Hello happy folks I hope your day is going super mega well! Today I wanted to look at my top Pinpoint Removal spells for Black for Commander and multiplayer. This is a sequel to the Top Ten White Ones Here - https://www.coolstuffinc.com/a/abesargent-11082024-top-ten-pinpoint-removal-spells-from-White-for-commander-and-casual then the shorter list for Blue here. Now today we are knocking out one of the best pinpoint removal colors - Black. Note this is removal, not temporary answers like Pacifism or bounce. Ditto pinpoint removal, not mass like Damnation. Also note that since this needs to answer the target we need to answer, so things like them choosing a sacrifice like Diabolic Edict are out too.
Honorable Mention #1. (#11. Overall) - Murder
Ah yes...the classic! This three-mana common instant will destroy any target dork. Unlike things like Doom Blade, it can destroy them all, and it's a fun, cheap on the market, non-plussed way to start my list! Welcome to my list Murder!
Honorable Mention #2. (#12. Overall) - Drown in Ichor with a Shout Out to Grim Affliction
Hello happy proliferate fans, I've got your next two removal spells here! The sorcery costs two reduces their size by -4 /-4. Nasty! That's better than destruction at that size since it'll get past indestructible and it proliferates too! Shout out to the instant that tosses a -1/-1 counter for three mana and then proliferates too, love this duo much!
Honorable Mention #3 (#11. Overall) - Baleful Mastery
This splashable four-cost will exile a dork unlike Murder, a better answer since it cannot come back, or a planeswalker too! Better range of targets! And you can drop its cost to just two if you gift a card. Yay! It's nice that way since the person may not mind as much or in multiplayer to make friends, since you can target someone other than the lost dork/'walker for that card. Love that politics way much!
#10. Dismember
This three-mana instant with Phyrexian mana can -5/-5 that dork! We've already seen how great that can be with the proliferating one above. This one is instant and can be cheaper but lacks the extra power. It can be as cheap as one mana if you pay four life. Love its power loads. This is the second-highest scoring set -X/-X effect, love it loads, enjoy!
#9. Infernal Grasp
This two-mana instant will destroy any critter, yay! No Doom Blade like restrictions here...but...you'll lose two life sad. It's worth the cost in Commander but less so 20-life formats. It's nice everywhere though.
#8. Hero's Downfall
This three-mana instant is next! It'll destroy either a creature or a planeswalker! And no targeting restrictions. Just cast and kill! Kind of like fishing.
#7. Tragic Slip
Hello one mana removal fans! I've got your removal spell here! You can instantly drop a dork in size by -1/-1 and a massive -13/-13 if something died that turn. From Aristocrats to Sacrifice there are tons of archetypes this is a must include in. Note this doesn't have to be your dork that died, just any dork! This is the highest hitting set -X/-X effect! Get this common and shrink that size!
#6. Bitter Triumph
This two-mana instant destroys two possible targets like Hero's Downfall, but you'll have to spend three life this time, not two, on resolution like Infernal Grasp above. The extra mana from Hero's Downfall and target and is likely worth it in Commander, but, again, other formats...your milage may vary.
#5. Fell the Profane // Fell Mire
This four-cost modal spell // land is next! It's the first spell on my Top 5 Proper! The instant will destroy the target in question of a planeswalker and critter, and then no other effects. Nasty good! Then the land can enter untapped with the loss of three life in case you need that mana now, totally worth it in 40 life formats. This is a new Commander Classic, and it has to be here since you don't have to pull a nonland for it like normal, just pull a Swamp. Love it, you probably do too!
#4. Deadly Rollick
This four-mana instant that exiles a dork is next! Exile is nice as we've talked, and four mana is pricey without the option to target a planeswalker or others. But this is free if you control your Commander, and it's a classic there. But there are a few caveats why it's back here, if you don't control your Commander that's a pretty pricey cost. I'd rather have in my hand Baleful Mastery so I can exile a planeswalker or drop the cost to two. Hence, it's here.
#3. Profane Command
This X spell sorcery is next! With a double Black to start you can force a foe to lose X life, kill an opposing dork for -X/-X and give them Fear or Reanimate an X-costed critter. Since this can kill, it's here, but it doesn't have too. You know any list of great Blue counters would include Cryptic Command even though it doesn't have to, the same is true here. It's pretty and sexy and cool. This is the highest scoring -X/-X literally this time, not set.
#2. Nekrataals
Next up are the class of dorks that arrive and destroy something too, like Ravenous Chupacabra or Shriekmaw. They are awesome since they leave behind a body to block, attack, grab equipment and love them so much! They used to get more play, but they should get more! Run them and love them!
#1. Withering Torment AND Feed the Swarm
This final spell count will conclude our list! Destroying dorks and planeswalkers was Black's thing, but we just got two more spells that destroys dorks and enchantments instead, at the cost of life. The uncommon three-drop instant just printed will have you lose two life, totally worth it! The two-cost common sorcery will destroy but this time the life loss is its mana value, and that's much worse... It was just reprinted in the new core set and both are Standard legal, weirdly. Enjoy this final duo!
