New Year's Eve isn't the only time you can expect a dazzling fireworks display. In Magic: The Gathering, the Izzet color combination (Red and Blue) provides its own brand of explosive entertainment. Think of it as a magical pyrotechnic show, where every spell cast is a burst of color and energy.
If you're the type of player who gets a thrill out of chaining spells together like a string of firecrackers, then you're in for a treat. Here are the top 5 Izzet commanders guaranteed to set off some sparks.
5. Mizzix of the Izmagnus
Commander 2015 brought us our number 5 pick in Mizzix of the Izmagnus. This 2/2 goblin wizard was 4 mana experience counting beast (no, not of that creature type!) in that its strength was in reducing the costs of spells. Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery that had greater mana value than your current experience counters, you'd get a counter more. Then, you get a discount of 1 generic mana for each experience counter that you'd get to put towards instants or sorceries.
Mizzix likes big spells and he cannot lie - particularly X spells that scale further because of the mana reduction. Draw a staggering amount of cards with Stroke of Genius, Finale of Revelation, or Blue Sun's Zenith. You can also blow the table up with Comet Storm, Jaya's Immolating Inferno, or Banefire. Mizzix also makes good use of proliferate so chuck Tezzeret's Gambit and Inexorable Tide into that deck!
4. The Locust God
At times, players who cast so many spells can be a pest to their opponents. You know the type, casting their 12th spell on your upkeep. Well, with The Locust God, any Izzet planeswalker CAN be an actual pest! Err.. God. For 6 mana, this 4/4 flying god all the way from Hour of Devastation creates a 1/1 insect (with flying and haste) whenever you draw a card. It can even loot for 4 mana, enabling the token making by itself. It is also able to circumvent commander tax in a way if it dies because it returns to your hand at the end step.
Drawing a lot of cards is the way to go because The Locust God can slowly build its army - meaning you can focus on that amazing feeling of drawing cards and not worry about not establishing board presence. Cheap card draw is good here: Brainstorm, Faithless Looting, and Opt in particular. Draw X spells like Pull From Tomorrow and Transcendent Message can also give you board and card advantage at instant speed. Such a pest indeed.
3. Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain
It is at this point that I shall admit that I am the type of Magic player that is addicted to the feeling of drawing a card. Getting to draw a card for casting anything and everything (as long as you build your deck right!) is something that Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain does really well. For 4 mana, this 3/3 human artificer from Dominaria is a value engine plain and simple. Jhoira cares about historic spells (read: artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas are historic) so those card types should be plenty in your deck.
Low-cost artifacts are your best friends: Mishra's Bauble, Ornithopter, Urza's Bauble, and Welding Jar are all free card draw artifacts. With all that card draw, it is not hard to find a wincon. But if you're struggling to think of any, Psychosis Crawler can be your default in this oops-i-draw-10 deck.
2. Veyran, Voice of Duality
We're nearing the top, so power levels are getting higher. Veyran, Voice of Duality is an objectively powerful spell slinging commander no whether you're in a casual or competitive table. For 3 mana, you get a 2/2 efreet wizard that gets +1/+1 until end of turn for each instant or sorcery you cast. But Veyran's real power lies in its other ability that doubles a triggered ability if casting or copying an instant or sorcery does so the first time - like a... Panharmonicon for spells.
Leaning in to the spell copying means you get to maximize cards such as Ral, Storm Conduit, Thousand-Year Storm, and Narset's Reversal. But if you really want to crank it up to the nth level, then Jeska's Will and Reiterate will win you the game on the spot. Talk about firepower.
1. Stella Lee, Wild Card
2024's Outlaws of Thunder Junction gave us what is Izzet's most powerful commander: ol' Stella Lee, Wild Card. This cowbabe is a 3 mana 2/4 human rogue that has 2 abilities. Her first is a triggered ability that cares about the second spell you cast each turn, letting you exile a from the top of your library and cast it until your next turn. Her second ability lets her copy an instant or sorcery spell if its the 3rd one cast that turn... all for a free tap!
Needless to say, Stella Lee is a spellslinging queen. So much so that Veyran, Voice of Duality works amazingly in her 99. All your low cost spellslinger cards go in her deck. Removal? Think Pongify and Rapid Hybridization. Card draw? Gitaxian Probe, Treasure Cruise, and Preordain baby. With Stella Lee, you need to have a critical mass of spells. Winning is varied: make tokens with Rise of the Dragoncaller or Talrand, Sky Summoner. Ping 'em to death with Niv-Mizzet, Parun. The options are endless with this wild card.
Pyrotechnic Party
These five Izzet commanders offer a range of playstyles, from building a massive token army to copying spells with reckless abandon - things that all spellslingers love. No matter your preference, there's an Izzet commander out there waiting to unleash a dazzling pyrotechnic display on your opponents. So grab your deck, light the fuse, and get ready to party!
