Hello happy folks! The full spoiler for MTG Foundations a new core set for Standard arrived! It has tons of reprints, but great new stuff too for kitchen table play like Commander, other multiplayer and Highlander formats, Type Four, Commander, Peasant, Pauper, Five Color and Commander too. There is no Commander set with it, but it does have a Jumpstart too, which we'll look at later. What are my favorite new cards from MTG Foundations?
Honorable Mention #1 (#13. Overall) - Twinflame Tyrant
Hello red and Dragon fans! This flying five-drop 3/5 will double your damage from any source, to anything! Note there are no breaks here like noncombat, or once per turn, or everyone like Furnace of Rath, your foes too. Lightning Bolts, Blasphemous Acts and combat damage from this are all doubled. Then give them double strike too! Nasty great way to kick off our list!
Honorable Mention #2. (#12. Overall) - Mossborn Hydra
Hello happy mono-Green landfall friends! This three-drop trampler that ETBs with one counter will double its size for each land dropped! Whoa that's just very strong stuff! Get it, try it, love it!
Honorable Mention #3. (#11. Overall) - Hare Apparent
Our first scoring common on my top list is this Bear sized and costed Rabbit Noble that ETBs with a 1/1 Rabbit friend for each one of these you control, and you can have any number in your decks, even Highlander formats like Commander. It'll be bonkers there since it's in the color of token doubling. These tend to be pricey on the secondary market after building up value since they need to be purchased in mass numbers so grab them now.
#10. Quilled Greatwurm
Hello mono-Green fans! I've got your next Wurm with a six-cost, 7/7 trampler on curve with a combat damage trigger to toss counters on what dealt damage equal to the damage dealt! That's for each creature! Wowzer Bowzer! Then you can cast this by removing counters from your stuff! Just one or two hits will build in that recursion.
#9. Archmage of Runes
Do you like drawing cards? More than once per turn? Do you like cost reductions like ramp? Do you like fat butts with a 6 defense that can block loads and a 3/6 body over to keep away X/3s? I've got your new injection of awesomeness, combining ramp with card draw for your spells! J'adore!
#8. Chandra, Flameshaper
This seven-drop 6 loyalty lady is next. Her +2 to make three mana and exile the top cards and cast one is great mana making and card draw in one card and ability, many of her 'walkers do both, but not on the same ability. Then her +1 will make a hasted token copy of something you control that dies EOT! A Kiki-Jiki reflection tap too! Then you can -4 her once with her starting loyalty to shoot a bunch of dorks and planeswalkers for 8 damage split. Love her, but she's broken in multiplayer and Commander once down with that final ability killing multiple stuff across multiple players and such.
#7. Refute
Our highest scoring common and spell (defined as an instant or sorcery) is this new Counterspell for three mana that draws and discards too, so it's card flow looting for your countering fun needs. Some might prefer this to cantripping four-cost Dismiss since it's cheap and the card heads to your graveyard for delirium, reanimation, flashback and threshold purposes. There are sets where this would be #1, but not here.
#6. Niv-Mizzet, Visionary
This six-drop Izzet colored 5/5 flying legendary leader is my highest scoring Commander eligible leader! You have no max handsize, and you'll turn noncombat damage to foes to cards drawn. Not once, like Curiosity, but that much damage in cards! And just for noncombat damage, like Lightning Bolt or tapping that Kamahl, Pit Fighter for three damage too.
#5. Bloodthirsty Conqueror
This five-drop on curve 5/5 flyer with deathtouch is next! It will turn life your foes lose into your life gained. That's the same cost as Exquisite Blood and ability, on an easier to answer dork, sure, but you can get another. For Standard, they just printed this combo kill Sanguine Bond as Enduring Tenacity. Rough to rock. Hmmm ...
#4. Kaito, Cunning Infiltrator
This three-drop on curve three loyalty planeswalker is next with four abilities. Its static will raise its loyalty as your dorks smash face. Nasty! That alone will make this tough to answer with burn or attacks. Then you can +1 him to make your dork unblockable and then also draw and discard. You can also -2 him to make a 2/1 Ninka token for smashing and growing that loyalty or making unblockable. Then you can -9 him to make an emblem to turn anyone casts (you or your foes) into 2/1 Ninjas. Enjoy his new dominance!
#3. High Fae Trickster
If you like flashing things out as tricks, but not your turn, this is your new best friend! Welcome! From Leyline of Anticipation to Vedalken Orrery everyone loves this engine. Here we have it on a flashing four-cost so you can cast it EOT, and then tap out. It's also a flying and 4/2 body so you can flash it for combat fun times to stop a crucial attack. From flashing out blocks to EOT and then attacking with an army they weren't expecting, you can abuse, and then flashing out gives your foes less time to answer card draw like Phyrexian Arena on their turn or combo pieces and cast them all at once.
#2. Sire of Seven Deaths
This seven-cost; seven in the name; seven abilities and 7/7 size our second highest scoring card! Not seventh sorry symmetry fans. Those abilities include two evasion in trample and menace, lifelink for double life swings, vigilance for attacking and holding up defense, and reach to stand back after doing so. Then first strike and ward seven life to protect it. This is nasty for Standard. I'm a little shocked that this was printed since these were just printed in Modern Horizons 3 and that seems better for Modern. It also costs Urzatron mana... cough cough...
#1. Herald of Eternal Dawn
Another seven-drop is here, this time in White with a triple White cost, which is needed, on a flashing flying 6/6 dork. When it's on the battlefield you cannot die and your foes cannot win, so it's a bigger sized flashing color-shifted Platinum Angel! Flashing makes that amazing since your foe's cannot plan around it, and one time kills like Thassa's Oracle ETB win once cannot work with this flashed out. Platinum Angel the better one!
There we go! I hope you enjoyed my first take at the new cards for MTG Foundations! We'll see you next week for another!
