Hello happy Room fans! I've got you here! I wanted to look at my choices for the top Rooms from Duskmourn. This list is for casual kitchen table play like Commander, multiplayer, Highlander, Five Color and Type Four.
Let's look at Rooms briefly. They are an enchantment subclass you can cast either side. That side triggers it's Unlock Door trigger. So, for example you could cast Cadaver Lab and get it's unlocking Raise Dead half for one mana. Then you can spend the mana on the other half to unlock it. This is sorcery speed, doesn't use the stack, but the triggers too. When it ETBs it'll trigger eerie then again with the unlocking the Room. For five total mana you can have out both Defiled Crypt and Cadaver Lab.
Ready for my list, which is separate from the Top Cards from that set since I needed time with it? I just wrote up an entire article Commander 5C Marina Vendrell brew around this earlier this week, so check it out here.
Here we go!
Honorable Mention #1. (#8. Overall) - Painter's Studio // Defaced Gallery AND Derelict Attic // Window's Walk
This Rakdos two set is all about that first room to draw/impulse two cards for three mana, and on an enchantment form you can recur or bounce and replay and trigger your eeries and Mesa Enchantress too once more. The Red back half can for two mana make your attacking stuff one power bigger and the Black one for four mana just one dork rises in power and then gets deathtouch too.
Honorable Mention #2. (#7. Overall) - Dollmaker's Shop // Porcelain Gallery
This two-drop front side will make a free 1/1 Toy artifact when you swing with one (or more) non-Toys at a player. Then you can spend a massive six mana Room to have your dorks get size equal to your critter-count. It's a nasty game-ender for going wide stuff like tokens or Aggro. They are very synergetic together!
Honorable Mention #3. (#6. Overall) - Secret Arcade // Dusty Parlor
This mono-White Room duo is next! As you can see, the first one will make all of your nonlands enchantment types, spells too. For just five mana, that alone is worth the price of entry. You can draw with Enchantress, make dorks with Sigil of the Empty Throne or get bigger with Ethereal Armor. The three-drop Parlor will turn casts of them into +1/+1 counters on a dork equal to its cost. This can really break your face in with its synergy with your stuff.
#5. Walk-In Closet // Forgotten Cellar AND Greenhouse // Rickety Gazebo
Next are mono-Green three costs that'll help our lands! The first lets us play our lands from our graveyard and that's Crucible of Worlds on enchantments for that deck to love another or an enchantment version. The Cellar here for two more mana will Yawgmoth's Will this turn to cast all stuff. The second let's our lands tap for any color of mana for smoothing and then the four-cost other half mills you four and then Regrowths any two permanents back to your hand from them. Love this mana smoothing with graveyard interaction much!
#4. Dazzling Theater // Prop Room
Another permanent carer like enchantment one a couple of spots earlier. This time dorks. They have convoke with your four mana front Door. Then your three mana one on the back end untaps them each untap step, so the more foes you have in multiplayer the more power that is. That back one alone is worth the addition to a deck, and the front is pretty strong and they work together as you tap for convoke and untap with the Prop Room. (I love it with Vees/Mounts too.)
#3. Central Elevator // Promising Stairs
Next is this literal alternate win-con. The first room at four mana tutors for a Room and puts it in your hand. Then you can move to three mana to unlock the Stairs and then in your upkeep you get a free surveil and a win if you have enough unlocked doors and Rooms. Everyone loves the Gate fetching and win con named Maze's End, so this should also make folks pretty happy.
#2. Funeral Room // Awakening Hall
The Zulaport Cutthroat three-drop Room in a harder to answer enchantment is next! We all know how powerful and beloved it is. And your stuff is very much dying. Then eight mana later you've recurred all dead stuff from your graveyard to the battlefield. Tethering that recursion to a death trigger both strong is nasty good, and before you think that eight mana is too much, this is an added part of the card and Black is very rampy with Cabal Coffers and Urborg. Love it loads!!! But nothing else could be #1 so what is?
#1. Restricted Office // Lecture Hall
This is! My top card generally and then for all deck types and not specially for various archetypes and then also for Type Four too. This Azorius four cost ETBs and sweeps the board of all bigger powers from 3 on up. Then you can spend seven in Blue to give all of your stuff hexproof save it. Sure, seven mana is pricey in the non-ramping color of Blue, but your sweep has giving you time. Also Type Four since you have infinite mana but just one spell per turn so you can cast one and unlock the other that turn or wait for future turns and not take up a spell slot. It's pretty sexy in decks running both colors!
And there we go! What did you think of my top Rooms from Duskmourn? What did I miss or forget? Just let me know!
