Hello happy folks! Today I want to finish my deep dive into the new cards from Jumpstart from the new cards from MTG Foundations too. Since this is a Core Set, many a reprint is here, but I adore here cards for casual sets like Commander, and other Highlander and multiplayer format as well as Type Four, Five Color, Peasant and Pauper. You can find my first Top Ten from this set here. Ready?
Honorable Mention #1 (#14. Overall) - Brigone, Soldier of Meletis
Hello Heroic fans! This two mana 2/2 Bear has vigilance and is a Commander eligible dork too! Her heroic trigger will toss a +1/+1 counter here and then you can tap her to remove one to draw a card, for no mana down, just pure card draw. She's strong in or leading a Heroic brew, but with just the one color, she's better in the 99 to my mind.
Honorable Mention #2. (#13. Overall) - Gilded Scuttler
This three-drop common (Pauper and Peasant) 1/3 Blue Crab is next! First of all, it's unblockable, nice! Second of all, it's an artifact dork for those that need double nice!! Third of all, it'll tap lock something for two turns like, say, their Commander, triple nice!!! I thinks that's a lot this is doing from Voltron to Artifacts matter or Edric deck that need an unblockable and tempo dork too.
Honorable Mention #3. (#12. Overall) - Qala, Ajani's Pridemate
This four-drop uncommon 3/3 in White has that name call to toss +1/+1 counters here for life gain. Then when she swings the other folks get boosted power equal to their counter count. You can also mana sink 4 mana here to gain a life to trigger her. Love her loads, but she's more of a support piece hence her hitting back here on the second list and Honorable Mentions.
Honorable Mention #4. (#11 Overall) - Generous Pup
This dog-dorable dork is next! This two-drop 2/2 Bear with vigilance has just one ability! Did you add a +1/+1 counter here? Okay! Put one on its friends too! Hello cutie!
#10. Cynette, Jelly Drover
I adore this fun little pretty art fun thing too! She is adorable with the four-drop 2/2 giving your flying team +1/+1 and then making a 1/1 Jellyfish flyer on arrival and leaving. She's great for taking lead or in the 99 of various flyers.
#9. Taborax, Hope's Demise
This 2/2 flying three-drop has lifelink with enough counters on it, and then when your nontoken stuff dies you'll toss one here. Was it a Cleric? Draw that sweet sweet card and lose a life too! I'm sure you can see why this fun Aristocrat and Cleric thing is here...right? Right!
#8. Hurska Sweet-Tooth
This Bear loves that honey, err...Food when it swings. It's on a 3/3 body for three mana legendary. When you gain that life you can pump him that size by spending Selesnya mana. That's not bad, but he is my lowest scoring of the hybrid-colored new dorks in the set. He's just not that special.
#7. Shardless Outlander
This seven-drop colorless 6/5 trampler is next! Note the two colorless mana basic land cycling there so this can fit into any Commander or Five Color brew and then sort your mana's need like Forest for that Explosive Vegetation in your hand. It's also common for Pauper/Peasant purposes too!
#6. Slinza, the Spiked Stampede AND Woodland Liege
Hello happy Beast Buddies! I've got your leader here! This five-mana mono-Green 5/5 legendary Beast gives them a cost of two fewer. Then you can get them to arrive bigger with a +1/+1 counter and then you can spend two Gruul mana when a 4-power dork arrives to have Slinza fight them. I built around it here - https://www.coolstuffinc.com/a/abesargent-11262024-commanding-gruul-fight-beasts-with-slinza. Meanwhile you can drop the three-drop 2/2 common that draws you that precious card when your Beasts arrive! Love this pair loads!
#5. Cleon, Merry Champion AND Frontline Heroism
This Solider duo is next! When the dork arrives you can target it with a spell to exile the top card and cast it. He is on a 2/2 body with double strike so I like here creature pump stuff that target like Giant Growth or Rancor. Fast Commander damage or Voltron kill. Then the three-drop enchantment makes a 1/1 Soldier with haste on arrival and then when you target just one of your dorks you can make another token and copy this and target the new token.
#4. Evereth, Viceroy of Plunder
This three-drop legendary lady is next with a 2/2 flying body. You can sac a dork or artifact at sorcery speed for no mana investment to give her a +1/+1 counter and then if is was a Treasure, she gets lifelink that turn. Then you can spend two mana when she dies to shoot each foe equal to her power, so she's a bit of a win-con, and that ability is Rakdos so she's got that color identity instead of Black. Love her loads leading a Rakdos Aristocrats or Sacrifice deck. You can run Blood Artist and such!
#3. Aphelia, Viper Whisperer
This two-drop deathtouch legendary mono-Black with a 1/3 size is next! She has an attack trigger to spend two Golgari colored mana and then make a 1/1 Snake with deathtouch. No one will want to swing back your way into a token with deathtouch. You can mana sink five here to let your Gorgons and Snakes that damage a foe to do half their life in damage and she's a Gorgon too...rough time at the theater. She's just awesome possum!
#2. Taeko, the Patient Avalanche
This four-mana mono-Blue 4/5 Turtle Ninja ETBs tapped, and then when another dork you control leaves without dying, you can scry 1 and toss a +1/+1 counter here. Then when he swings you can spend Dimir colored mana and then make something unblockable. I built around the ninjutsu and other self-bouncers here - https://www.coolstuffinc.com/a/abesargent-12032024-building-dimir-bounce-in-commander-with-taeko-the-patient-avalanche. But you could make this flickering too instead. J'adore Taeko, n'est pas? Mais oui!
#1. Plagon, Lord of the Beach
This three-drop mono-Blue 0/3 is our top card in the final list, and my final card from both Foundations and its Jumpstart! Yay! This Blue colored dork ETbs and draw card for each dork with toughness greater than their power. Nasty card draw! Then you can spend Azorius mana to make a dork you control assign combat damage with its toughness. Azorius has tons of these, like Kraken Hatchling or Wall of Omens. #13 above? Love it loads! Get it, run it, love it!
There we are so...what did you think of my final and second list of new cards for kitchen table play? Let me know in the comments below and thanks for everything! See you next week when I get back to my Top Pinpoint Removal Spells we are in Blue next.
