Standard's New Broken Combo Deck

Reddit

What if I told you Standard had a new combo deck?

One that could put 20+ power onto the battlefield on turn four?

Now what if I told you it was a one card combo?

Now what if I told you that you would always have access to this card every game?

Now what if I told you that you got to start each game with an extra card in hand?

Oh and they can't Thought Erasure it either.

Interested?

Gyruda, Doom of Depths
Spark Double

Well you're in luck, Gyruda, Doom of Depths is here and oh boy do we have a live one.

The basics of the combo are simple: Cast Gyruda. You mill over four cards, and if there is a Spark Double, a Thassa, Deep-Dwelling, a Charming Prince, or another Gyruda in the top four cards, great! You get to do it again! Keep going until you've got a bunch of power in play, then feel free to do it again next turn until your opponent is dead. And I guess if you hit Dream Trawler or Elite Guardmage it ain't bad either.

Growth Spiral
Paradise Druid
Umori, the Collector

Of course the deck-building restriction is that you can only play cards with even mana costs. But considering you'd like to go 2 to 4 to 6 on your mana curve with ramp like Growth Spiral and Paradise Druid, that's really not that bad.

Time Stamps:

Match 4 - 01:00:55

Match 5 - 01:17:48

Wozers!

Destiny Spinner

It's important to note this video was filmed Thursday Night, and a lot changes in a new format in four days. The Gyruda decks are adapting, and the format's decks are adapting to Gyruda as well. Counterspells or killing you are the only real recourse, which makes Destiny Spinner a particularly brilliant piece of sideboard tech.

The Bant Gyruda deck doesn't interact with the board super well so I have been experimenting with a Sultai version as well that has better game against faster decks. Bonus decklist!

These early builds will need to evolve, but there's no doubt that Gyruda has a serious place in tournament Magic. Don't even get me started on Legacy where you get to fire off two Lion's Eye Diamonds for a turn one Gyruda!
