Building Extra Upkeeps with the Ninth Doctor in Commander

Hello happy folks! I hope your day is going most majestically well! Today I thought it would be fun to drop another of my rarely played archetypes I've never built around in Commander form. Today we have a very niche angle for Commander play: the extra upkeeps one. Normally around 90 of them are run by Obeka. The rest are split up and we are going to head into my love of Doctor Who for The Ninth Doctor and Clara Oswald his companion.

Here they are! As you can see, the Ninth costs three Izzet mana for a 2/4 hasted dork that has an untap trigger in your untap step to get an extra upkeep this turn and then his companion Clara is a colorless six mana on a 2/6 body and then I can choose her color. Then my triggered abilities of my Doctor's do it twice. That includes more than the Ninth by the by, so you might see a few more hit up and down the block.

Let's turn to ways to tap the Ninth Doctor other than attacking to tap and get used for his untap in your untap step. The three mana any mana tapper is first and taps a legendary dork into that mana too! That fun Green tapping land often arrives tapped and then taps with two and a dork to make a Food for life giving purposes.

I added in a few one-drop dork ways to accelerate into our three-drop commander on the second turn, like Birds of Paradise and Delighted Halfling and then it's uncounterable too, great with two Commander dorks. Then I needed land ramp for Clara since that's a fifth-turn play with them out. Not great right? The three-mana Kodama's Reach or Cultivate can drop Clara on the fourth turn with a dork or mana rock. Overall, I tossed in 15 ramp spells, rocks or dorks.

Now let's turn to synergy and upkeep triggers. The Blue tapping legendary land Trenzalore Clocktower arrives untapped and then adds a time counter on it too and you can pull off 12 with a tap and two mana to Timetwister yourself only and then exile it too, but only if you control a Time Lord. The three-drop uncommon Replicating Ring taps for a mana of any color and then in your upkeep you'll toss a counter here and then make eight free copies if you've got eight counters and then pull them off. Nasty good here!

Now let's turn to this three-set! The four-drop enchantment in Green you become the monarch and in your upkeep you can drop any land to play from your hand, and a dork too if you are the monarch which isn't needed at all here. The three-cost suspend one spell Rampant Growths one land. The four-mana sorcery suspend two mana and three turns is next! You can exile the top and drop your first land untapped and ready to reveal and then the rest head to the bottom of your library and they then this will resolve every three turns from there on out with suspend until countered. Or faster with this good stuff.

Fun Upkeep Stuff

Now let's turn to fun upkeep triggers and let's start with this uncommon duo that make dorks in your upkeep. The Green five-drop uncommon Shrine does it for every Shrine you control so minimum one and then the four-drop red one makes you the monarch and then for free you'll make a 3/1 Knight and then if you are the monarch you can kill each foe for damage equal to your dork count. Upkeep trigger win con and token maker too!

Court of Vantress turns you into the Monarch too and in your upkeep if you are the Monarch you can make a free copy of any artifact or enchantment anyone controls! That means their The One Ring or Ghostly Prison or your stuff, and it sticks. The seven-drop Dragon dork Skyline Despot is a flying 5/5 body and you become the Monarch when it ETBs and then in your upkeep if you are make a sweet 5/5 Dragon with flying! The Standard-legal reprint Dragonmaster Outcast is a 1/1 that also makes a 5/5 flying dork in your upkeep of the Dragon persuasion but only if you control at least six lands easily done here. Love this trio way much!

Mycoloth ETBS with devour two and then in your upkeep you'll make 1/1's Saprolings equal to its counter count, enter Karn's Bastion or the Green Court. The ascending five-drop Tendershoot Dryad will make one of the Saproling nature and 1/1 size in each upkeep so the more players the better! It also pumps them with that city's blessing too. The four-drop 2/2 Master of the Wild Hunt will make Wolves in your upkeep and will tap them all and then shoot your opposing dork for their total power and then dealt back to like a giant fight.

