Magic is growing. Rapidly. Tournament attendance records continue to be shattered as more and more players start slinging spells and turning cardboard sideways.
In the past year, we joined Chandra on a quest, we watched Jace and Vraska battle on the plane of Ravnica, and we experienced the epic tale of Theros block. We celebrated twenty years of Magic, we were offered the chance to draft the Power Nine, and we took part in a Conspiracy. We cut down both a hydra and a horde of bloodthirsty minotaurs; hell, we even forged a godslaying weapon and committed deicide.
As we get ready to leave Theros and planeswalk to Tarkir, we will participate in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the multiverse’s greatest hunter.
The Magic conversation has been growing as well. Between Twitter, Facebook, reddit, Tumblr, the mothership, and countless Magic-related sites, our community has developed a voice all its own.
Of all the accomplishments we have completed as a community, there still exists one thing that has eluded us—one thing that we have yet to do together:
Create our own plane.
Over the next several months—maybe even year (I have no idea how long this will take)—I would like to facilitate (through articles and social media) the construction of a plane in the multiverse created by our Magic community.
When Magic prepares to visit a yet-unseen plane in the ever-expanding Multiverse, the creative team crafts a style guide that both visually and literally tells the story of that plane. We as players are able to see a small portion of these guides in the Planeswalker’s Guide to PLANENAMEHERE articles put out on the mothership. The style guides serve as windows into another world—a reference to artists, flavor writers, and sometimes even designers in order to create a cohesive plane alive with entire civilizations and cultures awaiting us to discover them.
My end goal for this project is to put together a finalized PDF—a style guide, if you will—of our own that we create for our plane. The following is just a small list of some of the many things I hope to accomplish with the Magic community in order to fully flesh out the style guide for our plane:
- Create a unique plane in the Multiverse with an interesting internal conflict
- Example: An Egyptian-themed plane on which the dead just will not stay dead, but return to the world as corrupted shadow spirits
- Decide what creatures should be found on this plane in each color
- Example: For white, what is the small humanoid race of this plane? Is there more than one that falls into white? What types of small, white creatures exist? Small flyers? Are there angels? If not, what is the white iconic creature type for this plane?
- Write short stories and descriptions of cultures and people and creatures and artifacts and magics all found on the plane, creating unique and interesting lore specific to our world, written by members of the community
- Concept art for what the different creatures—and people and locations—in our world look like, drawn by members of the community
- Come up with unique names for creatures and places and people, named by members of the community
- Name our plane and create a unique set symbol that represents it, named and designed by members of the community
- Create and name a unique Planeswalker personality who is from our plane
What will really make this something special would be the fact that the plane was created by the community. This would be our plane—our homeworld. Please vote below, and let me know if you are interested in participating in this project. If the response is positive, I will kick off the first step in designing our plane with another article.

Our community is filled with multiple talented individuals. If you have ever wanted to write about Magic or create concept or card art for Magic, or if you’ve wanted to experience creative world-building, this is a great opportunity to get yourself out there and show off your skills to the rest of the community!
If you are as excited about this idea as I am, please help me get the word out. Tell your friends, tell the community, and get everyone you can involved. Tweet about your interest using the hashtag #GMWMTP (Gathering Magic: We Make the Plane).
If you have any questions or suggestions for me, or if you would like to discuss this idea further, please do not hesitate to send me an e-mail (ANThroplasm909 at gmail dot com) or shoot me a tweet @ANThroplasm.
I look forward to working with all of you!
