There's something about decks that play all five colors of mana. Whether it is just having access to all the game has to offer or the pleasure of seeing it all come together, playing five colors is just great. And it's even better when you have a good reason too.
Niv-Mizzet Reborn is that reason, and MPL member Ken Yukuhiro brought a wild looking five color deck based around Niv-Mizzet to Mythic Championship VII last weekend to face the toughest competition the game has to offer. While he would fall a little short of day two at a 3-4 record, there's no doubt that his finish proves that his deck is competitive in the format, as well as being a total blast to play.
Plus who doesn't love putting more lands into play, drawing more cards, and playing things for free?

While we struggled a bit with dedicated countermagic, the deck was an extremely powerful blast.
Resolving Niv-Mizzet Reborn creates such a huge amount of card advantage and board presence that the full four feels mandatory, while huge effects like Casualties of War and Hydroid Krasis always had a major impact on the game. Teferi, Time Raveler fit in perfectly as an early stepping stone to our midgame that also helped us against counterspells and it was great to see that the deck performed both with and without a Fires of Invention in play.
Moving forward I would like to see a little more to help combat counterspells to assist Shifting Ceratops, making the third and four copies of Hydroid Krasis feel like a no brainer. With the dominance once again of green decks and Nissa, Who Shakes the World in particular, some copies of Noxious Grasp could also be on the menu as well.
But as it stands, if you're looking for a wildly entertaining but also powerful deck in Standard, Niv-Fires is quite impressive; Ken Yukuhiro has done it again!
