Decks Inspired by Throne of Eldraine

Reddit

Hello Folks!

I hope your day is going well. As we just got the full spoiler last week for Throne of Eldraine, I wanted to get ready and put together some decks that have inspired my own deck-building juices.

Today I want to give you four decks that I created based on the new cards from our soon-to-be released new plane. Let's take a looksee!

Lovestruck Beast

Hello, shout out to Beauty and the Beast!

Ahhhh...this lil' guy is just so adorable. He just has to have a little 1/1 to commit to combat otherwise, he's just a solitary Noble who can't do anything for you. Just like King Kong or Beauty and the Beast style concepts, it needs a friend to calm it's beating heart.

So how could you make this work?

Llanowar Elves

Well, what if you combined it with a `-drop that's 1/1 and taps to make him on the next turn? The obvious card is a 1/1 Llanowar Elves. The Elves will adore tapping a Forest on the first turn, and then tap for Beast with your two Forests the next, and now you have a quick 5/5 that can swing and dance with the best of them. Note that you certainly can Heart's Desire him for a dork too, and once we have more mana or later turns, we may. But I think a reliable 5/5 on turn two is better than a 5/5 and 1/1 on turn three with the Llanowar Elves.

Pendelhaven
Pendelhaven Elder

There are some fun cards that'll play into this theme as well. Pendelhaven and the Elder from there-in are useful as ways to give your 1/1 a little more size. Seek also the Sword of the Meek, with the same benefit for one of your team. Now, please note that if you Pendelhaven your only 1/1, do so after you swing with your Lovestruck Beast, not before. Also note that you can defend with the guy by himself, you just cannot swing. Just sort of envision him as having defender unless you have a 1/1 to tame his Beast-ly heart.

I am adding in some cards that'll make 1/1 dorks like Beacon of Creation and Squirrel Nest, Dryad Arbors, and more. Growing Rites of Itlimoc? Sprout Swarm? You got it!

Ohran Frostfang
Keeper of Fables

I am also adding in a little card drawing for your consideration as well. Most aren't Humans for your Keeper, and the Frostfang is strong. Enjoy!

Here we go:

I hope you enjoyed this 1/1 matters build! Ready for the next one? Great!

Let's remain in Green and go wide with another options:

Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig

This is Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig. For three mana, you net a 4/4 that grows as you through stuff out onto the battlefield. Nice, right?

Right!

There were a few folks that I considered for my deck above but couldn't toss out there because they also pumped the team. But here? That's no disadvantage!

Deranged Hermit
Deep Forest Hermit

Both the original Deranged Hermit and its Modern Horizons iteration are five-mana dorks that bring four 1/1 Squirrels to the battlefield. Nine power of punchers across five bodies is a rough ask for your foes to answer. If you dropped one out while you controlled a Yorvo, then you'd also get five +1/+1 counter for each one at the same time.

Let me give you one, hypothetical example:

Turn one: Drop Forest, cast Llanowar Elves or another 1-drop Green accelerant.

Turn two: Drop Forest, cast Yorvo for your elves.

Turn three: Drop land. Cast any type of haste-giving effect from Fires of Yavimaya to Concordant Crossroads. Swing for 4 with Yorvo.

Turn four: Drop Land. Cast either Hermit. Drop 9 power, amp up Yorvo. Swing. Deal 9+9. You probably have won that turn.

Now, here's another version of that. Imagine that instead of a haster on the 3rd turn, you dropped Growing Rites of Itlimoc instead, and you grabbed the key land or dork you needed next turn. And you'll drop it for sure, and also have a Gaea's Cradle that can tap for 7 Green mana next turn.

This deck is nasty!

Ready?

There you go! I reused the Squirrel Nest and Rites from the first deck, but otherwise I wanted to play into a slate of new cards.

Earl of Squirrel

Of course I did. This card is actually printable in black border. Damage dealt makes Squirrels? They get pumped? All tokens are Squirrels? All of those are fair for six mana. How could I not run it here?

