the list, but #1 in your hearts is our newest five-color, sorta devoid legendary Eldrazi! It has a blocking 2/5 body on a five-cost, and then a tagger for when you cast Eldrazi stuff to pay two to copy it and your triggers too. A five color Eldrazi leader will be an instant hit with Commander fans! This has caused price rises of awesome support cards too. Welcome to our new Eldrazi era, long may it reign!
#1. Horizon of Progress
Our top scoring colorless card, card overall, and land and everything is this do-it all land! It ETBs untapped, and taps with life for a Reflecting Pool of mana options which is a beloved casual classic already. You can tap this with three to drop any land from your hand to the battlefield tapped, and then note that unlike the classic Terrain Generator this doesn't ramp basics, but any land. Or you can sacrifice this for one mana to draw that card and replace itself. Combining Reflecting Pool and Generator into one land is definitely worth the top spot here! This is an awesome addition to all of your decks, no matter their color, and all of your formats from Five Color to Commander.
There we are! I hope that you enjoyed this deep dive!
