Hello happy folks! I hope that your day is going super mega well! Today I wanted to look at my tier list of Commanders for Duskmourn. I will be ranking them based on their overall ranking as leading a Commander deck, not in the 99. Since the ones from the Commander expansion are designed for that format they are unfair here. Just the 19 from Commander are here
Ready? I got you!
S-Tier
Let's start with the S-Tier stuff! Kona, Rescue Beastie is the best mono-color Commander since when she is tapped post-combat you'll drop a permanent for free to the battlefield. We all know how powerful effects like that are in the Command Zone, and then I built around her (article coming tomorrow!). Five-color Commanders like Marina always do well. She's a cheap 5-drop that ETBs to dig seven, draw all enchantments and taps to lock/unlock a door. I built around her here. Niko costs four in Azorius colors to come with two Shard tokens and then they are better than Clues. You can flicker a nonlegendary dork and your Shards become copies. Love their unique abilities! The Boros colored 3-drop 1/4 haste is next, with the ability to tap and copy a dork for the turn that adds on haste, flying, and 1/1 Ballons. Great cards!
A-Tier
Dimir Nashi costs two for an evasive 2-power body and a combat damage trigger to mill that many and draw a legendary and enchantment from the milled stuff. Rip has the tapped combat damage trigger, this time you'll dig his power and draw dorks and Vehicles with different power. The Mono-Red 1-drop Norin 2/1 cannot block and when your stuff is blocked you can flicker them. That's a brilliant way to keep them from dying in combat or reuse an ETB dork or retrigger Purphoros. Victor is nasty with Eerie triggers that scales up the more times they happen in a turn. First surveilling 2 for card flow, then everyone else discards, then third a free Reanimate. Winter is a Jund 4-drop 3/4 with ward to protect a bit early game. At the beginning of your upkeep, everyone draws two, and then once you have delirium, everyone else will has a smaller hand size based on the number of card types in your graveyard. Nice A-tier!
B-Tier
Arabella is a 2-drop 1/3 Boros colored artifact that gains life and drains it for each small power dork you also swing with. She's my favorite, I built around her here. Our set's only colorless Commander is next, the 2-drop 2/2 Toy. It copies all activated abilities of stuff you control. The colorless drops it to B-tier since it's harder to suport in the Command Zone. The Mono-Blue 3-drop 10/1 body is next. It's unblockable, and it's damage will turn into milling of all foes not just the one damaged! Nasty, but milling can give people fuel, so it's in the B-tier. The Simic colored 3-drop is next, with a smaller 1/1 body. She has an EOT trigger for making a legendary dork if a land entered and you have a prime number equal to the land count, a slower win con. But there are a few dials here on her to stop her like ETB, EOT so you cannot equip with Lightning Greaves, prime numbers and Legendary, so just one at a time. Hence her here.
C-Tier
Welcome to the middle and in this case, penultimate Tier since there are no F. The Golgari colored 4-drop artifact Scarecrow with a 2/3 body and ETB ability to make two 1/1 flying Insects is first. Its Delirium will give all Insects and Spider deathtouch and +1/+1 size. An anthem in the Command Zone! The massively pricey Valgavoth is next with a 9 Mono-black cost 9/9 with flying and lifelink to double damage. That ward for three nonlands is nasty, and your foe's will exile stuff as it hits the graveyard and you can cast the with life instead of their mana value. That's he most powerful on the battlefield, but that cost?
Tyvar is a cheap 3-drop in Mono-Green on curve 3/3 you can save from destruction by tapping your critter. Then you can spend five mana here as a sort of Overrun that doesn't give trample but does make them bigger. Another 3-drop is Toby. He makes a 4/4 dork on arrival that cannot swing or block alone and is in the colors of blink. Your tokens get flying if you have enough, and we know how much casual players love their tokens!
D-Tier
Our final Tier! Altanak is a Mono-Green uncommon with seven mana for a 9/9 trample and if targeted you'll draw that card, it's a fast Commander damage kill, but pricey. You cannot discard her as your Commander in your Command Zone. She's better in the 99. As is The Wandering Rescuer with flash and convoke and double strike and 3/4 body. She'll give your tapped dorks hexproof to save them with flash and convoke from removal. But in your Command Zone your foes will know and plan around it. I'd prefer her as a surprise.
There we are! What did you think of my Tier List from this set as Commanders? Let me know.
