Hello awesome and happy folks! I hope your day is going super mega well! Today I wanted to take a looksee at the second Top Ten cards from Duskmourn! This is a deep set, and I normally do three of these with 13 cards each with three Honorable Mentions and then the last one 14 for a round Top 40. Then I do the best of the Commander set that debuts with each set since it is all about the formats I cover in my Top Tens like multiplayer, Five Color, Commander, Highlander, Type Four and Pauper/Peasant.
This time this is dense set, and I have pulled out another seventy-six spots (not including Rooms that are getting a separate talk up in my Marina deck) that are great for a Top Ten before looking at Commander. That includes many cycles, two or three similar cards in a vein like the two equipment that manifest dread on arrival and equip in one slot. That's a ton. That means I could knock out 13 cards a week for another 6 Top Tens with adding in just two more or breaking up two duets into solos cards. Like I mentioned in last week's article here - this is a deep set with a dense slate of great mono-Green and Black stuff. You can see loads hitting there. And I could have easily done Top Ten Black and Top Ten Green and been fine. There will be more.
Ready for the second list? I got you!
Honorable Mention #1. (#13. Overall) - Let's Play a Game
Let's kick off today's list with this fun uncommon mono-Black four cost Charm delirium thing. The three Charm options you can choose are to have your foes' dorks get -1/-1 each as a method for mass removal. Then the middle ability will have each foe discard two cards. That's the default for me normally in multiplayer, it's the same cost as Unnerve, and great card advantage. Or this can be a win con that drains three life from each foe. If you have delirium the you get all three and the card advantage from the discards, mass removal, and life gain and damage dealt is massively game changing in a single spell. Delirium is very easy to get in kitchen table play like Commander or Five Color. This is awesome possum! Black is so deep...
Honorable Mention #2. (#12. Overall) - Valgavoth, Terror Eater AND Altanak, the Thrice-Called; Shout Out to Say Its Name
...as is mono-Green and both here! Originally pulled with one entry each, let's combine these for one call out here. These are pricey, legendary, 9/9 with evasion in two rampy colors. The mythic costs nine, has a flying and lifelink for a double life swing when it connects with its evasion, and basically hexproof with the sacrifice of three things to target it. Stuff heading to opposing graveyards gets exiled and you can cast for life one exiled each turn this way, so that's a 6 life for Consecrated Sphinx.
The uncommon (Pauper Commander leader) costs two less for a trampling evasive with the ability to turn opposing targets into cards drawn. Want to force targets? Coalition Flag! You can also spend two mana to discard this and then ramp a land from your graveyard tapped. That discard is awesome here. Shout out to Say Its Name where this is fetchable with Say Its Name after discarding it to ramp or from the mills or after the milling three cards and then discarding it over and over again. The dorks here are amazing at Type Four with infinite mana but just one spell/turn barring alternate costs.
Honorable Mention #3. (#11. Overall) - Ghostly Dancers
This Eerie five-drop 2/5 flying dork is next with the ETB ability to Raise Dead an enchantment from your graveyard or unlock a door. (Might I also suggest bringing back a Saga?) Then this has the aforementioned eerie ability to turn arriving ETB enchantments or unlocked rooms into 3/1 tokens with flying - note no once/turn there either, they are a win con of flyer making. Note that eerie will trigger when a Room ETBs and then is unlocked later, so that can be a two for one. Also note this will work for enchantment tokens like this set's Glimmer dorks or the Aura tokens from a few sets ago. This is the second-highest charting mono-White card after the only one to hit last week.
#10. Nashi, Searcher in the Dark
Our next charting legendary dork is this two cost Dimir 2/2 menace Bear. It has a combat damage trigger for you to mill cards equal to the damage dealt. Then you can Raise Dead any number enchantment and legendary stuff from the milled group and if not? Toss a +1/+1 counter here to increase that number of milled cards in future combats. I think its synergy is great with Rooms, Sagas, and legendary matters stuff too!
#9. Entity Tracker
Last week none of the stuff that hit were mono-Blue, so this week we're are having a fun three-hit. This is our second highest charting eerie card. It's on a fun three cost 2/3 flashable dork with the eerie trigger to draw! Amazing card flow for no additional cost at all! Just cast and use. The flash here really makes it since this is an ETB trigger not a cast one like Mesa Enchantress. Cast when enchantments are on the stack and your foe's weren't expecting it.
#8. Fear of Imposters
Another flashing three drop mono-Blue dork is next! This time on a 3/2 body that's an enchantment and a critter too! You can counter any spell! Love it! But it's controller will manifest dread all up and down the block. It's worth it for an on-curve counter at three mana and dork too! This is so amazing at all of the stuff from blocking to countering to just messing with your foes!
#7. Balustrade Wurm
This mono-Green on curve 5/5 trampler and haster is next! It rocks the ability to smash from your hand the turn it arrives on a naked board or to avoid getting chump blocked with trample. Then it also cannot be countered either! You can recur it from your graveyard to the battlefield once with its delirium four mana at sorcery speed. Love this Wurm-y beater! Everything from here on out is either Black or Blue.
