Today we wrap it all up with what the set is about, the multicolored cards. It's going to be a lot of cards to get ready, but first, how I will be rating the cards.
I will not be going over cards that I believe will not see play in Standard and I will not be going over the Commander cards that will not see Standard play. For example, cards like Angelic Observer and Ballroom Brawlers will be omitted since they are just Limited cards and saying, "This is just a Limited card" repeatedly gets old rather fast. Do not worry though, I will be covering all the rare and mythic cards in the actual Streets of New Capenna. So, if you like a certain rare or mythic, it will be mentioned in the review.
Keep in mind I'm rating all these cards for Standard playability. I will mention Modern applications if I believe the card has some.
Each card will be listed by color, then alphabetically by name.
Each card will be given a rating of 1-5. If a card would receive a 0, meaning it will see no play in that format ever, its rating is left off the list.
Rating | Explanation | Standard Examples
0 - Will never see play in this format (0 ratings are not listed).
1 - Unlikely to see play. (Divine Gambit)
2 - Could see fringe play, or occasional sideboard card. (Disdainful Stroke, Annul, Candletrap, Shadows' Verdict)
3 - Commonly played, staple in a single deck, or frequent play in several decks. (Righteous Valkyrie, Behold the Multiverse, Farewell)
4 - Format staples. Sees play in multiple decks, one of the best cards in the format. (Esika's Chariot, Elite Spellbinder, The Wandering Emperor)
5 - Format warping. If you are in these colors, you play that card or keep that card in mind when building decks. (Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Hullbreaker Horror)
Now that we have that out of the way, let's begin!
Multicolor
Aven Heartstabber - 3 - I'm a fan of Aven Heartstabber, probably as close as we will get to Baleful Strix in Standard. A 3/3 flying deathtoucher for two mid to late game that still mils and draws a card is perfectly reasonable.
Black Market Tycoon - 3 - Mana dork for 2 mana has been a staple in Standard and this one does that but there are so many ways to use Treasures too. It can also get you to 6 mana on turn four if you sit on the treasure.
Brokers Ascendancy - 2 - So, you get to proliferate basically at the end of your turns. Feels like this is way too slow but still a cool card.
Brokers Charm - 3 - Any charm that has "draw two cards" and two other modes is going to be playable because it is never a dead card. There also happens to be a ton of enchantments being played right now so charm is great.
Cabaretti Ascendancy - 2 - Another way to draw cards extremely slowly at your end step. No thank you, again, very slow.
Cabaretti Charm - 2 - I feel like the modes on these are way too mediocre and this one will not make the cut for Standard.
Cormela, Glamour Thief - 3 - I just really like ramp in non-ramp colors. Especially ramp that when it dies you get to Regrow an Instant or Sorcery from your graveyard.
Corpse Appraiser - 3.5 - Graveyard hate and card advantage wrapped into one card! This will compete with Graveyard Trespasser // Graveyard Glutton but in some situations Corpse Appraiser is better.
Corpse Explosion - 3 - A Rakdos Draconic Intervention but you must exile a creature. I can get behind this mostly because it hits planeswalkers too.
Endless Detour - 4 - One thing that is bad about counterspells is that if you draw them too late, they do not do much. I love that this is a great answer card too.
Evelyn, the Covetous - 3 - I've always loved Gonti, Lord of Luxury and Evelyn reminds me of Gonti. You won't see three cards but you can play lands and you'll get two cards.
Exotic Pets - 2 - What a strange card, making two unblockable 1/1s is all right but not amazing for 3 mana. I just think the card is sweet!
Falco Spara, Pactweaver - 2.5 - I don't like that this gets hit by Skyclave Apparition and that the Shield token does not protect this demon at all. You need more out of your 4-drop in Standard but definitely a cool commander!
Fatal Grudge - 2 - A different Edict where you can kind of control what the opponent sacrifice. I really like it because you draw a card and you have a very cheap Planeswalker in Rakdos colors in Ob Nixilis.
Fleetfoot Dancer - 2.5 - These cards really want flying like Mantis Rider or Lightning Angel. That being said a Ulvenwald Oddity // Ulvenwald Behemoth sees play and this one also gives lifelink to help race.
Hostile Takeover - 2.5 - A five-mana wrath that does not kill everything on your opponent's side of the board? No thank you, especially since it does not hit planeswalkers either.
Incandescent Aria - 2 - I can see this one for the sideboard, especially in token decks but being three colors makes it not so easily accessible.
Jetmir, Nexus of Revels - 3 - Great token lord! Naya tokens with Wedding Announcement // Wedding Festivity? Let's do it and throw in The Wandering Emperor as well!
Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second - 3.5 - Turn your treasures into tokens? Yes please, amazing token creature since we have so many ways to make treasures.
Lagrella, the Magpie - 3 - Wordy card but a sweet take on the Fiend Hunter ability. I like that she grows your own things when they come back.
Lord Xander, the Collector - 2.5 - A grixis card that does everything and somehow nothing. A perfect embodiment of Grixis. I know it works with Sorin on turn three in older formats but for Standard I am not sure why would want to play this or reanimate it over Koma, Hullbreaker, or Jin-Gitaxis.
