Budget Commander #66: All the Rabbits with Cadira

Reddit

Hello Awesome Budget Fans! I hope that you are having an amazing day today! Welcome back to my favorite series, my Budget Commander series, where each deck has to come in under the budget of the previous one, and the first years ago was under $40. We'll look at an Appendix below with the entire stock of Budget Stuff for your consideration.

This series began when I read "budget" decks by other writers that had triple digits budgets. I have been unemployed for a long period while continuing my fandom of the MTG Game, so I know what a budget deck actually looks like. Ready? Let's kick things off with a new card that was just released in Battle for Baldur's Gate!

Cadira, Caller of the Small

Say hello to Cadira, who only costs a quarter here at CoolStuffInc.com! This 3-drop 3/3 in Selesnya colors, rocks trample, and has a combat damage trigger which she can do with her built in evasion. She can also make a 1/1 Rabbit token for each token you control, creature or non, so she'll ramp up quite quickly.

We'll need to add in some more evasion and cheap unblockability, token making, and other synergetic cards all cheaply, but token strategy is a deep cut in these two colors so we have loads of options running around! In fact, I ran out of space with loads of good things on the table.

As a reminder, this budget reflects the time as of the writing of this article about a week before publication and then some time before you read it, and these are fluid, but the basic idea of a mega cheap brew still stands even if the final note differs from yours. My budget for this build is to come under $32.46!

Token Making and Caring Dorks

Orchard Strider
Feasting Troll King

Check out this pair of 6-drops! The common is a 6/4 that makes two Foods on arrival to the battlefield! Then you can basic land cycle it for two mana if you need mana early game. The rare is a bulk rare that has a harsher four g cost but a bigger 7/6 vigilance and trample body. It makes three Foods on arrival to the battlefield, and you can sacrifice them for getting the Troll King back once. Nice right?

Prava of the Steel Legion
Arasta of the Endless Web

A quarter and fifty cents! Prava is a 3-drop 1/4 that pumps your tokens on your turn by +1/+4 and then you can invest four mana and make 1/1s of the Soldier variety. Arasta is a 4-drop reach 3/5 that lets you make 1/2 reachers each time a foe casts an instant or sorcery spell, which happens quite often in multiplayer. Nice duo!

Maja, Bretagard Protector
Hornet Queen

Another quarter and fifty cents! The Human is a 5-drop 2/3 that pumps your other stuff by +1/+1 on legs, and then also landfall and makes 1/1 Human Warrior tokens. Nice! And then the Insect is a 7-drop 2/2 that has flying and deathtouch and then makes 4 1/1 tokens with those two abilities, a nice Commander staple that's a bulk rare in cost!

Token Making Spells

Increasing Devotion
Nomads' Assembly

$0.49 x 2! The 5-drop makes five tokens for one card and costs little on the market, and then you can flash it back for 10 tokens and nine mana. It's a classic. The 6-drop doubles your creature count into 1/1 Kor Soldier territory for six mana and has rebound for another free doubling once more. They're nice little powerhouses and they are less than a buck total.

Call the Coppercoats

This is under a buck too! This powerhouse will instantly let you make X 1/1 Humans equal to the creature count of an opponent and you can strive this mid or late game for more targets and more dorks to double with Cadira's damage trigger.

Synergies

Rabble Rousing
Gala Greeters

$1.99 and $0.49. The Rousing is the only card here with a cost equal to or more than a buck. It is a 5-drop with hideaway 5 and when you swing you double your attacking armies creature count with 1/1 Citizens. Love it loads here. Then if you control 10 or more dorks you get the free cast. The Greeters is a 2-drop 1/1 that can turn an arriving dork into a Treasure token, or a +1/+1 counter on Cadira or a 2 life gain, and not more than once/turn each. Not bad!

Thorough Investigation
Search the Premises

Under a buck and 49 cents. The former enchantment is a 3-drop that will, when you attack, make a Clue token for your cracking for card flow and triggering Cadira. You can also venture into a dungeon if you like, that's the only delving card we have. The latter enchantment is a 4-drop that gives you a Clue token each time you (or a buddy) are attacked. Nice Clue making and card flow!

Killer Service

This is also under a buck. This 3-drop enchantment makes three Foods on arrival in a four-player game and then you can spend two mana to trade a token for a 4/4 Rhino at the end of your turn, which is pretty good for your Rabbits or Treasures or Foods.

Win-Cons

Overrun
Makindi Stampede // Makindi Mesas

Twenty-five cents each! I added this pair to win the game after going wide. The Overruns on creatures are way too pricey for a build like this such as Craterhoof Behemoth, but the original is still just a quarter. And it works here quite ably. The Stampede also costs five mana for a smaller boost and no trample, but it can just be dropped as a land, and I like what it adds here.

Scepter of Celebration
Storm Herd

Bulk rares. Less than a buck total. The Scepter will equip Cadira and give her +2 to her power and then when you smash for damage you can make that many 1/1 Citizens of the token persuasion, so that really enables your board winning fun times. And since we have infrastructure to get in attacks unblocked anyway, that's really strong on Cadira or on other folks with the trample boost. The Herd is a bit pricey at 10 mana, but it makes 1/1 flying Pegasus dorks equal to your life count. I really like this after a mass removal spell like Farewell or Akroma's Vengeance when they think they got you and then... instant army in a can and win the game. Nice in here!

