With Magic: The Gathering's different play styles ranging from aggressive to controlling, there is arguably no other color pairing that does combat better than Boros. This pairing of White and Red is all about martial might, balls to the wall aggro, and a live/die by the sword mentality.
In Commander, aggressive strategies are not as favored. This is because playing against more than one opponent means that risking the ire of a few foes may mean a quick demise. But, the veteran Boros player knows the ropes. And, if you're looking to become such a warrior on the battlefield, well here's the top 5 Boros commanders to helm your next deck.
The 5 Best Boros Commanders for Battle
5. Aurelia, the Warleader
Starting off our list is one of the Boros Legion's very own guild leader: Aurelia. This six-mana 3/4 angel hits fast and stays on the defense with haste, flying, and vigilance. What sweetens the deal is that Aurelia can cause a second attack phase after she attacks during the first time on your turn.
Two attacks in a turn is a big thing when you're out to win via combat damage. Cards that have useful attack triggers are great includes in an Aurelia deck. Think Sun Titan, or Etali, Primal Storm. If you're in the market to end games with just one other card having a Helm of the Host in your deck makes for an infinite combo to get you the win with an infinite number of Aurelias leading your horde. The Sword of Hearth and Home does the same thing, letting you bathe in the blood of your fallen foes in one turn.
4. Wyleth, Soul of Steel
Voltron, the archetype in Commander, that is all about loading up a lone creature with all the enhancements to knock out an opponent is a popular yet flawed strategy. Putting your eggs in one basket and having that basket get destroyed (or exiled, bounced, stolen, etc.) means you're behind on resources.
Well, this three-mana 2/2 trampling human warrior breaks the voltron mold. Wyleth, Soul of Steel has an attack trigger that draws you a card for each Aura and Equipment attached to it. He's a card draw engine and a beatstick in one - what more can a Boros bro want in a commander?
Suiting up Wyleth is made more convenient with Sigarda's Aid, Puresteel Paladin, and Inventory Management. Effective builds will lean more toward equipment like Swiftfoot Boots, Colossus Hammer, and Hammer of Nazahn.
3. Arabella, Abandoned Doll
Duskmourn: House of Horror was one of the better sets of 2024 and one of its best offerings was the creepy legendary artifact Toy, Arabella, Abandoned Doll. This two-mana 1/3 only has one simple yet painful ability: whenever it attacks, it deals X damage to all your opponents and you gain X life equal to the number of creatures you control that have 2 or less power. It is also painfully obvious how to build around Arabella - by amassing an army of weenies to deal the maximum amount of hurt. Thankfully, Boros has to be one of the most proficient in token production in the entire game. Creatures like Anim Pakal, Thousandth Moon, Adeline, Resplendent Cathar, and Siege-Gang Lieutenant bring a lot of fodder to the party. And old reliables like Assemble the Legion and Anointed Procession can bring you an army in a jiffy.
Impact Tremors and Purphoros, God of the Forge, and Agate Instigator are also pingers that don't even need Arabella on the battlefield to bring the pain.
2. Winota, Joiner of Forces
If this were strictly a competitive Commander list (cEDH), our number 2 pick would be at the top of the list. But, we're talking about the format as a whole so Winota, Joiner of Forces has to settle for the top two slot. This 4 mana 4/4 Human Warrior triggers on attack (surprise, surprise) but counts only non-Human creatures going into the fray. For each of those attackers, you will look at the top 6 cards of your deck and put a Human into play tapped, attacking, and indestructible.
As most Boros decks, Winota focuses on the red zone but what makes her powerful is she cheats mana costs by putting stuff in for free. Hatebears is a potent and common strategy for Winota players as they want to make all their opponents have a hard time playing so that they can continue bashing in for free. Choice creatures would be Archon of Emeria, Aven Mindcensor, and Dauntless Dismantler.
Eidolon of Rhetoric is perfect to get out as Winota doesn't really need to cast a lot of spells - she just needs her army to attack.
1. Feather, the Redeemed
We started the list with an angel and we're ending with another one as Feather, the Redeemed is the Boros baddie of choice when it comes to bashing in the red zone. What's unique about Feather is that no other commander to date has a similar ability as hers. She costs three mana, flies, and is decently statted at 3/4. She has a static ability that basically lets you keep getting back instants and sorceries that you've cast on a creature at the end of your turn.
Combat tricks and protection spells are what keeps Feather decks humming. Defiant Strike, Shelter, and Expedite are cantrips that are absolute trash in other decks. But that's the beauty of Feather, too. She's pretty cheap to build. If you have a Sunforger out then it's tutor time, baby. Feather is a voltron, spellslinging, and value machine like no other - Boros or otherwise.
Battle-ready Boros, Baby
Dominating the battlefield is what Boros commanders do best. Disregard most of their angelic appearances (looking at you Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, Aurelia, the Law Above, and Archangel Avacyn), these Boros baddies are built for battle. Boros brings a fiery passion to every clash, reminding us that the heart of Magic: The Gathering beats strongest when the red zone is aflame with action.
