It's rare that I get to combine two decks I really like and do so in one of my favorite wedge combinations to boot; so, when that happens, I take advantage. Specifically, a card has been previewed in Core Set 2020 that has me very excited. It does all of the Temur things and does them so well that I think I'm going to take two decks entirely apart and I'm not even upset about it. In fact, I am excited because if we leverage this new commander properly, the amalgamated deck should be better than the sum of its parts. Kids who grew up in the 90s know what that's like.

I don't want to talk too much more before I introduce the card I plan to use to unite these two decks. The title is a clue, the article description probably gave it away and you can see what it is in your peripheral vision but I'm still going to follow the rules of good storytelling and introduce it now. Readers, meet my favorite card from Core Set 2020.

Omnath, Locus of the Roil

If we take this new card and what it means to its natural conclusion, it's fair to assume in 5 years we'll get an Omnath that is wurg or ubrg and I'm excited about that prospect, and the inevitable 5-color Omnath 5 years after that which I assume will be what all other Magic cards are in 2029 - a digital download for the Magic smartwatch game that comes free when you buy a Yellies doll.

Whether or not Magic is still around in its current form in 10 years aside, I plan to still be playing this deck in ten years because it combines all of the things I like about Simic and Gruul and brings back fond memories of building the second Omnath deck I ever built.

The deck wasn't perfect (I included Temple of the False God because that was in fashion at the time, for example) but it was fun. I especially liked my decision to include Elemental Mastery, a card that won me a lot of games in Limited (Grief Tyrant and Fate Transfer played roles). It's possible that the card could reappear in the new list, especially since we will have a few elementals whose power and toughness scale - a deck where we're putting lands into play as fast as possible seems saucy with Zendikar Incarnate and Rubblehulk.

The other deck I am looking at trying to mash into the mix is a deck that's a little too good and which I basically scrapped. I kept tweaking my Tatyova deck until it took 5 minute turns and always seemed to win with Psychosis Crawler. If I had stuck to the 75% build from my article, I might still have it around but since we're going to put it through a woodchipper anyway, we might as well see if we can salvage some mulch or pieces of Steve Buscemi or whatever comes out of a woodchipper.

Now when I say I am combining lists, I mean just that. I am going to include some new cards because must-includes for both decks have been printed since I registered either list and there are some cards that synergize well with our commander. However, I am going to insist that at least 75% of the final deck be cards that are from either list. It's not an easy task but I actually don't think it limits my cardpool too much. I have a Simic landfall deck and a Gruul Elementals deck - almost everything I need should be in one place or another. Besides, the deck will be mostly Green and the decks have that color in common. This should be a piece of cake. Let's see how I do, shall we?

Roil Rage | Commander | Jason Alt

This looks like a lot of fun, actually! Way more than 75% of this deck was in either one of the previous lists, also, and I think that shows what a good card Omnath is, reconciling two decks like this. If I hadn't put that restriction on myself, the deck I ended up with would have been very, very similar. It does what I want to be doing.

I added ways to blink Omnath to make sure we can get a lot of triggers. If we can get 4 or 5 elementals in play, something that's fairly trivial with so many ways to draw cards and so many ways to get a huge creature to slap Elemental Mastery onto, you should be doming targets fairly regularly. We have Temur Sabertooth and Deadeye Navigator and you can add more shenanigans if you want. Being able to draw on landfall triggers is very good and your hand should always have gas, even if it's not the exact cards you want.

If you want to focus more on Omnath's first ability, take a look at my Locus of Rage deck and steer the deck a bit that way. You can cut some of the bounce shenanigans and focus more on making elementals. Add Living Twister, Wrenn and Six, Rhythm of the Wild, and Temur Ascendancy and really lean into making elementals happen. Flamekin Harbinger can find the elementals you want and you can even tutor for Locus of Rage with it to make sure you get a ton of 5/5 creatures. The Blue can help smooth things out and keep your hand full.

If you want to focus more on Omnath's second ability, look at my Tatyova list. I cut Retreat to Coralhelm late but you can add that back in and more cards similar to Sakura-Tribe Scout that tap to put a land into play. You can keep dumping your hand of lands with this interaction, which can quickly turn into a very explosive turn with Tatyova, Horn of Greed and Omnath able to keep your hand stocked. Add cards like Trade Routes and maybe Meloku, the Clouded Mirror to keep the lands from your board in play without having to sacrifice them.

I think this hybrid build is a great start. I don't know exactly which way I will lean, but I do know that having Blue to blink Omnath and draw more cards gives the deck a lot of flexibility and it lets me play a lot of my favorite cards.

So what did I cut or leave out that you would have included? Is Omnath the Omnath of your dreams? Do I need more mana sinks or ways to move lands between my hand, in play and the graveyard? Did you include the Sunder I included when I built the Tatyova deck and have a non-75% experience casting it? I want to know this stuff - hit me up in the comments section. Until next time!
