Leader Review for One Piece TCG Set 10: Royal Blood

Reddit

It's that time once again.

After two months without new One Piece TCG products, we have our first double digit set releasing on March 21, 2025. Of course, by double digits, I do mean One Piece Set 10 named Royal Blood. As the first new set of the year, it will bring to us a new round of Leaders all of which align within the Dressrosa or Punk Hazard storyline.

But let's keep the set summary brief and venture on to the leaders within Set 10, Royal Blood!

Starting off with one of our multiple dual color leaders within this set is the mad lad, Caesar Clown.

Caesar Clown upholds the regular stats of a dual color leaders with 5000 power and 4 life with the following leader ability "[DON!! x2] [When Attacking] You may return one of your {Punk Hazard} type Characters with a cost of 2 or more to the owner's hand: K.O. up to 1 of your opponent's Characters with 4000 power or less."

While 2x DON!! Is a hefty toll to pay, this ability does enable some unique On Play abilities while also giving us the opportunity to remove characters from your opponents' boards. Caesar does limit us to Punk Hazard specific characters, however we've seen a few Punk Hazard cards before. One of my favorite call back Characters to play with this leader is actually a Caesar Clown from Set 1 who has an On K.O. ability that allows the player to put a Smiley character from their deck into play

Some excellent Characters to bounce back to hand for a repeating on play trigger would be characters such as Smiley, Mocha, and Caesar Clown.

Following the Punk Hazard theme is another leader, Smoker... But, maybe not the Smoker you expected.

This Smoker leader is a 5000 power 4 life dual color (green and red) leader with the following leader ability "[Opponent's Turn] All of your {Navy} or {Punk Hazard} type Characters gain +1000 power.

[Activate: Main] [Once Per Turn] If you have a Character with 7000 power or more, set up to 2 of your DON!! cards as active."

We haven't seen a Navy based leader in green since Set 4 when Issho was released, and even then the Navy support in green appeared to be... lackluster. Now, coming out of Royal Blood, we will finally get some valuable green Navy characters. Namely, in Smoker and Issho.

Outside of the green Navy support in the set, this Smoker leader also buffs your Navy and Punk Hazard characters during your opponent's turn which allows you a bit of a higher chance of keeping your desirable characters on the board.

We'll move on to our next leader who may not be a native to Punk Hazard but is certainly home to a kingdom we've seen many a times before in the OPTCG, Dressrosa.

Sugar, like the other Multicolored leaders in this set, is a 5000 power 4 life Red/Purple leader with two different leader abilities. Sugar's abilities are "[End of Your Turn] If you have a {Donquixote Pirates} type Character with 6000 power or more, set up to 1 of your DON!! cards as active. [Opponent's Turn] [Once Per Turn] When you activate an Event, add up to 1 DON!! card from your DON!! deck and set it as active."

An Interesting leader to say the least. Sugar requires you to play with Donquixote Characters for her End of turn ability, which isn't overly surprising, but it's interesting that Sugar has an ability that relies on Events. So... what events are good for this leader?

The event trigger only goes off on your opponent's turn, so we have to keep in mind that it sort of limits us to Counter events. But some excellent ones coming out of Set 10 to consider are Ten-Layer Igloo, Divine Departure, and Little Black Bears

Sticking to some of Dressrosa's more memorable characters, we have another Trafalgar Law leader.

Trafalgar Law is a Green/Yellow leader with the same statistics we would regularly see in a multicolored leader, 5000 power and 4 life. This multicolored leader has the ability of "[DON!! x1] [Activate: Main] [Once Per Turn] If the total cost of your Characters is 5 or more, you may return one of your Characters to the owner's hand: Reveal 1 card from the top of your Life cards. If that card is a {Supernovas} type Character card with a cost of 5 or less, you may play that card."

Sticking to Trafalgar Law's common attributes, this Trafalgar Law does return a character back to your hand but it's very conditional. This leader also relies heavily on the Supernova subtype.

Naturally, in Set 10 there is a plethora of yellow Supernova characters. Some of the noteworthy yellow Supernova characters are Trafalgar Law, Basil Hawkins, and Jewelry Bonney.

But we are not done with Dressrosa leaders, oh no. There are two more leaders left for us to discuss in this hodge-podge of a set, and the one we are gonna talk about now is Usopp.

We've gotten a leader for almost every straw hat at this point; Luffy has multiple leaders, Zoro has a single leader card along with a paired leader card with Sanji, Sanji has two single leader cards along with his paired leader card with zoro, Chopper has a leader card, Nami has multiple leader cards (Only one in the west at this time), Nico Robin has a leader, and Jinbe also has an incoming leader for the eastern front at this time. Now, we have Usopp leaving only Franky and Brooke without leader cards.

Usopp is a Blue/Black leader with 5000 power and 4 life that has a static ability and a leader ability. Usopp's static ability is "All of your [Dressrosa] type Characters with a cost of 2 or more gain +1 cost" and a leader ability of "[Opponent's Turn] [Once Per Turn] This effect can be activated when your {Dressrosa} type Character is removed from the field by your opponent's effect or K.O.'d. If you have 5 or less cards in your hand, draw 1 card."

We've seen a lot of removal in character cost in OPTCG's history but we've also seen a bit of an uprise in cost increase over time in the OPTCG.

Like how Trafalgar law relies heavily on Dressrosa character type. There are plenty of excellent Dressrosa cards coming out of this set for Usopp, of course. Namely Zoro, Cavendish, and Rebecca.

Usopp Draws, Usopp Supports Dressrosa, Usopp does... plenty of things.

But, let's wrap up this review with the only mono colored leader within all of Set 10 Eustass "Captain" Kid

One of the last things I ever personally expected was for the character Eustass "Captain" Kid to get a mono YELLOW Leader card, If I am being honest. But, here we are and let's talk about him. Eustass "Captain" Kid has 5 life and 5000 power with the following leader ability "[End of Your Turn] You may turn one card from the top of your Life cards face-up: Set up to 1 of your {Supernovas} type Characters with a cost of 3 to 8 as active. That Character gains [Blocker] until The End of your opponent's next turn." Much like Trafalgar Law leader, Eustass also relies on Supernova characters but doesn't require them to activate his ability.

You need defenses in Yellow? You've already got a Supernova character cost 3 to 8 out? Well, YOU, fellow seafarer, might as well flip over the top card of your life and turn that supernova into a blocker.

But what Supernovas fit perfectly for your blocking purposes? Well, the majority of the cards mentioned for Y/G Law are also excellent characters for this Leader but... we can throw some more honorable mentions into this dish.

Take a look at all these kid pirates.

With all these new leaders, which one appeals to you most?

Until the seas due us part next time, fellow seafarers!
