Hello, Commander fans, today we are talking about one of the most popular archetypes in in the format and wow do I have something fun for you! Today I wanted to brings you my Top Choices for Support Cards for this popular Archetype that aren't Commanders leading the brew I've already touched on here. These are for my support cards.
Please note that today's list does not include other popular Artifact type support cards like tokens, Treasure, or Equipment or Vehicles, just pure proper artifact support stuff. Ready?
Here we go!
Honorable Mention #1 - Familiars
Hitting my 7 spot even are the category of cost reducers by 1 mana each called Familiars since they will work for an entire class or color of card like Sunscape Familiar. Love this class loads since they can act like ramp for a few spells each turn like Jet Medallion in black. Also, since most artifacts are colorless, they can be free with enough of these! Get it and run this pair!
Honorable Mention #2 - Protection from Targeted Removal
Next are those that'll give protection from targeted removal to keep your pretty artifacts safe from abuse. This pair are great examples with the blue legendary one a smaller body but giving your stuff hexproof without any dials or wheels so you can target them is brilliant. Then the free limited card draw in your upkeep is similarly brilliant - love it loads. The white one has evasion in the form of flying, and then a better on-curve body, but she'll give your artifact stuff shroud this time so you cannot target it, but then only if you have metalcraft. It's not too shabby either, and a better body, but a worse set of abilities for your decks. The Blue one is smaller and without a great set of red zone stats, but the Angel is massively on curve and protects your stuff too.
#5. Two Drop Equipment/Auras that Give +1 Power for Each Artifact You Control
These three common Auras/Equipment all banned in Pauper are next, one just insta-banned like Memory Jar before seeing play! The first one printed gives just a power boost for a faster one mana equip but you can instantly equip with black mana giving it that color identity. The other Equipment has a +1 butt and then is living weapon so it arrives as one, and equips for a slower two mana, but is in Rakdos colors this time adding Red. Then the Aura in White gives a +1 toughness too and adds Enchantments to the boost. But while this is more powerful, it's just an Aura. I love this trio on Commanders for a fast Commander Damage kill. Get this slate for the fast beatings!
#4. Goblin Welder AND Daretti, Scrap Savant with a shoutout to Academy Ruins
Next is the nasty free recursion power of swapping an in-play artifact for one from your graveyard! The best, first, and most dominant one was the one-drop 1/1 Goblin from Urza's Block with the ability to simply tap to sacrifice an in play artifact and bring back another. Nothing else is needed, no mana, no discards, just a simple tap. This is ideal with self-sac artifacts that dominate like Mindslaver, or ETB/leave play triggers like Solemn Simulacrum. This was turned into planeswalker Commander form in Daretti with a +2 to discard and draw up to two for recursion and then -2 to Goblin Welder. Shout out to the land Academy Ruins that'll tap with two mana to reload a graveyard artifact to the top of your library. It's not as broken, but not as hard to set up either.
#3. Tinkers with a shoutout to Urza's Saga
The best is Tinker, but that's banned here. Transmute Artifact is great but on the Reserve List. The next best is this pair. The artifact dork is on a five-mana dork with a 3/5 body and a tap. You can sacrifice three artifacts to Tinker. The sac of three for one is worse, card wise, but if you get a game ender like Blightsteel Colossus or card draw machine like The One Ring, that'd be worth it. You can also sac three Treasures or tokens too. After Tinker and Transmute Artifact, the next is Reshape, the X spell Tinker in blue that nets you a tutored artifact but you had to spend its cost in X. Shout out to Urza's Saga which tutors any artifact to the battlefield without a sac, but just a one drop or less, like Skullclamp and Sol Ring or a land.
#2. Mystic Forge
Next is this four-drop colorless artifact that acts as a Future Sight for colorless and artifacts by letting you cast them from the top of your library. Note that's cast, not play, so this cannot drop lands from your deck. Then you can tap it with nothing to swap a life for exiling the top card of your library so you can keep on casting the good stuff. I do enjoy the card advantage this will bury your enemies in a little better than cheating them into play with costs. Why? Well, this is colorless and fits into every deck that rocks this theme, but not Welder and Tinker. Plus, this is not card disadvantage like those, but a card advantage machine. Get it and run it and I suspect you'll be surprised by how good this winds up being!
#1. Flash Enablers
The one major issue with running a deck loaded with an emphasis on permanents is that you cannot typically play them instantly in response to something, like a dork to block an attacker. But with flash you can also just drop your hand EOT and then untap and swing with your newly minted stuff or keep it from a round of targeted removal or after someone casts a mass removal spell. I also love flash enablers that have flash too!
Enter this four-set! The first artifact enabler was Shimmer Myr, on a 2/2 body with three mana. It's evolved over the years and recently we've had Gandalf the White from The Lord of the Rings.
There we are! Enjoy my top support cards for Artifacts!! What are yours?
