Hello happy Commander fans! The latest type that debuted was "Battle" and there are 36 from March of the Machine. This Siege type arrives with toughness and an ability under your foes that doesn't repair each turn, and then takes damage with attacks like normal, and then when it's destroyed you'll get the Battle flipped to your side of the table with a nastier effect. How do these play in Commander? Let's look at my top ones!
Honorable Mentions
You can exile a nonland a foe controls that's not exactly two colors like their Commander in a three color brew, or one color Rhystic Study, The One Ring, Elspeth, Sun's Champion or Alela, Artful Provocateur. Then when you've destroyed it becomes a 5/5 dork with a spell cast for Guild colors to dig six, and draw a two color spell. No once per turn limits there either. Its colorless nature really amps it up in Commander for me.
Hello happy mono-Blue spell fans! When this five-drop ETBs you'll Mystical Tutor but put it into your hand so it's not card disadvantage, or your graveyard or outside the game like Cunning Wish. Then when you kill and flip, you'll get an enchantment that turns spell casts into free copies, and not just the first one either. It's awesome possum in decks with great spells to Tutor and copy from Time Warp to Fact or Fiction to Lightning Bolt.
Next are two ETB 1:1 creature kill in certain circumstances and then flip into good stuff. The Golgari six-drop will destroy a non-Elf with a power equal to or less than your land count for six mana and then flips into a dork equal to your land count in size. The mono-Green one-costs five, will pump your dork permanently with a +1/+1 counter, give you a fight, and then flips into a 4/4 that pumps another dork, but removes abilities so you can remove flying or reach from blockers, pump your non-evasive stuff and loads more!
From targeted removal to mass! The six-drop Black sweeper will sweep either all legendary or nonlegendary ones, whichever is the bigger impact on the board. Then flips to a 3/6 legendary land with menace, deathtouch to swing and remove counters from a permanent like a planeswalker to kill it and acts like the Monarch since if not smashed, you'll draw and lose life. The four-drop Red one shoots all dorks for 3 damage, and then flips into a 4/4 ward life cast spell trigger to Guttersnipe but for all things you cast, not just instants/sorceries or non-critters. Love this sweep duo that you can build around all up and down the block.
Number 5
Top five time! This pair are our highest scoring duo! The X battle will drop a free non-Human to the battlefield from your library or graveyard with the X cost. Free drops are nasty and then it flips into an 8/8 with reach and then gives your non-Humans evasion in the form of direct damage to a foe even if blocked like Thorn Elemental. The Orzhov 5-drop will Zombify a permanent from your graveyard that's not a Battle. Then it flips to a creature token making in your end step 1/1 flying Spirit that's pumped in power by the anthem effect and give them all lifelink. Each of these two will drop a permanent for free, and then flip to support.
Number Four
The 5-drop Mono-Green Battle is an uber Regrowth for three cards that are permanents recurred, not two. Then when flipped you can drop free ones from your hand each of your upkeeps! You can see why every turn is better.
Number 3
Top three time! This Azorius X-cost with two mana to start will ETB with 2/2 vigilance Knights! Then when flipped you make a fun planeswalker with four loyalty that can +1 to draw two and discard two unless you discard a critter. Love that card flow and then you can -2 him twice with his starting loyalty to make an anthem that pumps that type's power by one and ward 1. You can -3 him once to tap your dorks to tuck a foe's nonland thing back with that mana value or less.
Number 2
Our penultimate scoring card is also an uncommon that costs four in Green and then ramps two basic lands tapped like Explosive Vegetation and for that cost. Then it flips fast into a 4/4 vigilance and haste with the ability to swing, and the tap for mana like Birds of Paradise and after it swings, and counts as a land too!
Number 1
This five color five-drop dominated Standard! When it arrives you'll dig until you find two cheap nonlands, cast one for free, draw the other. When flipped? You'll cast a sorcery that lets you draw two more, drop a free artifact, create a copy that's a duplicate token, toss a trio of +1/+1 counters and Vindicate that opposing thang. That's massive value from one effect.
That's it! What did you think of my Top Battles for Commander? What did I miss or get in the wrong order? I hope you enjoyed it!