This card is less silly than many cards that are making their debut in Throne of Eldraine. And, again, nothing here is out of bounds.

It's a maker-of-Squirrels. And it's perfectly on theme as it'll make some dorks for Yorvo'ing.

Yes, our good Giant Noble is a verb now. What of it?

Next?

How about we leave behind Mono-Green tokens for a bit, what do you say?

Good bye Green!

How about we move to your neighbors. Hello White and Red!

Realm-Cloaked Giant

How about a Sweep and Keep tribal build?

Sweep and Keep are my name for decks built around sweeping effects that will destroy most of all of your foe's stuff, while none of yours die. They include bw Pestilence decks that run all Protection from Black creatures, rw decks that use mass burn removal spells with Pro-Red stuff instead, Iroas, God of War rw decks that run instant damage based removal instead, like Starstorm, rg Vigor decks that prevent damage-based removal with Vigor and then grow their dorks, a Mono-Black deck that runs Hellfire, a Mono-White deck touting Mass Calcify, a Wrath of God deck where all of the creatures have inextricable, and loads more.

You get the idea.

Well, Giants are certainly running around in enough numbers to Tribal up, and we can Cast Off the Realm and sweep most/all of our foes' stuff, while also keeping our entire force on the battlefield.

Harsh Mercy

In addition to the card that inspired me, we also have this number that can destroy everything save for Giants. Each of your foes can name a type, but unless they have a dedicated Tribal deck, they won't be able to save all of their dorks. I tossed in two to give you a couple more options.

Irregular Cohort
Thundercloud Shaman

I wanted to add in some relevant earlier Giants. We have cards like Adaptive Automation and Taurean Mauler for the 3rd turn. But don't forget these! The Cohort makes two Giants and is a fine turn four play. If you have dropped one Cohort and one of any other early dork, then a Shaman of the Clouds of Thunder can punch for four damage on arrival to every non-Giant out there adding strongly to your Sweep and Keep theme.

Ready?

Here's the deck!

As you can see I'm trying to run everything from Inferno Titan to Jareth to Brion. Enjoy!

Now what? Great question!

Acclaimed Contender
Militia Bugler

This is Acclaimed Contender and it reminds me a lot of Militia Bugler, which was one of the best cards for keeping the card flow going in White. Militia Bugler was a powerful 3-drop, 2/3 that, on arrival at the battlefield, would let you dig four cards for a dork with a smaller power, and then put it into your hand. The Contender costs the same, and is bigger on the front but trades Vigilance for it. Now, it does dig another card deeply, and can get a wider set of cards - Knights, Auras, Equipment, and legendary artifacts. That's a more flexible dig package than creatures with 2 or fewer power. Now, unlike the Bugler, it digs only with a fellow Knight friend on the battlefield, so for that reason, I'd rank the Bugler as better.

Since it digs for Knights, is a Knight, and needs a Knight to party, the obvious home is... Knights.

Specifically?

This one

Puresteel Paladin
Danitha Capashen, Paragon

Puresteel Paladin is great! You can draw some fun cards as your equipment arrives to the battlefield. You also get cheap equip costs if you can get to three artifacts, so artifact friendly cards are heading in too. Danitha plays into the same space as well as she'll make the initial cost to cost your equipment cheaper too.

The Circle of Loyalty

Let's toss in a single one of these, just for fun! It's legendary for the Contender, and an artifact for everything else.

Hey, since I'm running grey borders in this article anyway....

Want to take a look at my deck? Great!

This deck features 18 artifacts including Metallic Mimic and the Knight of the Kitchen Sink. I included a couple equipment fetchers with Stonehewer Giant, the only non-Knight in the build. I also have the legendary Spear of Heliod for your Acclaimed Contender to grab. Note that we are running several fun effects for your consideration.

Knight of the Last Breath

We only have one natural Giant Knight. If you were thinking of combining these two tribes, it'll require a serious commitment to changelings.

And there we are! I hope that you enjoyed out little quartet of decks today. Anything you'd recommend? Anything I missed discussing? Just let me know!
