I know I said I was going to take this article series one set at a time but I had what I thought was a good idea and ran with it a little. This week we're not talking about a specific set because what's more important than the set in this context is the plane. Dominaria was a plane where a lot of early Magic sets were based. As such, a lot of cards from these sets have names that specifically refer to the plane itself. Sometimes it's characters on the plane and other times it is landmarks or events that happened there. I wanted to do a "Don't Forget Me: Dominaria" to talk about some of the cards that are difficult to reprint because they can't be reprinted in a set not taking place on Dominaria.
The painlands, as they're colloquially known, are a part of a cycle that is exclusive to Dominaria. The five allied lands are originally from Ice Age. Although the entire cycle is not tied to the plane (only Adarkar Wastes and Karplusan Forest refer to Dominarian specific geography), most of the ones from Apocalypse (Yavimaya Coast, Shivan Reef, Caves of Koilos, Llanowar Wastes, and Battlefield Forge) do. It'd be very difficult to only reprint a few and not all of them. Recently the painlands have had some resurgence in Modern much like the talismans due to their ability to produce colored and colorless mana to cast the Oath of the Gatewatch Eldrazi. These lands were often included in enormous core sets (most of which were white bordered) so the supply of reasonably priced ones is pretty low. If they are to get reprinted they could serve as a pretty good budget land for Commander players as well as relieving some of the price of an otherwise pretty inexpensive Modern deck.
This rare has only been printed once in paper and only in a pretty old set. Flagstones of Trokair is the ruins of an Icatian city on the continent of Sarpadia, according to this. It's pretty unique effect and the fact that it is legendary suggests it's a pretty hard card to just slot into a set. This card has a retail price of over $20 and is usually used as a glorified plains that isn't really negatively affected by the legend rule. Its uses are small and niche and any reprint will likely make its price crash.
While I was looking for cards to include in this series I tried really hard not to pick just a lot of lands. Lands are the most common cards in older sets that referred to the places on the plane. I settled on Chainer's Edict as the lone non-land inclusion because, unlike most character specific spells, Chainer is dead and can't perform this spell somewhere else. It's a $10 uncommon from Torment that continues to torment the wallets of pauper players because it was printed as a common on Magic Online but not in paper. There is no shortage of flashback spells that people want reprinted (I'm sure you are all thinking Snapcaster Mage) so this should be a pretty easy card to include in a new Masters set in the future.
Another highlight from the Torment set is Cabal Coffers. If you've been keeping up with the Dominaria storyline you will know that the Cabal is an evil organization trying to take over Dominaria right now. They printed Cabal Stronghold in the newest set that is homage to Cabal Coffers. While it's clear that Wizards hasn't forgot this card, they have forgotten to reprint it! It's a Commander staple with only 1 set printing (it was in Planechase and was an FNM promo) it's increasingly difficult to find and extra pricey at $30. If you're wondering why, take a look at the synergy this has with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. While I think this card will likely remain over $10 if it does get reprinted, I wouldn't be surprised if it was reprinted as a rare to save some of the reprint equity.
Yeah so this card is in all sorts of weird places. First of all, it has transmute which was an ability that was previewed in Future Sight but was "first printed" on cards in Ravnica: City of Guilds. That means a lot of the cards that have transmute are actually Ravnican specific Dimir cards and not Dominarian cards. The second problem this card has is that it costs zero and there are a lot of really good zero mana spells you'd like to transmute this into. It's a mainstay in the Modern Primeval Titan Amulet of Vigor deck because it can be transmuted into a Summoner's Pact and it can be returned to your hand with a Simic Growth Chamber. Overall I don't expect this $9 uncommon to get reprinted soon but if there is a place they can slide it into it would be a big help. Right now it's price is predicated almost entirely on its rarity so it will likely become a $2-3 card after a similar rarity reprint.
Yeah this is a land, right? Okay I might have mislead you a little but this spell is a casual $5 common from Time Spiral because of the renewed popularity of pauper and Ponza (or land destruction) in Modern. Contrary to what you may think, Mwonvuli is actually a jungle in Jamuraa (a continent on Dominaria). That makes this silly land destruction spell very difficult to reprint. A quick reprint at common can bring this back down to the bargain basement price of sub $1 and make everyone happy again.
I hope you enjoyed this thematic "Don't Forget Me" and don't worry next week I will go back to specific sets as there are a ton of cards that really need some love. If you enjoyed this or didn't please leave a comment below and let me know! I'm always reading your feedback and I'd like to write more about what you'd like to read.
