Hello happy Commander fan as well as those for other casual/multiplayer formats like Highlander, Five Color, Type Four, Peasant and Pauper. I hope your day is the best you've ever had, and if not, it will be by the end of the day. This is my second list of the best cards from the latest set called MTG Foundations! It's for new cards from the Core Set, not great reprints. You can find last week's article here.
Ready for this week?
Honorable Mention #1. (#14. Overall) - Banner of Kinship
This five-drop artifact is first! When it ETbs, you choose a creature type and then it arrives with your number of those you control in counters and that kindred type is increased in size by the counters. Every kindred deck moving forward that goes wide will love this, it's better than Coat of Arms since it doesn't work for your foes, and you'll keep that size boost even if some of your guys are killed. Although there are some corner case disadvantages like the boost is set once it arrives, so if you increase the type it won't increase in size too. This works on tokens too...love it loads!
Honorable Mention #2. (#13. Overall) - Leyline Axe AND Twinblade Blessing
Next up is a pair of double strike granting fun things. The Equipment costs four, is free in your opening hand, equips for three, and then gives trample and +1/+1 size too in addition to that double strike. Colorless free drop and another evasion and bigger size too? That trample means if you kill the blockers in the first strike damage phase, the player takes damage in the normal damage phase. Nasty! The Aura cost three in White is an uncommon, has flash and gives it double strike and doesn't leave EOT like some flashing Auras. Powerful permanent combat trick. Each of these will massively speed up Commander Damage or Voltron kills.
Honorable Mention #3 - (#12. Overall) - Rite of the Dragoncaller AND Kykar, Zephyr Awakener
The enchantment in Red makes 5/5 flying Dragons for six mana drop when you cast that instant/sorcery - great for Spellslinger brews like with Talrand, Sky Summoner that go wide! The Azorius colored four-drop legendary leader has a 3/4 flying size and then a non-dork spell cast this time to make a 1/1flying Spirit or flicker your creatures too. It can lead or enter the 99 of your next Spellslinger/Blink brew too!
Honorable Mention #4. (#11. Overall) - Loot, Exuberant Explorer
This fun three-drop rare legendary dork to lead your Commander brew is next! It's got just one power but a big booty of four. You can drop another land each turn and then tap it with six mana to dig six and drop, for free, a dork with a mana value equal to or less than your land count! That's pretty saucy from where I am standing, as free dork abuse in the Command Zone can be broken as we know, but here you need to spend six mana, tap it and wait a turn, and then you just don't know what you'll get, if anything, hence it making my second list back here in the Honorable Mentions, but worth it all up and down, and make that choo choo sound!
#10. Kiora, the Rising Tide
Back-to-back three-drop mono-color leaders! This 3/2 will ETB and draw two like Mulldrifter but discard that many like Faithless Looting. Love it to build up your graveyard for delirium, flashback, recursion or...this's threshold! She has an attack ability with it to make an 8/8 Scion of the Deep 8/8 Octopus. Note it's legendary so you can only make one Octopus, attack and then make one untapped to replace it. Yay for tokens and graveyard fun times!
#9. Celestial Armor AND Divine Resilience
Everyone loves answers to removal, mass or targeted, like this three-drop flashing Equipment that auto equips on arrival and gives it both hexproof and indestructible this turn. It normally equips for three and gives +2 power and flying. The instant one-cost with kicker will give one dork you control (targets for heroic) indestructible. If kicked? As many as you want are targeted too! Love this surprise answer loads!
#8. Koma, World-Eater
Hello Simic colored legendary fans! I called this first for my Commander article from the set, and it's my favorite, check it out here. Why is this is my favorite Commander in the set, even though it costs seven mana? Sure, that's a lot, but he's an uncounterable 8/12 with trample and ward 4 too. Then when you smash face you'll make four 3/3 Serpents, which are not legendary at all. Get it and run it and love it!
#7. Homunculus Horde
This alliteratively titled four-drop Blue rare is next! With a 2/2 body, when you draw that second card each turn? Make a copy token of this! Note that's not worded to work on your turn, but any turn. That means the more foes you have, the more options you'll have to trigger this! Each copy makes more and more copes. Just in one round of turns you could have 8 copies with Brainstorm and on your turn a Phyrexian Arena, on another's activating that Consecrated Sphinx or Mind's Eye. See? Win con fast con!!
#6. High-Society Hunter
This five-drop 5/3 mono-Black rare flyer is next! When it swings, you may sac another dork to pump this by +1/+1 permanently in the form of a counter. You can sac a token dork. Then when another nontoken you control dies you'll draw that precious card! Note that's non-tokens for the card draw. You could sac for the pump but not the card draw, a bit weird. There are no other breaks on the card draw beyond nontoken, so you can draw as many as die in a turn. See why it's here? I hope so too!
#5. Zimone, Paradox Sculptor
Another version of everyone's favorite Simic math prodigy! Her four mana 1/4 body will at the beginning of your combat toss a +1/+1 counter on up to two dorks. Then you can tap her with two mana to double your counters on up to two dorks or artifacts you control only. Note that's not planeswalkers so you cannot target them for loyalty counter doubling since it says each kind of counter, not just +1/+1, like Shield or energy counters on artifacts (or...say....fellowship counters...) She's great fun for the masses leading a Commander deck.
#4. Crystal Barricade AND Rune-Sealed Wall
Next is this Azorius artifact Wall defender duo! The White rare two-drop gives you hexproof, cheaper than Ivory Mask, and a harder to burn body than Aegis of the Gods or Keen-Eared Sentry. Then all noncombat damage dealt to your stuff is also prevented too. Love that with or against Blasphemous Act. The three-drop uncommon Blue wall has a bigger butt at six toughness and then taps for no mana to surveil.
#3. Elvish Regrower
This awesome 4/3 four-drop uncommon Druid is hitting. It's the ETB ability to recur any permanent back to your hand from your graveyard that's makes the cut here! This is not a true Regrowth Eternal Witness for another mana since it's a permanent you return. It's got a bigger body though, and would likely be third in a Highlander Deck after Eternal Witness and Timeless Witness. But you know what this has, in addition to size that they don't have? Good catch kindred fan! It's the Elf type, which means it'll be the first one in that deck. Also, it's power is 4, so for stuff like Garruk's Packleader it'll draw you. Love it loads!
#2. Blasphemous Edict
Our second-highest scoring card on my second list is next! This five-mana sorcery is next! We like mass removal in casual land, and this on will force each player, you to, to sacrifice 13 critters. This will get around indestructible and regeneration. If there are 13 or more dorks this only costs one. Surprise! But even at five mana, it's worth the price of admission! Love it loads! It's even got a two-word title!
#1. Valkyrie's Call
You know what I like in multiplayer? A way to save the team when they die! This will bring them back once as an Angel with flying and +1/+1 counter too! All of the powerhouse things this can enable from Aristocrats bringing back cannon sacrifice fodder to Midrange or Blink recurring ETB stuff like in color Karmic Guide or next door in the color wheel Mulldrifter and Acidic Slime. You can run this in control and sweep the board with Wrath of God and keep your team around. This is a great way to end the second list!
I hope you enjoyed another deep dive into this Core Set's new cards! See you next week!
