Hello awesome artifact matters MTG and Commander players! Today, I've got something fun for you! We are counting down the top Commanders for your artifact matters Commanders that care about them! This is the most beloved archetype in the game on EDHREC.com. Get ready for a deep dig! This is my list, not necessarily the top picks in that archetype on the aforementioned EDHREC.com or elsewhere. Please note that this list does not include types like Treasure (#2 Overall) or Subtypes like Equipment (#5) or Vehicles (#24). Just Artifacts.
Number Sixteen
Ah yes, this classic Commander eligible 4-drop planeswalker with just three loyalty. He is still Commanding a massive 2804 decks over at EDHREC.com. He debuted as the leader of his preconstructed Mono-Red deck. You can +2 him to discard up to two cards, and then draw that many! It's a nasty way to fill your graveyard or discarding bad stuff. Then you can -2 him to sac an artifact and recur one, like the classic Goblin Welder or Trash for Treasure! It's very good to get that broken recursion in the Command Zone and can be done on arrival to the battlefield and then -2 and stays out with a loyalty. This ability is broken with Mindslaver or Memory Jar.
Number Fifteen
Hello all! Jhoira is next, she costs two Izzet colored mana for a 2/3 with a mana free tap ability! She's in 2188 decks! Your tap tosses two counters here. Then you can drop, for free, an artifact from your hand to the battlefield equal to less than your counter count. Free stuff from your hand is better than free stuff from your graveyard, and you have access to the artifact loving Blue mana too. Then you can do this turn after turn, hence her hitting one spot higher. But you have to build her over time, so you can only drop a 2-drop when you tap her, and you have to wait a full round to use her with the tap, unlike Daretti above, who can Goblin Welder on arrival. That's why she's barely better than her planeswalker buddy.
Number Fourteen
Our top scoring mono-black dork (5200 decks) is this leader of a Commander deck from the Warhammer 40k world! This 4-drop Hill Giant sized dork rocks two abilities that care about artifacts. The first is to make two 2/2 artifact dorks when an artifact leaves your graveyard. Note that will work each time, but not all in once. Tormod's Crypt on you would just trigger once. But an Obzedat's Aid recursion would work once, and then a Bojuka Bog once, and such, you want this to be recursion. Then at the beginning of your combat only, you can give an artifact critter +2/+2 for the turn. It's great fun for the winning and you can recur and trigger and then pump what you recur. That's why this fun thang is here!
Number Thirteen
Hello all! This 2-drop partner in Boros is next! They clock a 0/3 body, have power equal to your artifact count to win fast with Commander damage, have first strike and vigilance innately, and then partner to combine into other colors or leaders, like Silas Renn, Seeker Adept or stay in color but power up with Ardenn, Intrepid Archeologist. Akiri is the flexible powerhouse for everyone's attention. They are in a massive 4350 decks as a partner Commander.
Number Twelve
Everyone's favorite Jhoira, she's leading 3806 artifact brews, but a massive 6284 decks in everything. She has a Hill Giant cost and body size, and then one simple cast trigger ability! You draw when you cast an artifact, Saga, or legendary. That makes her an Enchantress for Artifact decks in the Command Zone you can rely on and build around. Note the card draw trigger is when cast, so you'll draw even if countered, and not ETB for tokens to trigger or flickering. Jhoira is massively good!
Number Eleven
In 3779 decks, just in Mono-Blue, but this 3-drop 1/2 is our first Mono-Blue dork on today's list. This costs one fewer for each artifact you control, so that's giving her affinity for artifacts, and we know how abusive that is already since Command Tax won't hurt her much. When she ETBs, you mill four. Then you can tap her, and recast an artifact in your graveyard. Sure, you have to cast, so it's not as strong as Daretti above, but you don't sacrifice an artifact to make it work either. She taps, so you have to wait a turn. That's why she is so awesome!
Number Ten
When Shards of Alara debuted with her in it, this color type called Esper was built around artifacts matter. This Sphinx is a throw back, used to be heavily played as Commander, but she's still leading 1826 decks, but that's a drop in the bucket to her prior highs. This six mana 5/5 flying has a an ETB trigger like Emry above. This time, you can recur, for free, an artifact from your graveyard to the battlefield. No casts like Emry, no sacrifices like Daretti, just one free, but this is just once, not over and again like Emry, but you don't have to wait a turn to use to tap her. That's why I like Sharuum one better. She's in the color of flicker effects like Momentary Blink to net this repeatably. Sure, she's pricey at six mana, but three colors that all love artifact, and then has a sizable body with flying to swing in the red zone and has an immediate impact on the battlefield. I adore this lovely artifact Sphinx.