#6. Victor, Valgavoth's Seneschal
Our final eerie card and card before the top five is another legendary for Command Zone purposes gold dork, this time on a three drop Orzhov 3/3 guy who looks like Kevin Smith. This eerie trigger is so strong since it gets better the more times It triggers like the nasty landfall on Omnath or the magecraft on legendary mono-Red Ashling, Flame Dancer. Here the first time it triggers you get deck manipulation with surveilling 2, and then the next time everyone else will discard a card so card advantage. Then the last time you get a free Zombify recursion from any graveyard! That means your surveilling stuff or their discarded stuff will come back for free. Love this with self-milling or cyclers or channelers that are on Orzhov dorks to bring back.
You'll also need three stuff arriving in one round or unlocking Rooms. Might I suggest in your color Room Grand Entryway // Elegant Rotunda? The two mana will make a 1/1 enchantment Glimmer dork, and then you can unlock the Rotunda for three more mana - five total, to toss a +1/+1 counter on Victor and the dork and then get all three triggers and a free animated dork. Or Lord Skitter's Blessing to make it and the Role for just two mana, and then one more with your other two mana turn 4? Like the Room called Dollmaker's Shop // Porcelain Gallery or I love here Black's Polluted Cistern // Dim Oubliette with synergizes with your surveilling. Or White's Surgical Suite // Hospital Room if you already surveilled away a smaller cheaper dork to recur for free and then another with Victor. This is great stuff!
#5. Meathook Massacre II
Next is this legendary enchantment that costs a massive four Black to start and then will force everyone (you too) to sacrifice X dorks so it scales up. Then when your stuff dies, you can swap three life to recur what died once with a finality counter on it. Then when a foe's dork dies, your foe's can pay three life too, to stop you from animating what died with that finality counter too. Those death triggers are not from this ETBs, but from everything that dies while it's on the battlefield! What kept it from last week's Top Ten was quad Black mana in its cost. It's worth it though. You can run Coffers with Urborg, Nykthos, or even Nyx Lotus to make that mana in a Black or mostly Black deck. It's worth the price. The more life you start with the more powerful your trigger is, like Commander. It would also be broken in Five Color if it were castable, but it's not. If you can make it work it'll shut stuff down!
#4. Marina Vendrell's Grimoire
Our highest scoring mono-Blue card is this six-mana splashable legendary artifact! When it ETBs, if you cast it, draw a massive five cards! Then you cannot lose the game for life loss or discard your hand either. When you gain life? Draw that many too and then you lose life discard that many or you'll lose the game. That's worth it to my mind. It's sort of like a better splashier Lich. Just keep your hand full of goods and damage protection like Healing Salve and Guardian Angel or life gain like Soul Warden et all. Get it and check it out all up and down. Might I suggest running this with bounce and flicker effects to save you from the lost life trigger? Yuppers puppers!
#3. Marina Vendrell
From her grimoire to her! She costs all five colors for a smaller 3/5 ability to ETB and dig seven and draw all enchantments and the rest to your library. Then you can tap her to unlock or lock a Room for free no mana at sorcery speeds! Every five color Commander gets heavy use! There are 28 Rooms printed plus other stuff, and I'll be building around her and writing her up in two Tuesdays. I'll be adding in the good Eerie stuff, some baseline enchantment stuff and probably some Shrines too. That's my hope anyways, get ready for the enchanting, dropping and Room unlocking fun times to commence!
#2. Grievous Wound
This five-drop mono-Black Aura is next! Note it enchants a player like Curses. They cannot gain life and damage dealt to them forces them to lose half their life each time! That is a fast win con. If you are complaining that your five drop just won't win, this will, even for Commander. Just blink or bounce this after the enchanted one dies to choose a new player! I love this everywhere, but it's downright nasty in Rakdos burn or with Pingers like Prodigal Sorcerer or Prodigal Pyromancer. J'adore Blessure grave, n'est pas?
#1. Niko, Light of Hope
Niko was the last card cut from last's article, so I wanted to make them my top choice this time around. Four Azorius mana here gives you a 3/4 smaller body with the ETB to make two Shards that count as enchantments for eerie. Then you can tap Niko with two mana to slow flicker out a nonlegendary dork and it'll return EOT. Then you can make your Shards copies of that dork this turn. Since Shards are better Clues, you can flicker, bounce, recur for card flow or better copies too. Note you cannot copy Niko here with his ability. Remember that Niko is a planeswalker (Nico Aris) in these colors that'll make Shards with the minus ultimate and ETBs with them too. I think this card a great option to lead a Commander deck since they have unique card space.
And there we go! I hope that you enjoyed this look at the second Top Ten and a trio of Honorable Mentions too! Ready for next week? I hope so too!
Your Help Needed!
Hello happy folks! I hope your day is going super mega well! In case you didn't know, I have a YouTube channel called "TheWorstThingAboutNewBooks" which you can find here. I typically do reviews of older Sci Fi, Fantasy and Horror stuff. I am trying to monetize it to help with local costs living back home with parents. I never wanted to when I was working since I wanted to keep things pure. Anyways, I have enough of a sub base, but not hours. In the past year my hours are around 2.8k and I need 4k. I try to keep my three videos/week smaller in length to avoid people spending too much time. To monetize it, I need to get the view count up - I really need your help, so if you could please take a look at some of my older videos that would be awesome possum!
Have an amazing day and thanks so much I appreciate your time!
