World Magic Cup Changes Announced

Reddit

Pro Tour Sunday is not just about crowning a champion, but also about sharing news about upcoming Organized Play changes. Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch was no different as Director of Global Organized Play Helene Bergeot announced sweeping changes to the World Magic Cup.

Day 1 will feature a 7 rounds of Swiss with a cut to 48 teams for pool play on Day 2. There will be 8 pools of 6 teams each. The first three rounds will feature Team Sealed while rounds 4 through 7 will be Team Unified Modern. All rounds on Day 2 and the Top 8 will use this format.

Team Unified Modern will follow the normal Unified Constructed Rules with one important caveat: only one deck can feature any copies of a non-basic land card. Meaning Hallowed Fountain can only appear in one deck, as can Lightning Bolt. It’s all or none.

Day 2 will be broken into two Phases of Modified Double Elimination play. Phase 1 will be four rounds. The top two seeds in each pool will receive a bye while the 3rd seed battles the 6th and the 4th seed fights the 5th. The winners then advance to the next round while the losers are eliminated. From this point on, two wins lets a team move on to the second Phase. Phase 2 will follow the same structure as rounds 2-4 from Phase 1. The Top 8 teams will move on to single elimination on Sunday.

To facilitate these changes, there will be no draws on Day 2 and all rounds will be 60 minutes. Here is how rounds will be determined if time runs out:

  • The team with the most match wins after extra turns wins the match for the round.

In the event of a tied score between teams at 1-1, the deciding match will be determined by game count at the end of extra turns.

  • In the event the deciding match's game count is tied, the player with the highest life total wins the match, which then wins that player's team the match.
  • In the event the team match count, game count, and life totals are tied at the end of extra turns, the first change in life total will result in the player whose life total is higher after said change winning the match for their team.
  • In the event the game count becomes tied in extra turns, and a third game needs to be played, the match will be decided by the first change in life total, with the player whose life total is higher after said change winning the match for their team.
  • World Magic Cup Qualifiers are also undergoing a change. The final Qualifier, scheduled for September 17th and 18th will now be Modern instead of Standard. These tournaments will all be one day instead of two with Last Chance Qualifiers feeding the events on their associated weekends. LCQs will no longer award byes as those will be handed out based on Planeswalker Points. The threshold for byes varies country to country so be sure to check the official announcement for your country’s required points.

The World Magic Cup will take place November 18th-20th in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