Maestros Ascendancy - 3 - Giving all your spells flashback is super cool, especially since you can cast countermagic on your opponent's turn too. It's like a Grixis enchantment version of Lier, Disciple of the Drowned.
Maestros Charm - 3 - Does not draw two cards but it does dig deep and fuel your graveyard while also being a decent removal spell. I'll take it!
Maestros Diabolist - 3 - This does play well with Maestros Ascendancy, so maybe we can build a deck around these cards alongside Fable of the Mirror-Breaker // Reflection of Kiki-Jiki. I believe.
Meeting of the Five - 1.5 - I mean I love me some five color Magic but I have no clue why this has restrictions on what you can cast for an 8 mana sorcery? Put a restriction on Kor Spirit Dancer, Kami of Transience, Goldspan Dragon, Lier, or any other absurd creature. Not my eight-mana sorcery... Thank you!
Mr. Orfeo, the Boulder - 2.5 - A creature with a similar effect as Unnatural Growth. I'm not huge on it but it does play extremely well with other Green trample creatures.
Ob Nixilis, the Adversary - 5 - This card seems absurd to me. It looks like it is a card from Modern Masters 3 as it is in a league of its own compared to everything else. turn three two planeswalkers, and turn two in some formats? Like wow! Your opponent is not going to be able to afford to discard cards that early and this is can be an eight-point life swing if you control a devil or demon. Absurd!
Obscura Ascendancy - 2 - Cool card to build around and you do not need any spirits to make it good since it just spits them out and then turns them into a house. It takes a while to turn on but if you have the Ascendancy early and you can turn it on, it'll be lights out.
Obscura Charm - 2.5 - I'm honestly not that high on Obscura Charm. This card is terrible value for its mana cost if your deck does not use the reanimate a multicolored permanent.
Obscura Interceptor - 4 - Venser, Shaper Savant just for spells is still amazing, especially since this one has lifelink to boot and it loots! It can also act as a four-mana Lightning Helix on a creature which is not terrible.
Ognis, the Dragon's Lash - 2 - 4 mana for a 3/3 is not good, even if it has haste and makes a tapped treasure token.
Park Heights Pegasus - 2.5 - In a world of Eyetwitch and Shambling Ghast, it is not looking good for our horsey boy. Sorry Pegasus, you're going to must wait.
Queza, Augur of Agonies - 2 - I love this card just because it is a combo with Lich's Mastery by itself if you have cards in your library. It does also make Cut of the Profits turn into Mind Spring but that's not good enough.
Raffine, Scheming Seer - 2.5 - Another looter but I don't see why you would play this before playing Four Kaito Shizuki. Do you even want one of these after you have Four Kaitos? I don't think so.
Rigo, Streetwise Mentor - 2 - Welcoming Vampire is better here and the 3-drop slot is already pretty full with other white creatures.
Riveteers Ascendancy - 4 - It is a solid Sacrifice outlet that also play very well with Jund's Blitz mechanic and Ziatora, unlike the other Ascendancies.
Riveteers Charm - 2.5 - Soul Shatter with upside, I will take it! Jund hit it well with their Charm and their Ascendancy.
Rocco, Cabaretti Caterer - 3.5 - Chord of Calling but on a body! Seems awesome, I love toolbox decks and love this card!
Scheming Fence - 2 - Not a fan of this different Meddling Mage, mostly because if you try to lockdown a planeswalker, the planeswalker has already used an ability, you won't be able to stop it preemptively.
Soul of Emancipation - 2.5 - This Avatar is no Terastodon. I don't mind that it can't hit lands but giving your opponent 3/3 fliers and Soul of Emancipation also not having flying itself means you give your opponent's real threats. You'll want to blow your own things up with this, preferably with shields or that are tokens.
Stimulus Package - 2.5 - A four-mana ramp spell for two but you can also turn your treasures into 1/1 tokens at instant speed, I like it! Something to do if you are not ramping. Wonder if we have enough treasure creating cards to really make it work, time will tell!
Tainted Indulgence - 3.5 - Chart a Course was totally fine and saw play, so will Tainted Indulgence!
Toluz, Clever Conductor - 3 - This is a sweet one. It's like Bag of Holding but a lot better since you do not have to pay mana or sacrifice to get the cards back. It also avoids Vanishing Verse, which makes it playable.
Unleash the Inferno - 2 - In theory this is great against Oni-Cult Anvil, except you can just sacrifice the creature in response to counter the entire spell. Seven damage on a single target will be rough with Shield as a mechanic too.
Void Rend - 4 - 3 mana uncounterable and instant speed Vindicate that does not hit lands? Yes please! Excellent card and really pushes the Esper archetype.
Ziatora, the Incinerator - 2 - Awesome commander that you can try for Jund sacrifice and you'll still be too good. In Standard too much mana and does not do enough right away.
Ziatora's Envoy - 4 - YES! This is an excellent card and one of the best Blitz cards on an empty board. I am a fan of Jund in new Standard. |
Top 5 Multicolored Cards
So many great cards here! This is clearly a multicolored set and it will shape Standard as it heavily encourages you to play three color decks since some of these cards are very powerful when you are able to cast them. Thankfully, we have the trilands!
Well, that wraps it up for this set review. I hope you've enjoyed it, the next one will be huge as it also includes a rotation!
As always, thanks for reading,
