Top Noncreature Artifact in Each Color for Commander
Artifacts, every deck has 'em and every deck should have removal for 'em. More than the mana rocks you run, artifacts are a great permanent type to run because there are a number of spells and effects that let you tutor them up or recur them from the graveyard. We're not talking about creature artifacts though for this list, we're focusing on these magical trinkets that any Magic: The Gathering player should have in their arsenal.
Here are the best colored noncreature artifacts that you should include in your commander decks.
White: Halo Fountain
Our list starts with this win-con in a card from Streets of New Capenna - Halo Fountain. This is a three mana artifact that is a no-brainer in token decks. Halo Fountain has three activated abilities that are relevant in many stages of a Commander game. It is strange that it requires you to untap a tapped creature to activate all of its abilities - but that's an easy requirement for an aggressive White deck. Its first ability gives you a 1/1 White (and Green - thank the Blind Eternities there is no Green mana symbol anywhere on this card!) Citizen token. The second ability lets you draw a card. The third ability wins you the game. Yup, just straight up victory. Okay, you have to untap fifteen tapped creatures but with cards like Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation // Temple of Civilization and Anointed Procession boosting your token production - this is pretty achievable.
Blue: Midnight Clock
Our pick for Blue is not a win-con but it does help Blue out in the late game - where most control players plan to win. Throne of Eldraine brought Midnight Clock, a mana rock that produces a single Blue mana when tapped. When the clock strikes twelve though (read: when twelve time counters are put on it), you exile Midnight Clock and get to shuffle both your hand and your graveyard into your library. There are two ways to put counters on this card: the first is to tap 2 generic and 1 Blue mana to put a counter on it. The other? Well, you get a free counter on your upkeep. The clock does tick by itself, you see.
Permanent based ramp in Blue is not very common, so Midnight Clock feels in that spot rather well. The draw seven is amazing when paired with commanders that care about card draw - think Niv-Mizzet, Parun or The Locust God.
Black: Bolas's Citadel
For the color that cares about power regardless of the cost, Bolas's Citadel is a perfect fit. This War of the Spark Legendary Artifact costs 6 whopping mana but with the proper card with it (Aetherflux Reservoir), it combos off quite fast.
Bolas's Citadel lets you look at the top card of your deck at any time. Then, if you so wish, you can play that card by paying life equal to its mana cost. Its last ability lets you tap it and sacrifice ten other permanents to blast every opponent for 10 life.
This card generates so much advantage and it just feels so plain cool to pay life to play a card from the top of your deck. With three pips of mana in the Citadel's casting cost, it does mean that you must play a deck that is heavily committed to the color Black. With the aforementioned Aetherflux Reservoir out, you can churn through the top card of your deck - provided you don't get hit with clumps of land that you can't play many of. If you're facing a Mono-Black commander deck like K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth or his daddy Yawgmoth, Thran Physician - you can bet that a Bolas's Citadel is in the 99.
Red: Cursed Mirror
Similar to Midnight Clock in Blue, our pick for Red is also a three mana artifact that can tap for one mana. However, Commander 2021's Cursed Mirror is the opposite of the clock since it has an immediate effect when it enters the battlefield. This mirror copies any creature on the battlefield - yes, not just your own - and gives them haste until end of turn.
This is a very flexible artifact since you can choose something that has an amazing enters the battlefield effect. Want to smash face? Then copy that Craterhoof Behemoth! Want to get something back from the graveyard? Copy that Eternal Witness. You can event imitate opposing commanders that generate massive card advantage like Atraxa, Grand Praetor or Pantlaza, Sun-Favored. Now that is sure to make your opponent shout: "Curses!"
Green: The Great Henge
It ramps (for two mana!), it gains life, it beefs up your creatures, and it draws you a lot of cards... iiiiiit's The Great Henge! This nine mana Legendary Artifact from Throne of Eldraine does so much for so little cost. In a creature-heavy deck, this usually gets discounted by at least four mana when you have creatures out, meaning that you can run this out earlier than expected. The Great Henge fits in any deck that is creature-centric or blink decks. This card is so powerful that there is hardly an argument to not running it in your Green deck. It's good in the early game if you can power it out, amazing in the midgame to get ahead of your opponents, and it's also great late game when you're digging for the win.
Gadgets and Gizmos Aplenty
Artifacts are pretty powerful in Commander and that is why everyone packs a couple of spells to take them out. But, sometimes you have to risk getting an artifact blown up if you want to overpower your opponents at the table.
