Hello awesome folks and happy days to you! Let's start doing a deep dive into great cards from the latest set of Bloomburrow, for your kitchen table stuff like Commander, Five Color, Pauper/Peasant, Type Four, and multiplayer play. Ready?
Honorable Mention #1. (#13. Overall) - Bria, Riptide Rogue
This four-drop 3/3 Izzet legendary dork is here at the 13 spot! She boosts a strong prowess and she's a prowess Lord giving that to your other stuff too. Then when you cast one one of your dorks cannot be blocked this turn, so she wins in the red zone quite ably, unlike most Spellslingers that win with triggers on things like Guttersnipe. Might I suggest her with token makers like Young Pyromancer and Talrand, Sky Summoner?
Honorable Mention #2. (#12. Overall) - Fountainport
My top scoring colorless card and land is this ETB untapped colorless mana tapper. You can tap it with two mana to sac a token for a card to make them all Clues, or three mana to pay a life for making a free 1/1 Fish token or four mana to make Treasures for ramping. It's fun in the sun from where I am frumping around and reminds me of a Trading Post in land form!
Honorable Mention #3. (#11. Overall) - Ygra, Eater of All
This five drop Golgari colored legendary on curve Commander eligible dork is next! It's hard to target with Ward to sac a food, but all dorks are Food so they can sac that. Your dorks too! Then when a Food is tossed into a graveyard, you toss two +1/+1 counters here for a faster Commander Damage win con. That doesn't say sacrificed, so it'll happen.
#10. Coruscation Mage AND Stormcatch Mentor
This uncommon two-drop PEZ legal Izzet colorless Spellslinger lovers are next! The former has 2/2 body, offspring for 2, and then turns non-dork casts into damage for each foe, like Guttersnipe, but less damage but on more casts. With offspring though, you can turn that into two damage with two things that needed to be targeted for pinpoint removal. The latter one has a smaller hasted 1/1 body with prowess and then your instants and sorceries each cost one less mana to cast, a bit of ramp there. He's pretty good from where I am sitting!
#9. Ral, Crackling Wit
Another Izzet color thang hits, this time it's the set's only planeswalker. This costs four for a four ability four loyalty 'walker. Symmetry. It's static tosses counters here as you cast those nondorks. You can +1 hm to make a 1/1 dork to block attacks with prowess. Or you can -3 him to draw three and discard two, awesome card flow and digging there! Get him, run him, love him!
#8. Starfall Invocation
Get ready White fans! I feel like the goods here are White first and Green second. Everybody else pretty far back. This five cost mono-White sorcery will sweep all dorks. Did you gift a card? Great, now you get a free dork to get recurred that just bit it. Mass removal at multiplayer is almost always card advantage so I am happy to give one who was screwed a card and then let them get back in the game. This is a great adjunct that plays nice while growing your board or answering threats, just like the next card...
#7. Long River's Pull
...or this! You can gift a card to a foe to get a two mana Counterspell like Arcane Denial or Vex, for cheaper. Or you can just use this like Remove Soul to counter dorks for a harder casting cost. Countering a key card can bum them out, but drawing a card often doesn't draw the same ire. I prefer this to normal Counterspells in casual Commander and multiplayer circles. This is great with the aforementioned Vex and Denial. It's fun in the sun!
#6. Tender Wildguide AND Three Tree Rootweaver
This two-drop mono-Green Mana dorks that tap for one mana of every color are next! The first is a nice sized 2/2 Bear with offspring two, and then they'll tap for that mana, and then you can tap them for non-mana after that happens, and then after your ramp is done, tap it to perma pump with +1/+1 counters and then our highest scoring common (Pauper, PEZ) will have a blocking size of 1/3, and then tap for that mana, with no bell or whistles. Also, a shout out to Thornvault Forager that taps for a mana and forages to make more on a two-drop as well.
#5. Lumra, Bellow of the Woods
This is our highest scoring legendary dork and Commander eligible leader and it's mono-Green. Again, you made out. This six drop has size equal to your land count and then reach to block and vigilance to swing at people's faces and hold block for the reaching. He's pretty good from where I am sitting.
See also the great ETB ability to mill four and then Splendid Reclamation your entire graveyard, not just what was milled. Everyone's new favorite Bear has arrived! Enjoy it leading or in the 99 of your next milling, or lands matter or landfall deck now!
#4. Parting Gust
This two cost mono-White instant is next! It's a brilliant answer to a dork since you'll exile it and then give them a tapped Fish. It won't come back. It's a brilliant answer to targeted removal from your dork to flicker it out for a turn and come back bigger. Or you can repeat an ETB trigger. This is one of the better targeted removal spells for Kitchen table play in a few sets. It exiles, note.
#3. The Season Cycle
Next are these five rare sorceries that are modal, give you strong options, for paws, and then the more powerful ones cost more paws to use. Let's look at them in color identity order. The White one makes one 1/1 dork(1), exiles a nonland and they'll draw (2) or a Sun Titan trigger(3). The Blue one draw a card for one paw, you can copy that artifact or enchantment for 2, or mass bounce for 3.
The Black one Edicts everyone for one, draws a card for each card your dying dork you control for 2 (I love that after spending the first three since it happens first to draw three and sweep much of the board). And hs a win con 3 paws. The red one makes tapped Treasures with the first ability, impulse draws two with the second, and Shocks a target when you've cast that spell this turn. A bit of a storm win con. Finally, the Green one puts +1/+1 counters on your stuff, then can destroy all permanents of an artifact or enchantment nature or draw equal to your biggest power finally. It's a nice sweeper. Love this cycle loads since you don't know what folks are bringing to your metagame, so these are very flexible for board state and removal.
#2. Sunspine Lynx
Remember how dominant Price of Progress was in kitchen table formats with many non-basics like Five Color and Commander? Well here is a PoP on a stick! This four-drop mono-Red has a 5/4 on curve beating body! Then when it ETBs, everyone loses life equal to their nonbasics land count, just one this time. Then this also stops life gain to slow burn your fun times and damage cannot be prevented! There's a lot here, but basically, if you run basics, or burn, or damage or want to shut down life gain at your table, enter this Win Con on a stick like Gray Merchant of Asphodel, with less set up needed, but still few colors to minimize its damage to you. Or you can just swing at people's face with that high power. From blink and reanimation, this is awesomely awesome!
#1. Dawn's Truce
My top card from this set is another White one, this time a two-cost instant that answers answers. It gives your team hexproof. Normally these cost three mana and save just your dorks indestructible, not hexproof and then your entire permanents count. Then you can give them indestructible too like Heroic Intervention for gifting a card to your foe if that's needed. This is great with mass removal, targeted removal, and just saving your team from bad chump blocks. This is cheaper than Teferi's Protection, and since it phases, that's better, but not by much. I think you'll love how this plays!
And there we go! I hope you enjoyed my look at the top card from Bloomburrow for this set! Check in next time with the next one from this set for kitchen table play, thanks!
