When Ikoria's Companion mechanic got nerfed, it basically spelled doom for all of the non-Lurrus of the Dream-Den/Yorion, Sky Nomad companions. Sure, you may see a stray Jegantha, the Wellspring here or there, but for the most part the power level of the cards was strongly tied up in them being a "free" 8th card. Once the three-mana tax was implemented, only Lurrus and Yorion were strong enough to still be worth building around.
However, there's one companion who knows a lot about doom.

What a riot!
Okay, having now played a league with Megalov's deck, which did 5-0 a league to get published, I can't say it would be my first choice for a Pro Tour. But as far as fun factor goes, Gyruda certainly delivers. There's no doubt that Primeval Titan and Field of the Dead are very real cards in Modern, which the results of this league certainly showed, and this deck can tussle with fair decks no problem. Unfair decks are a bit more of a problem, but there's a certain pleasure in playing a ramp deck and knowing you always have a payoff waiting in the wings that can't be hit by Thoughtseize.
If you love lots of mana and flipping cards off the top of your deck, maybe releasing the Kraken isn't so bad after all!
