The first weekend of the 2016-17 Pro Tour Season has come and gone. Grand Prix Rimini saw six copies of Bant Company in the Top 8, including a finals mirror match. Grand Prix Portland had three copies make it to the single elimination rounds, including one in the hands of Hall of Famer Paul Rietzl, but none made it past the semifinals.
Instead the last match pitted Robert Santana with Jund Delirium against Travis Woo on an updated version of the White-Black Control that won Pro Tour Eldritch Moon. Game one went to Santana in comeback fashion after dropping to two life from Woo's Planeswalker fueled assault but Emrakul, the Promised End came to Robert's rescue. Game two saw a similar state with Woo's taking the early advantage but once again Emrakul appeared and the game ended shortly thereafter.
Congratulations to Robert Santana, your Grand Prix Portland champion!

Perhaps more intriguing than the finals was the deck that went into the Top 8 as the number one overall seed. Chris Botelho took a Harmless Offering-Demonic Pact deck all the way to the top of the standings. While he was eliminated in the quarterfinals his effort earned him a spot at the Pro Tour and a place in the hearts of rogue deck builders everywhere.