Number Nine
Our top scoring Boros leader was printed in a Commander Precon! Your four mana nets you a powerful sized on curve 4/4 with vigilance to swing and block. Then you can spend a mana any time to sacrifice an artifact like Daretti to grow the power of a dork by two. Then you can spend X and tap him to exile an artifact with that mana value from your graveyard and make two tokens copies at sorcery speed. Sure, you exile it, and that's sad, but that's three versions of the card if you sacrificed it, and two if you discarded it to something like Faithless Looting. You cannot recur things more than once, so there is a break here, but two copies is just downright good. Love this Boros colored guy loads, and he is running a strong 6745 decks.
Number Eight
Our first Grixis Guy is this 5-drop 5/4. On curve! Then you will copy a non-dork artifact with a token that's has haste, is a creature with a 4/4 size, and dies at the end of the end step. A free copy of something every turn is nasty good from where I am sitting! Sure, you can only copy non-critter artifacts like Sol Ring or Ichor Wellspring, not Solemn Simulacrum, but a free ETB trigger every time and death trigger too with the sacrifice EOT. That's awesome and powerfully built around. He's leads a massive 6241 decks! Fewer than Osgir, but I think he's better and gives you more colors to build around.
Number Seven
Everyone's favorite colorless Silver Golem. This 5-drop has power equal your fattest artifact's cost, not your count, note the difference, for a big Commander Damage win-con. He does count himself, so minimum 5/5. Then you can add colorless mana to your pool in your upkeep equal to your artifact count this time, and you can use it only for artifacts, which you were built around already! He wants to go wide for mana and tall for swings. Recently printed, he's in a strong 2565 decks and you run and love him, but there is another secret one that hits higher in colorless.
Number Six
Everyone's favorite Mardu Artifact Commander is Jan! Designed for Commander in the Legends set, this 3-drop 3/3 with haste has two taps. They sacrifice something, but don't require anything else like mana, and with haste, you can do them on arrival. First, you can sacrifice an artifact dork to make two untapped Treasures. Get your ramp on! Then you can as a non-critter artifact to make two 1/1 Construct artifact dorks. The idea here is to tap him once, sacrifice fodder, then tap on your next turn and keep it up. He is not easily abused with untapping since that's Simic colored things like Puppeteer or Seeker of Skybreak. It's harder to abuse him. But that happens, and you can abuse the ETB stuff in red of artifacts or leaves play of Disciple of the Vault to win. He leads a massive 4847 decks! Love his power level loads! Run him, love him!
Number Five
Our top scoring mono-colored dork and Top Five entrant is Modern Masters Urza! He dominated all of the formats he was legal for. Your 4 mana gets you a 1/4 with an ETB trigger to make a win con in Construct artifact form of size equal to your artifact count. He's Blue for blinkage. Then you can tap your artifacts like Treasures for a blue mana, so he's ramp too. Then you can spend 5 mana, shuffle, exile and cast the top card of your library, so he's sick with free card stuff too. He's brokenly good and leads a massive 10758 decks! Nasty!
Number Four
Ah yes! The other sneaky "Artifacts matter" colorless leader! This 3-drop has flash, and a 1/2 flying body. All of your artifacts and colorless spells get flash! A flash enabler in the Command Zone is nasty good! From flashing out blockers to removal like Meteor Golem or All is Dust, this is brokenly awesome in your Command Zone, and cheap for recasts. It's just running 2752 decks...so get it, run, love it!
Number Three
Another Esper leader that, like Daretti, was made for this archetype!!! Your three mana nets you a 2/2 Grey Ogre with two activated abilities. For you Animate Artifact into a dork with power equal to its size. That makes beaters, blockers, and surprise stuff. Then her Orzhov colored activation will give an artifact dork both deathtouch and lifelink to really keep the attackers away while you have an untapped artifact to animate and trade up with. She is so awesome in all of the spaces out here. I run her in my Commander Cube and folks really enjoy her build! She leads just 2247 decks...what are you thinking about?
Number Two
With 10507 decks, you'll probably aren't surprised to see this Urza in my 2nd spot overall and top Esper Artifacts Matter leader! He has the same CC as Sharuum, but smaller and without flying. It has affinity for artifacts dorks only. That's brilliant for recasts, but harder to really push and make work. Then? They'll get menace. Not too shabby. Then EOT you'll make a free beater equal to your artifact count again. Which will be menace too. He's pretty solid too, and works well with artifact dorks like tokens.
Number One
Duh...could there be any other lady here? She's the only option to unlock all four colors. She's the only option to be so beloved she is leading a massive 12287 decks! She's old school and new school. Her four mana nets you an on curve 4/4, Human that's legendary. Then when she ETBs, you make two 1/1 Thopters with flying that are artifacts. That means 6 power and toughness for four mana across three bodies. That ain't bad! Then you can sac two artifacts for two mana to: Lightning Bolt a player or planeswalker; kill something by dropping it's toughness by four, or gaining 5 life. She's so powerful and good!
There we are! I hope that you enjoyed my take on the best Artifact Matters Commanders!