Voltron Things of Note

Prowler's Helm
Sword of Vengeance

We have a few Voltron things here and there. Each under a buck! The Helm will make your Cadira unblockable save by Walls and it's 99 cents. The Sword is a bulk rare 3-drop three equip that gives four abilities and then a double power boost, but the key here is haste, allowing you to get in another hit before defenses setting up for the combat damage trigger and we have some more haste granting cheapies.

Fireshrieker

Fifty cents! Since Cadira has a combat damage trigger we've have built around, getting another trigger each combat is pretty keen. Enter this piece of equipment, which can come down for three mana and equip for two to give our Commander double strike to make tokens twice. Note that the first time will be counted in the second. So that's basically 4x your tokens each combat.

Card Draw

Camaraderie
Rumor Gatherer

$0.49 each. The sorcery is a six cost Selesnya colored card that draws you X cards and gains X life equal to your creature count, and then puts a +1/+1 counter on each of them. That's a pretty strong slate of abilities in a going wide brew like this one. Then the creature is a 3-drop 2/1 that will scry 1 each time a dork arrives to your battlefield save for the second one each turn, which is a card drawn. With just Cadira and nothing else cast, you can get a free card each of your turns as long as you make at least 2 Rabbits. Good synergy here!

Relic Vial

This 3-drop two tap artifact is pretty cheap on the cost and will sacrifice dorks to draw a card each. Since we are making so many, turning one into a card here and there should be pretty easy to do from where I am sitting. You can ignore the last ability I don't think we are controlling any Cleric-y dorks here.

Answers

Release to Memory
Martial Coup

$0.75 and $0.49. The instant is a 4-drop that will Tormod's Crypt a foe's graveyard at instant speed, a good emergency brake for the massive graveyard abuse, and it's strong in response to a reanimation spell like Dread Return, Karmic Guide, Sun Titan, a tapped Academy Ruins or Living Death. You also make a number of 1/1 Spirits equal to your creature count exiled this way which will likely scale up as the game goes longer. Every deck should run some mass removal, and I have three ways to do so that play into the archetype. The Coup is the best with its xww ability to make dorks. If you just need the creatures to win, make four, and double with Cadira to have 8. If not, make 5 or more and sweep the board and keep your stuff. Nice synergy here.

Survive the Night
Kabira Takedown // Kabira Plateau

We have some indestructible granting cards here and there like Rootborn Defenses as well as Survive. This common will give a key dork like your leader indestructible at instant speed and +1 power, so it's a nice combat trick or response to removal. It will also make a Clue token for card flow or Rabbit making. The Takedown is a 2-drop instant that will shoot an opposing dork equal to your creature count, which should be a lot in this deck. It also is a modal land spell for dropping as a land in case you need the mana, or you are on a naked board.

Prizefight

This 2-drop instant will fight one dork you control with a foe's dork and you make a Treasure token for getting all the Rabbits. This is a fun little creature removal and token making common, and it's pretty strong here!

Lands

Basilisk Gate
Heap Gate

Since Gates are cheap, common, and help the deck, I added in a bunch of them. The Basilisk one can tap for two colorless at sorcery speed to pump up Cadira by X equal to your Gate count, so at least one. This cannot be a combat damage trick, but I do like it as a faster clock with your trampling Commander. The Heap land taps for to make any color of mana at a cost of 1, and then can tap for a mana to tap another Gate to make a Treasure which is pretty keen for our consideration as well as a Gate for purposes of the Basilisk one. Nice, right?

Rogue's Passage
Access Tunnel

Check out these two options. The Passage will tap and give any size of a Cadira unblockable until the end of the turn, and this heavily printed card is $0.49 for the cheapest version. The Tunnel can tap to make initial Cadira unblockable prior to equipment or +1/+1 counters from the Gala triggers. It's just a quarter. Both are quite nice here as they add to my evasion options to make sure that Cadira is able to net that combat damage trigger!

Khalni Garden
Vitu-Ghazi, the City-Tree

The Garden taps for Green and enters tapped and makes a 0/1 Plant token to pump up Cadira's Rabbit count as well as block a key attack on your stuff. The City-Tree is a quarter uncommon that can tap for four mana to make, at instant speed, a 1/1 Saproling token. Both of these are key ways to make a common and are quite nice together.

Three cards left!

Non-Gate Cards from B4BG

Ellyn Harbreeze, Busybody
Inspiring Leader

$0.25 each! These uncommons are four and three mana respectively. The first is a fun Peasant that will tap and dig X and draw a card equal to the tokens you made this turn, so with just a Cadira making two or three that's nice, and you just need one to draw a card, and it counts any tokens not just dorks. Nice card flow! The other uncommon will, if you control Cadira, pump your tokens up a nice and tasty +2/+2 each! Good stuff for the win-tough.

Horn of Valhalla

Seventy-five cents for our final card! This Adventure equipment is a powerful xww making sorcery that makes X dorks that doubles as an equipment you can drop for two and equip for three to give Cadira +X/+X where that is your creature count, which is a fast Commander Damage clock later and a mass token maker as well so it's twice as valuable on one card, love it loads here!
