Domain and 5-Color Good Stuff with Jenson Carthalion in Commander

Reddit

Hello happy folks! I hope your day is going super mega well. After recently building a Five Color Commander Room deck around Marina Vandrell (It's here - https://www.coolstuffinc.com/a/abesargent-10012024-commanding-five-color-rooms-with-marina-vendrell) and talking about good stuff from the old school Five Color 300 card 25 cards of each color default format of the day that aren't popular in Commander now but could be, it's a three part Top Ten here:

I was in a Marina Vandrell Five Color mood for Commander and the format, I thought it would be great to build a deck around domain and 5C Good Stuff with it...but not from Commander.

Consecrated Sphinx
Bringer of the Blue Dawn

Here's a great example! Every Commander deck in the format is going to need card draw, but instead of the onerous Rhystic Study, Esper Sentinel or Consecrated Sphinx, we'll be running Bringer of the Blue Dawn, with it's five color alternate cost. That's what I mean, plus people won't be looking askance at you as much as the Archenemy. Make sense? Great!

Who am I running as my Commander? Many work here, from Kenrith to Sisay to Cromat to one of the many Niv-Mizzet's. But I feel there are two that are strong here. Jodah, Archmage Eternal that makes everything have the alternate cost of the Bringer of the Blue Dawn above...or...

Jenson Carthalion, Druid Exile
Jegantha, the Wellspring

Jenson! This two-color on-curve 2/2 Selesnya leader can tap with five mana to convert it to one of each color, and then a cast trigger for multi spells to scry 1, and if all five colors, make a free Serra Angel token. Now, here's the question, do I wanna run companion with Jegantha. The benefit of a five mana Gruul free tapping to make one mana of each color for smoothing your mana needs and Jenson triggers makes sense, but you can only run one mana of each mana symbol, so no to things like Wrath of God and Sun Titan. Nope. We are going solo.

Alright, let's start our brew!

Mana, Ramp, Rocks and Lands

Leyline of the Guildpact
Overlord of the Hauntwoods

Let's start with boring mana stuff. I need stuff that turns my lands into all basic land types for instant domain. All are here, but the best is the five color one above that's a Leyline four-drop that will also make your stuff all colors but just things on the battlefield. Then I am running just printed Duskmourn five-drop enchantment dork for 6/5 and impending for three mana and four counters for four turns as an enchantment. That rocks an ETB/attack trigger to make a free land token that'll count as every land type for ramping/domain purposes.

I wanted backups to the every land counts as basic lands, enter Joiner Adept. Chromatic Lantern is here too to let your lands tap for all of their mana needs. It was an immediate Five Color essential. Since our Commander costs two, it will resolve as soon as I have Selesnya color mana, so I tossed in the three Cultivates that cost three mana and fix two colors with one ramped and the other in your hand. As you can from the title, we need domain here. The Weatherseed Treaty costs three, will Rampant Growth on chapter I, make a 1/1 Saproling the next chapter and will turn your Commander or dork into a win con with size boost equal to your basic land count and trample too.

The five-drop ETB tapped Timeless Lotus is slow taps for all of your colors of mana in one. It's worth the tempo loss. Faeburrow Elder has vigilance, taps for one mana of each color you control and has that size, minimum two. Ditto Bloom Tender, also here, an instant Five Color classic when printed. Widespread Thieving costs three, has hideaway 5, and then you'll turn casts of multicolor stuff into Treasure tokens for casts, and you can spend one of each mana for the hideaway cast. Love that adding Treasures to a 5C brew for free. Just triggers.

Cascading Cataracts
Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth
Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle

Now let's turn to lands. The indestructible land will tap for colorless and tap with five mana to make any color of mana of any type. The legendary Green land makes all lands Forests for mana smoothing and your foes' ones too. Ditto Urborg here to make Swamps. I needed win-cons in land form, enter the three-drop red ETB tapped land above that turns ETB Mountains with at least five Mountains arriving to Bolt any target. I also tossed in Field of the Dead to turn landfalls in the right circumstance into 2/2 dorks.

