Commander Spotlight: General Ferrous Rokiric

Reddit

For the Legion. United we stand. Lead the charge.

If you're looking for a Boros list for your next Commander night that's easy to pick up, focused on teamwork, and doesn't lean on Equipment or the infamous Winota, Joiner of Forces, this could be your moment. Modern Horizon 2's General Ferrous Rokiric is here to show you that the strength of Boros lies not in fancy tricks or convoluted infinite combos but in the relentless march of a unified Golem army.

So, without further ado, join me in today's Commander Spotlight Segment as we gear up, rally our mechanized forces, and lead the charge toward inevitable victory through good old-fashioned combat.

The Legion awaits your command.

Why March with General Ferrous Rokiric in Commander?

General Ferrous Rokiric

When you command General Ferrous Rokiric, you're embracing the true essence of Boros: unity, strength, and relentless teamwork. His ability to create 4/4 Boros-colored Golem tokens (the color identity of these Golems matters, by the way) every time you cast a multicolored spell makes him a natural leader for a strategy built on synergy and unyielding momentum.

What Makes the Legion Strong

Simple and Direct: This list is perfect for anyone who loves short, decisive turns without ever having to agonize over complex decision trees. There's no sequencing needed here. Regardless of what spell you're casting, you're getting a 4/4 Golem, and I think that's just wonderful.

Budget-Friendly: The list (less than $100 at this time of writing) is relatively effective in its gameplay without needing expensive upgrades--perfect for a casual to even mid-power table.

Token Power: Few token commanders can generate a token army as efficiently as General Ferrous Rokiric. By this, I do mean tokens as big as the Golems the General generates (we're not here to make 1/1 squirrels to chump block Emrakuls, Chatterfang, okay?)

Pseudo-Hexproof: If the General isn't countered, he's so hard to remove. Think about all the efficient removal spells that are popular in Commander right now. Now, how many are not monocolored? Yeah, I couldn't think of many, either. So, this means once we stick the General on the board, all we have to do is cross our fingers and dodge sweepers. But it's not like anyone plays sweepers this day, right? We're here to have fun, after all. RIGHT?

What Can Hold the Legion Back

  • Commander-Dependent: General Ferrous Rokiric is the heart of the deck. Without him on the field, the Boros cards we somewhat forced into the list quickly drop in quality (e.g., outside of this specific list, would we ever want to pay an extra mana for Sacred Fire to gain two life from what would otherwise be a Shock if it didn't make a 4/4 Golem when we did it?)
  • Predictable Gameplan: Our plan is for everyone at the table to see: go face. This means that our cards are always face-up. We play cards that either make Golems or make our board (of primarily Golems) bigger. So, if someone thought it'd be a good idea to play their Turbo Yuriko deck in this pod, expect no help from us.
  • Card Draw: I know it, and you know it. Red and White have always faltered when it comes to card draw in MTG. We have to really work at it to keep the pedal to the metal. And while I have put in as much card draw as I could without hindering the list's performance, don't expect to out-attrition any Blue/Black deck (trust me, I have tried, and it never turns out well).

General Ferrous Rokiric's March: How to Play

As I briefly touched on earlier, playing this list is really as straightforward as it gets: get General Ferrous Rokiric on the field, generate a token army of 4/4 Golems, and go wide.

  1. Establish Your Leader: Get General Ferrous Rokiric into battle as soon as possible, but only when you can cast a multicolored spell on your next turn. On the off chance you have one of the two 1-drop creatures in hand (Boros Recruit or Duergar Assailant), there is some merit in waiting till you can cast both the General and the 1-drop to establish your board more effectively.
  2. Rally the Troops: Cast your multicolored spells. Cast them all! With a whopping 47 in the list, you'll rarely run out of ways to create Golems. The two multicolored spells that are especially worth noting are the aforementioned Sacred Fire and Angelfire Ignition since they have Flashback, allowing you to effectively make 4 Golems over the course of the game.
  3. Strengthen the Formation: Enhance your damage output with cards like Legion's Initiative, Rising of the Day, and Shared Animosity.
  4. Lead the Charge: Attack. A big blocker's in your way? Bet they haven't seen Draft all-star Ride Down in a minute. Everyone's got a big blocker? Have they read Olorin's Searing Light (I know I hadn't before I built this list)? Want to kill everyone all on the same turn after clearing away their chump blockers? It turns out the Resurgence side of Response // Resurgence can actually win games pretty often.

Inspiring the Troops: Notable Interactions

Winota, Joiner of Forces

Leadership is about turning every situation into an opportunity. Here are just a few key interactions that will show your opponents that Boros is certainly not the worst color pairing in MTG:

  • Winota, Joiner of Forces: Yes, this list still does include Winota, but we're not outright relying on her to win us the game. While I was building out this list, I just happened to notice that we played a pretty good amount of humans, a whopping 17, in fact (just roughly five less from typical cEDH Winota lists!) And with all our golems coming in with their hard-to-block stat lines, we just slam Winota at the right time, and it's value city.
  • Rem Karolus, Stalwart Slayer or Tajic, Legion's Edge + Deafening Clarion or Blasphemous Act: One-sided board wipes are good. As an additional bonus, Winota can find both Rem and Stalwart, as they are both humans.

Card Draw

Like I said, we have to really work for some good card draw:

Skullclamp
Idol of Oblivion
Aurelia, the Law Above
