No one will ever look back and call Pro Tour Eldritch Moon uneventful. The final event in the 2015-16 Pro Tour season saw multiple storylines come to a head and did so in explosive fashion.
The Top 8 was stacked with talent. Every player present on Sunday with the exception of Sam Pardee had at least one Pro Tour Top 8 to their credit. Leading the pack in this respect was Luis Scott-Vargas with his third consecutive Top 8, marking his 8th overall. Lukas Blohon, Andrew Brown, Reid Duke, Yuta Takahashi, and Ken Yukuhiro all were making their second Sunday appearance. Finally, there was Owen Turtenwald making his fourth Pro Tour Sunday. On the same weekend he was elected to the Hall of Fame Owen pulled off a major upset by wresting the Player of the Year Title from Seth Manfield. The current World Champion had all but locked up the mantle as it would require a deep run from either Owen or Pro Tour Shadows over Innistrad Champion Steve Rubin to change the outcome. Well Owen made Top 8 and Seth Manfield had a reasonable Day 2. As a result Owen Turtenwald claimed his second Player of the Year Title.
The Quarterfinals saw Luis Scott-Vargas dispatch Reid Duke in three quick games with Bant Company triumphing over Red-Green Delirium Ramp. Owen Turtenwald and his Temur Emerge deck took the match in four games from Yuta Takahashi and Bant Company. On the other side of the bracket Sam Pardee and Black-Green Delirium needed four games to take down Andrew Brown on Temur Emerge. Lukas Blohon found himself in a two game hole with White-Black Control against Ken Yukuhiro’s Red-Green Ramp. Three sideboarded games later and Blohon was on to the Semifinals.
The first half of the Top 4 had Luis Scott-Vargas up against Owen Turtenwald. In a match where they traded the first four matches it was Owen who came out on top in the fifth game and advanced to the finals. Lukas Blohon decided that he had enough of losing and ran over Sam Pardee in three games.
So the finals had Owen Turtenwald with Emrakul, the Promised End up against Lukas Blohon and Liliana, the Last Hope. In a finals befitting the story of Eldritch Moon Lukas Blohon managed to win three straight games, capping off his Top 8 with a 9-0 run. Liliana’s emblem helped him along the way as the Zombies of Blohon overcame the Eldrazi of Turtenwald.
Congratulations to Lukas Blohon, your Pro Tour Eldritch Moon Champion!