Check out the cycling pair of Ash Barrens and Indatha Triome! The common colorless tapping one basic land cycles for one mana on the first turn. There are ten in the uber cycling three cycling mana of tri lands that count as three colors. All are here. Just one and two basics or two tris can give you domain on the early turns. I am not running the Shock lands, not enough space.

Fun Five-Color Stuff

Maelstrom Archangel
Maelstrom Nexus
Invasion of Alara

Now let's turn to Five Color identity good stuff, and we'll start with stuff from after the Shards of Alara united into one plane. The five-drop 5/5 flyer has a combat damage trigger to cast any spell for free once smashed! The enchantment from the same set costs all colors for five mana, and then the first spell you cast each turn has cascade! The only five color Battle is next with its invasion of the plane too. It has an ETB trigger to exile top of library until two cheap nonlands are exiled. You can cast one for free, you draw the other, the other exiled cards head back to your library. Then the sorcery will draw two, drop a free artifact, create a token copy of any permanent you control (lands too...) add 3 +1/+1 counters to up to three dorks, and then Desert Twister a foe's permanent. That's a strong amount of card draw and free cast/drops too!

Five naturally or seven with bestow, Chromanticore gives the enchanted dork +4/+4 and all of its natural keywords, which are flying for evasion, first strike, vigilance to swing and keep untapped, trample to punch over small blockers with flying like Fog Bank, and lifelink for double life swings when you punch face. From your Commander to beats, that's a win con fast. Jared Carthalion is next with and on curve 5 loyalty and a +1 to make a trample 3/3 all colors Kavu. Then you can -3 him toss +1/+1 on each of two dork you control equal to their color count. Leyline of the Guildpact?

Esika, God of the Tree // The Prismatic Bridge
O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami

The God that costs three for a vigilance mana dork 1/4 blockable dork is next, with the five color five cost enchantment which is why it's here. In your upkeep, you dig until you reveal a dork or planeswalker and then drop It for free and the rest library, not this is not cast, so it cannot be countered. The six-drop five color Dragon Spirit has trample and flying, which we've looked at as great combo before on an on curve 6/6 body. It has a combat damage trigger with, if that player attacked you last turn now they'll lose a nonland thing they control. Nasty bit of vindication there.

Synergies and Winning Conditions

General Ferrous Rokiric
Aragorn, the Uniter

Now let's turn to synergies and alternate win-cons. Let's start with cast triggers. The Boros three-drop 3/1 hexproof from mono to stop targeting has a multi cast trigger to make a dork, in this case a 4/4 two color Golem artifact dork. I also tossed in 1/1 dork making Hero of Precinct One! Then the four cost gold four color 5/5 dork is next with four triggers, one for each color in its identity. Whtie makes a 1/1 dork, Blue scries 2, Red Bolts a player and Green +4/+4 a dork. Note no one-per-turn restrictions here.

My final two gold cast triggers are enchantments that turn them into damage at a foe or all targets. Mana Cannons deals damage equal to its colors to anything, so at least two. I also tossed in Pyroconvergence. Then I moved to domain. The Blue enchantment Collective Restraint will discourage folks from swinging your way, but the mana spent is equal to your basic land count.

Now let's turn to domain token makers. Herd Migration makes 3/3s that are Green. Or you can discard it for two mana and search a basic to your hand and gain some life too. That's nasty here. The gold sorcery Ordered Migration will create 1/1 flyers of the Bird and Blue persuasion for your domain count and triggers your stuff. The mono-Black Voices from the Void will force your targeted foe to discard equal to your count, and the mono-Green Tromp the Domains will pump your team by domain size and give them trample to, a splashable and better Overrun. Love it loads with your tokens ands smaller stuff to kill out of nowhere.

Scion of Draco
All Suns' Dawn

The best domain card is from Modern Masters 2 a colorless 12-drop 4/4 flyer, that's just 2 if you have all lands. Your White stuff has vigilance, your Blue has hexproof, your Black lifelink, Red first strike and Green is trample. That's a keyword soup of stuff for your dorks of various colors. With the Leyline of the Guildpact? The five cost mono-Green sorcery will Regrowth one card of each color to your hand, so normally that's four or five in dedicated five color deck like this. You exile this on resolution, no more recursion tricks with it.

