Ranking Wilds of Eldraine's Legends As Commanders

Reddit

Hello folks! I hope that you are having an awesome day today! I want to do something fun for you, by looking at the legendary creatures from the recent Wilds of Eldraine set and putting them into tiers based on their effectiveness as a Commander.

We're going to work from S Tier down to D Tier. Ever since Commander came into its own, thus requiring the printing of more legendary creatures, very few have been Fs. Ideally, you'd expect more Bs and Cs, so let's look and see where Wilds of Eldraine stand! Many uncommons are lower since they are often created to build around in Limited.

S Tier

Agatha of the Vile Cauldron
Eriette of the Charmed Apple

Let's start with S Tier and these two Witches! Agatha is my favorite Commander from the set. She brings a brand new Gruul (Red-Green) colored activated ability archetype to the table and is a highly-efficient 2-drop. Fellow CSI writer Matthew Lotti built around her here (Toil and Trouble with Agatha of the Vile Cauldron | Article by Matthew Lotti (coolstuffinc.com)). Eriette is my second option for the top tier, with her ability playing as a kind of reverse Voltron in Orzhov (White-Black) colors, which is a brand new archetype too. I built around her here (Reverse Voltron with Eriette in Commander | Article by Abe Sargent (coolstuffinc.com)), where I put positive Auras on my opponents' things.

Rowan, Scion of War
Will, Scion of Peace

Rowan and Will are tied for last two spots in S Tier. Both cost three in two colors, have 6 total power and toughness, and evergreen keywords and tap abilities to reduce the cost of X spells in their color combos. Rowan is the more powerful option and I built around her here (No Pain No Gain: Building With Rowan, Scion of War | Article by Abe Sargent (coolstuffinc.com)), where I ran her with everything from Mana Crypt to Ancient Tomb to Painlands. Will is more synergetic and life gain is a very popular archetype. Matthew Lotti also built around Will, and you can read about it here (Big Life and Big Spells in Commander with Will, Scion of Peace | Article by Matthew Lotti (coolstuffinc.com))

A Tier

Hylda of the Icy Crown
Talion, the Kindly Lord

Now let's turn to my four choices for A Tier. Hylda is our third and final witch, and Talion is one of the major players in Wilds of Eldraine's story. Hylda creates a new "tappers matter" archetype, but that's not as powerful as our S Tier Commanders, so she's here. Mark built around her here (Commanding Wilds of Eldraine: Let it Go With Hylda of the Icy Crown | Article by Mark Wischkaemper (coolstuffinc.com). Talion is a nasty, Spike-y powerhouse that punishes opponents that casts spells containing a number between 1 and 10 anywhere on the card. It's been built mean online, but I like him in Group Hug so your foes will want to trigger him with Howling Mines. Mark also built around them here - Commanding the Wilds of Eldraine with Talion, the Kindly Lord | Article by Mark Wischkaemper (coolstuffinc.com).

The Goose Mother
Yenna, Redtooth Regent

These two are interesting. The Goose Mother makes Commander Classic Hydroid Krasis into a legendary to lead your deck, making Food, drawing cards, and sacrificing for life gain too. Stephen built around it just recently here (The Silly Goose Mother in Commander | Article by Stephen Johnson (coolstuffinc.com)). Yenna is a fun new Commander for Enchantments-matter builds, especially Auras if you copy them. I built a Budget Commander around Yenna here - Budget Commander #73 - Yenna's Cheap Enchantments | Article by Abe Sargent (coolstuffinc.com).

B Tier

Beluna Grandsquall
Greta, Sweettooth Scourge

We have eight Commanders in B Tier, so we'll sift through them quickly. Most of these are mono-color options or draft Legends that play okay as Commanders but there are better options, or these are newer options that don't have enough support yet. Beluna was built around by Stephen here - Beluna Grandsquall in Commander | Article by Stephen Johnson (coolstuffinc.com). Greta is a Golgari (Black-Green) Food Leader, but we have better choices.

Imodane, the Pyrohammer
Johann, Apprentice Sorcerer

Imodane is a fun take on Mono-Red burn, but I think people prefer Torbran, Thane of Red Fell. Stephen built around her here and broke her - Imodane, the Pyrohammer in Commander | Article by Stephen Johnson (coolstuffinc.com). Johann is a great Izzet (Blue-Red) Spellslinger leader, but we have no shortage of better options.

Lord Skitter, Sewer King
Totentanz, Swarm Piper

Lord Skitter, Sewer King and Totentanz are great takes on Rat brews, which are popular since so many decks run the rats that allow you to run any number of copies of themselves, and not just in Commander. However, there are better tribal options out there.

Kellan, the Fae-Blooded
Syr Ginger, the Meal Ender

The final two here are Kellan and Syr Ginger. Kellan is just another Boros colored Aura and Equipment matters leader and Mark built around him here - Strike True in Commander with Kellan, the Fae-Blooded | Article by Mark Wischkaemper (coolstuffinc.com).Then Syr Ginger is unique as a colorless Commander with a cool sacrifice trigger. It's hard to make that work in Commander, though.

C Tier

Goddric, Cloaked Reveler
Neva, Stalked by Nightmares

We had a ton of B Tier but only four options in C Tier. These are all uncommons that aren't doing anything new, or mono-color options that don't do anything powerful. Goddric is the latter, and he's a powerhouse in Standard, but offers little in Commander. Neva is a 4-drop Gravedigger Orzhov Commander that can also Raise Dead an enchantment. That's not anything new or exciting.

Syr Armont, the Redeemer
Troyan, Gutsy Explorer

Syr Armont is a Glorious Anthem for your enchanted stuff, but at five mana it isn't doing enough with the Monster Role warrant the cost. Troyan is an awesome Simic colored mana tapper, but only taps for that mana for X spells or five cost things. Five Cost is done better with Gandalf, also just printed. Stephen built around Troyan here - Double Feature: Troyan, Gutsy Explorer in Commander | Article by Stephen Johnson (coolstuffinc.com).

D Tier

Ash, Party Crasher
Ruby, Daring Tracker
Sharae of Numbing Depths

Let's finish with my three D Tier picks, also all uncommons that are just not powerful enough with new genres (Sharae) or have better options for their colors. Ash and Ruby cost two and have haste to swing or tap for mana but just aren't that deep. Paige built around Ash here as a Pauper Commander (Exploring Pauper Commander: Ash, Party Crasher | Article by Paige Smith (coolstuffinc.com)) and then Mark did Ruby here (Uncommon Eldraine Commanders: Beginner-Friendly Ruby | Article by Mark Wischkaemper (coolstuffinc.com)). Then Sharae is just a new tapper, but Hylda is better at that archetype.

And there we have it! What did you think of my Tier List for WOE Commanders? What would yours look like? Until next time!