Synergies and win-cons are next! The three-drop Aura will net me an extra upkeep each turn. Then the eight-drop Sphinx and six-drop Aura will in my post-combat phase give me another beginning phase so I can untap, upkeep and draw. The dork has a 6/6 flying size too,

The six-drop mono-Blue enchantment Extravagant Replication in my upkeep will make a copy of any nonland I control from my Sol Ring to the latter stuff or Paradox Haze above. Strionic Resonator will tap with two mana and then copy any triggers above like ETB stuff or my upkeep triggers or The Ninth Doctor. Then the four-drop legendary Lithoform Engine will tap with two to copy those or activated abilities and then with three to copy spells and then with four to copy our permanent spells.

Fun stuff here! The six-drop Simic Doctor can turn casts of historic stuff into a copy of it and then just once per turn. The two-cost instant can copy the next dorks spell this turn and get another if it's legendary for copies like The Ninth Doctor as well as Spark Double here. The five-cost sorcery will rebound once and make a token one that's nonlegendary too.

The three-cost enchantment As Foretold will in my upkeep toss a counter here and then I can once per turn cast a spell for free for mana equal to or less than the counters here, fast but I have no kill stuff here like Time Warp or Time Stretch. The three-drop enchantment rare Court of Cunning gives us monarch and then in my upkeep any number of players can mill two or ten with the monarchy. Venser's Journal costs five and then no max hand size and then in my upkeep will gain my hand size in life great life support there, strong trilogy to end this section!

Answers

Now let's turn to those sweet sweet answers! Our first instant group of answers are great at answering tricks or removal or stuff with that giving my stuff hexproof and indestructible. I've included Heroic Intervention to that effect, with Arcane Denial or Counterspell preventing opponents from casting things or Desertion taking their countered critter and dropping to your sweet sweet battlefield what was countered.

I tossed in Beast Within and the trio of Court of Ire, Bridgeworks Battle, and Chaos Warp for varied removal options. The five-cost monored enchantment arrives and you gain the monarchy and then in your upkeep it'll Shock any target or seven damage if you are the leader. Wow, that's a lot. The three-cost fight spell // land will pump your dork by two to. Nice! Then the three-cost instant Red spell will shuffle anything but they might get something nice back, great for keeping friends like Arcane Denial above.

The uncommon Standard-legal mass bounce spell bounces all attackers and doesn't target. It punishes people that attack your way after you attack for untapping the Ninth Doctor. I also tossed in Maze of Ith so they'll need to attack with two or more and then more will bounce. The three-mana bounce target can bounce anything that ain't a land, even spells! And it's a modal spell too. Our Red Shrine will shoot a dork or player in your upkeep equal to your Shrine count so minimum one while out.

Now let's turn to card draw ideally in my upkeep like Phyrexian Arena, but we aren't in that color, but the six-drop rock that taps to kill a small target and draws without losing that life is! The legendary artifact and enchantment will in my upkeep toss a counter on them and then draw equal to the counter count and then the first will stop discards too. Don't run them both to save from mass removal at the same time.

Scrawling Crawler costs three, 3/2 size and then in your upkeep each player draws so it's nice and then they take a damage but not you so here that'll draw and kill fast. The five-cost Red enchantment Stolen Strategy will in our upkeep exile the top card of your foes' library and you can cast them with any color mana. Nicely done, then the uncommon Blue Shrine Honden of Seeing Winds is last and it draws equal to your Shrine count in your upkeep minimum one.

The Tenth Doctor

Let's finish the deep dive with card draw. The pricey sorcery draws you two, and then exiles with three counters and suspends. Or you can suspend it with three mana early. The five-drop dork in red with an okay 5/4 size and then in your upkeep each player will exile cards each the top cards from their library until they exile a good nonland and you can cast two for free. Nasty! The other five-drop Izzet colored 3/5 Doctor has an attack trigger to exile until you exile a nonland and it gets suspended with three time counters to cast early. You can typically ignore his second ability since we only have a few suspended cards here.

There we go! I hope you enjoyed my looksee at this archetype! Who would you build around and how? I tossed in a bunch of Monarch stuff since we'll be attacking with the Ninth to steal tit back and then mass token making to keep it and I tossed in Rogue's Passage and Access Tunnel to help with that. But many Monarch cards aren't here, would you add them in? Like Dawnglade Regent, Keeper of Keys, Fealty to the Realm or Regal Behemoth aren't here, although Throne of the High City is. Thoughts?