Now let's turn to tutors! I am running the banned in Five Color Bringer of the Black Dawn that tutors in your upkeep and then you can draw it in your draw step. You can drop this early with the five-color alternate cost. There are no combos, just triggers and things to trigger, although you might consider the next card. I also tossed in Conflux. The legendary six-drop 4/4 Ramos, Dragon Engine has a cast trigger to put +1/+1 counters here equal to the colors spent. Then you can pull five to make ten of 2 of each color. Again, no combos here for that extra mana, so it's limited in power here.

Last Stand
Fallaji Wayfarer

The sorcery costs one of each mana, and then does stuff equal to each land of that type you control, ideally with Leyline or other things out to make all lands each land type, plus the Everything lands too. You can shoot one foe for 2 life lost for each Swamp (that's also why Urborg is here), blast a dork for damage equal to your Mountain count, make 1/1 Saprolings to your Forest count, gain 2 life for each Plains and draw/discard for each Island. Love it here. The three-drop Green all color identity is next! It'll trigger your stuff, and then your multi stuff we are building around? It's got...convoke! I think you can see why that's here.

Answers

Now let's turn to answers! Since I am in Blue, I am running gold counters, ones that'll trigger our stuff, like the Azorius duo of Absorb and Dovin's Veto. The rare will counter anything, and then you'll gain three life too. The two-drop uncommon will just counter non-dorks, but its uncounterable, worth it here. I am also running Mystic Snake and Countersquall.

Void Rend will destroy any nonland. I also tossed in Utter End to exile them instead. Then I have the flashable rare Leyline Binding, which can have its cost reduced all the way to one if you have domain. Great against opposing Commander who may not have the mana to just Command Zone recast or anything else.

Drag to the Bottom
The Kami War // O-Kagachi Made Manifest

We need domain dork mass removal, so enter Drag to the Bottom giving all critters, yours too, size minuses equal to your domain count plus one. The six-drop all colors Saga The Kami War will exile a non-land permanent an opponent controls, then you can bounce anything and force discards on chapter two. Then you flip into an all-color 6/6 with all kinds of abilities. Love this here!

Card Draw

Let's finish with raw card draw! We'll start with Dimir non-rare domain spells. Allied Strategies costs five and you'll draw domain; Shadow Prophecy digs your domain cost, and you can draw two, the rest in your graveyard, and lose a pair of life too.

Sphinx of Clear Skies
Nael, Avizoa Aeronaut
Two-Headed Hellkite

Now let's turn to combat damage or attack draws! The five-mana on-curve 5/5 flying with ward 2 to protect a bit will turn combat damage into revealing domain, and then your foe will split and you'll draw one and then bin the other. This is clearly inspired by Fact or Fiction. The Simic flying four-drop 2/4 will turn combat damage into digging X equal to your domain count, and then loads one on top and drawing it if there are 5 lands. The six-drop 5/5 all colors flying, menace and haste is next! When it swings, draw two. Great card flow over time!

Unite the Coalition will have you choose five in any order and number, you can draw five, phase out your stuff to keep it safe, exile opponent's graveyards to stop recursion, Shock, or Naturalize. Nasty here! Baleful Strix ix next, you'll draw when it ETBs, and then no one wants to swing at you to trade down. I also love Tome of the Guildpact here, which will draw you a lot of cards while ramping you.

There we go, ready for my deck?

Domain with Jenson Carthalion | Commander | Abe Sargent

Card Display

There we go! Please remember that there are no annoying The One Ring, Consecrated Sphinx, Rhystic Study, Smothering Tithe, Esper Sentinel, Cyclonic Rift, just the domain and 5C good stuff from that format and then generally things that have all five color identities for Jensen's Serra Angel tokens. I hope you enjoyed my take on this fun decklist on 5C!
