Hello awesome Commander players! Today we are going to be looking at one of the most beloved archetypes of all time and my favorite Commander leaders. What's that? Landfall! Let's look at it now!
Honorable Mention #1. (#14. Overall)
I adore this on curve, Gruul, 4/4 4-drop that lets you drop another land on each of your turns for another go around the Landfall trigger. Then you can self-bounce a land and give something trample for 2 mana and then play it again for another slate of landfall triggers. You can also ensure two triggers when topdecking later in the game after dropping all of your lands with their ability. They kick butt all up and down.
Honorable Mention #2. (#13. Overall)
Ah yes, the classic and first Landfall dork. Printed before landfall, and was heavily played as soon Zendikar was printed. This 3-drop lady has a small 1/2 body, but you can drop, not one, but two extra lands each of your turns! Nasty. Three landfall triggers. She's amazing in any of the 99 of any landfall deck as well as the leader too, since most landfall stuff is Mono-Green. She still hits hard and smashingly powerful as a leader of everything from Lotus Cobra to a certain Avenger of Zendikar.
Honorable Mention #3. (#12. Overall)
Printed way back in a pre-con Commander deck long ago! This four-mana Naya colored 3/3 Elf is the first of my leaders! This has two abilities. First, in your combat phase, you turn a land into an Elemental X dork with trample and haste equal to this guy's power, so minimum 3/3. Then your landfall here will toss a +1/+1 counter on a dork you control, ideally Obuun to pump your Elemental making. Obuun is very strong at all of the right places!
Honorable Mention #4. (#11. Overall)
Let's knock out our first Simic colored dork which is quite common here. This 4-drop 3/3 Hill Giant is next. When a land dork you control deals damage to someone, you draw a card, so it's like a limited Coastal Piracy on legs in the Command Zone. Then in your combat, you'll turn a land into a X/X flying Bird with haste equal to your hand count. You can see how powerful that is together with land dorks like Inkmoth Nexus or Faerie Conclave or Dryad Arbor or turning lands into dorks like this. And then when added into a landfall shell you are drawing or getting mana or going wide with dorks like normal. Nice synergy here and we know how powerful Simic Landfall support can be!
Number Ten
Hello my Gruul loving fans! I've got another landfall leader for you, Omnath take 2! This 7-drop 5/5 has two abilities. His landfall will make a 5/5 Elemental dork. Nasty size and sticks around. He's worth the mana with that landfall alone. Then when your Elemental dies, you'll Lightning Bolt something. You can kill something, a planeswalker or another player too. I have Omnath in a real life Commander brew built around Wildfire effects to ramp, drop him, Wildfire and keep what Elementals I dropped, and then if any died, I can use their death triggers to kill wounded stuff. It's here (Wildfires In Commander - Star City Games).
Number Nine
This 3-drop three color 3/4 that adds Black to Simic or Blue to Golgari is the cheapest a three color could be, and sizeable too. When you draw your 2nd card each turn, a foe loses 2 and you gain it too. Then you can tap them and sacrifice a dork to Explore. Draw, draw drop a land tapped. If you have a landfall that made a dork, you replaced what you sacrificed. If you ran an untap landfall, you can untap them and keep it up. Also, if you have eight or more lands, you keep drawing and dropping lands as much as you want. See how awesome this can be? You'll love it with haste like Lightning Greaves or Thousand-Year Elixir. This thing is pretty nasty in most landfall decks and was just printed last year.
Number Eight
Our first Jund colored leader is this four-cost big bodied 5/4. When it ETBs or swings you can put a land from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped so add in cycling and channel lands and fetchlands and other-sec lands to get multiple landfall triggers. Then you layer in three discard land abilities to get stuff and you can draw, gain life, or save this with indestructible for the turn. This thing is in the color of haste enablers like Anger to punch and get two triggers on your first turn.
Number Seven
Let's head back to the Simic landfall lovers of Aesi! This six-mana Serpent for you Deep Sea Lovers is a 5/5. Its landfall will draw you a card, nasty! Then you can play another land each turn to net a 2nd landfall from it and others. It's very strong and beloved and became the default Simic Landfall for many players and have never left it.
Number Six
Everything from here on up has a unique color identity! Our only planeswalker on today's list is this popular Jund colored 5-drop 5 loyalty 'walker with three abilities. His +2 will discard to draw one, two if it was a land. Then his -3 will drop two lands ramped from your graveyard, so that's two landfall triggers. Then he can be your Commander as well. Like the earlier hitting Windgrace in these colors, he wants cycling, channeling, or sac lands for his -3 or his +2 or other discards like Big Score.
Number Five
This five-mana 3/5 deathtouch will keep folks from attacking and trading and lifelink to get that life boost. Then this Temur Elemental Horror will double your ETB triggers of stuff you control, so it's a Panharmonicon for all of your stuff! It's here in today's list doubling your landfall triggers like Retreat to Hagra or Scute Swarm. It's a very powerful opportunity for the breaking of faces. Love it loads!
Number Four
Everyone's favorite five-mana Golgari colored 6/6 Frog Horror is this fun thing! I don't get why it's got deathtouch on a 6/6, like Grave Titan a bit overdone. This will let you sacrifice a land in your upkeep, you draw a card with your reverse landfall but death trigger, and then you play another land like Mina and Denn before! This awesome funky dork gives you two landfall triggers, two death triggers for cards, and then a cheap body 6/6. Note the card flow works with discarding lands too, by the by, like the aforementioned cycling and channel lands. Nice!
Number Three
Ah yes, everyone's favorite uncommon Landfall Commander ever printed! This Simic 5-drop 3/3 is my 3rd best Commander in this Archetype and is my highest Simic one. As you can see, she has just the one landfall ability! When a land ETBs, you draw and gain a life. Nasty! She has no bells or whistles to annoy other folks, she's just all good stuff here, so she doesn't often get the fury of the table thrown at her, since she's a 5 mana 3/3. Despite her lack of power, she is running a massive 4.8k decks over at EDHREC.com so she's still running that show!
Number Two
Ah yes, everyone's favorite combo of Thalia's White with the Golgari stylings of The Gitrog Monster! This is our last Black leader. This 4-drop is an on curve 4/4 beater with first strike and the nasty deathtouch, so, as we learned from Glissa long ago, no one will ever block with that unless they were chumping anyway like a 1/1 token. Then you can play another land on your turn for landfall. Then your opposing dorks and nonbasics ETB tapped. Good tempo! When you swing you can sacrifice a dork or land to draw that precious card! Nasty stuff for the winning fun times to commence! And then there was one!
Number One
Everyone's favorite four color landfall legend, is this 4-drop 4/4 which is a cantrip and draws and then landfalls into a 4 life gain, then making 4 mana to ramp, and then shooting everyone else and their planeswalkers for 4 damage the third time it resolves. Life gain, ramp, and win con all in one dork! This thing dominated all formats and is beloved at Commander leading your deck too! Nothing else could be here!
Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed my looksee at the best landfall Commanders of all time!
