Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Standard Set Review - Red and Artifacts

Reddit

We went over the Black and Multicolored cards of Innistrad: Midnight Hunt yesterday, make sure to check that out. Today we dive into the Red and Artifacts cards, before we start, let us go over how I will be rating them.

I will not be going over cards that I believe will not see play in Standard and I will not be going over the Commander cards that will not see Standard play. For example, cards like Clarion Cathars and Stormrider Spirit will be omitted since they are just Limited cards and saying, "This is just a Limited card" repeatedly gets old rather fast. Do not worry though, I will be covering all the rare and mythic cards in the actual Innistrad: Midnight Hunt set. So, if you like a certain rare or mythic, it will be mentioned in the review.

Keep in mind I am rating all these cards for Standard playability. I will mention Modern applications if I believe the card has some.

Each card will be listed by color, then alphabetically by name.

Each card will be given a rating of 1-5. If a card would receive a 0, meaning it will see no play in that format ever, its rating is left off the list.

Rating | Explanation | Standard Examples

0 - Will never see play in this format (0 ratings are not listed).

1 - Unlikely to see play. (Divine Gambit)

2 - Could see fringe play, or occasional sideboard card. (Disdainful Stroke, Annul, Candletrap, Devastating Mastery)

3 - Commonly played, staple in a single deck, or frequent play in several decks. (Righteous Valkyrie, Behold the Multiverse, Check for Traps)

4 - Format staples. Sees play in multiple decks, one of the best cards in the format. (Saw it Coming, Fateful Absence, Werewolf Pack Leader)

5 - Format warping. If you are in these colors, you play that card or keep that card in mind when building decks. (Goldspan Dragon, Alrund's Epiphany, Esika's Chariot)

Now that we have that out of the way, let us begin!

Red and Artifacts

Bloodthirsty Adversary
Bloodthirsty Adversary - 3.5 - My favorite Adversary of the cycle, it reminds me of Goblin Dark-Dwellers but better. It also fits aggressive decks well and having haste makes it an excellent finisher.
Burn Down the House
Burn Down the House - 3 - Hour of Devastation is back and this time you can main deck it a lot easier because of the devil mode. A welcome addition for midrange or Red based control decks!
Cathartic Pyre
Cathartic Pyre - 3.5 - Pyre is an another excellent "Choose one" card. Being removal for a creature or planeswalker and is filtering mid to late game? Sign me up! Love cards like this that give you decision trees.
Curse of Shaken Faith
Curse of Shaken Faith - 2 - Great Sideboard card for Magecraft decks or heavy non-creature spell decks!
Falkenrath Pit Fighter
Falkenrath Pit Fighter - 3 - If Vampires is good enough, Pit Fighter will always be a full playset in the vampire deck. Just a solid aggressive 1-drop creature!
Geistflame Reservoir
Geistflame Reservoir - 2 - Smoldering Egg // Ashmouth Dragon, Delver of Secrets // Insectile Aberration, and Poppet Stitcher // Poppet Factory are better payoffs for your instant and sorcery deck. This one costs a little too much and the fact you need more mana to use it makes it rough.
Light Up the Night
Light Up the Night - 2.5 - Important to note that Light Up hits creatures and planeswalkers for one more point of damage making it easier to kill them with less mana. That's huge. A different Devil's Play with a harsher flashback, seems all right but nothing crazy.
Moonveil Regent
Moonveil Regent - 4 - Moonveil Regent might take a while to find a home but when it does... Oh baby! He is just an Experimental Frenzy on legs without the drawbacks. Extremely powerful card!
Play with Fire
Play with Fire - 3 - Stritcly better Shock will see a ton of play in Standard just like Shock did before it. The Scry 1 is nice for Delver of Secrets Decks!
Reckless Stormseeker // Storm-Charged Slasher
Reckless Stormseeker // Storm-Charged Slasher - 4.5 - This card is bonkers! It's not only great in a werewolf deck but any aggressive deck. It has haste, gives other creatures haste, is huge, and when it transforms you get haste and trample? Jeeezzz, card is absurd!
Smoldering Egg // Ashmouth Dragon
Smoldering Egg // Ashmout Dragon - 4 - An eggcellent build around card. I love Thing in the Egg and just like Thing in the Ice, this one will see plenty of play. It is a solid way to block same damage early then kill your opponent or all their creatures later. It also auto flips with an Alrund's Epiphany or Flashbacked Memory Deluge.
Sunstreak Phoenix
Sunstreak Phoenix - 2 - No haste makes me not a huge fan of this card, especially for 4 mana. Can I sell you on Reckless Stormseeker instead?
Thermo-Alchemist
Thermo-Alchemist - 3 - A reprint of Thermo-Alchemist! It is always fine in an aggressive spells deck, maybe alongside Delver of Secrets or Smoldering Egg.
The Celestus
The Celestus - 3.5 - Extremely underrated card. This is the best three-mana artifact we have had since Coalition Relic? The Celestus fixes mana, gains life, controls night and day, and gains you a little bit of life for just playing the game. Love this in midrange and especially control decks!
Pithing Needle
Pithing Needle - 2.5 - Needle is always a fine sideboard card. I'm little more skeptical because Prismari Command is good, but against non Prismari decks it is a solid answer to planeswalkers or creature lands at the very least.

Top 5 Red Cards

  1. Reckless Stormseeker // Storm-Charged Slasher
  2. Moonveil Regent
  3. Smoldering Egg // Ashmouth Dragon
  4. Bloodthirsty Adversary
  5. Cathartic Pyre

Red has a lot of solid cards coming in from Innistrad: Midnight Hunt! A good mix of control cards and aggressive cards, my favorites being Smoldering Egg // Ashmouth Dragon and Bloodthirsty Adversary. Love the design on Adversary and how it can be a great aggressive card, spells.dek card, or even a control card! Super cool!
