Bloomburrow has just dropped and like many Commander enthusiasts, we're all combing through the legendary creatures to see which shiny new deck we can build. But hold it, you don't want to be transformed into an animal right? You don't have to step into the forests of Bloomburrowto know what the best legendaries are. I've traveled to the plane and back with a list for ya. And believe you me, I had to spend find out the hard way that being a frog ain't all that its croaked up to be.
What is the best though? Every Magic: the Gathering player has their own biases. Here's mine: I like playing commanders that let me do two things: get value or let me play cards that I like in different colors. So, the list below are chock-full of value-granting multi-color creatures.
Let's hop to it.
Baylen, the Haymaker
Tokens and Commander, is there a more inseparable pair? This archetype grows better as new cards are released and Baylen, the Haymaker is another amazing token-centric commander option. This three mana 4/3 Rabbit Warrior has three sweet activated abilities. Tapping two tokens gives you one mana of any color. Tapping three draws you a card. Tapping four grows Baylen into rabbit that can really throw haymakers.
Baylen ramps, draws, and smashes. What more can a Naya player want?
To give get maximum value out of the abilities, untappers like Seedborn Muse, Quest for Renewal, and Drumbellower lets the Rabbit do its thing every turn.
Mass token makers Farmer Cotton, Artifact Mutation, Second Harvest, and March of the Multitudes are auto-includes. While token doublers (read: commander token staples) such as Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, and Anointed Procession are no-brainers.
With Baylen, you don't even have to be locked into producing token creatures. Any token whether it be a Clue, Food, or Treasure, works!
Helga, Skittish Seer
For a small critter, Helga Skittish Seer like to do big splashy things. This 1/3 Frog Druid cares about creatures - but not just any creature, this seer cares about those past the four mana value point.
For three mana (one of each that make Bant), the wee froggy packs two abilities that bring joy to Timmy hearts all over the Blind Eternities. Whenever you cast a big boi, Helga draws you a card, gains you life, and gets a +1/+1 counter.
But wait, there's more! Tapping Helga give you X mana equal to its power. Sure you can only use it to cast big creatures but this is pure icing!
Pairing Helga up with cards that care about the number four is a sound plan. Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma is first up the list with Garruk's Uprising right behind the bear.
Cards that increase Helga's power can also amplify the mana it can generate. You can go the +1/+1 counter route with cards like Hardened Scales, Benevolent Hydra, and Court of Garenbrig are top tier options.
For big creatures, the sky is the limit (well, sometimes it can be the mana value of X that Helga produces) but on the shortlist are Silverback Elder, Fanatic of Rhonas, and Defiler of Vigor. This frog commander is also a good friend to Hydras! Just take a look at Goldvein Hydra, Hydroid Krasis, and Benevolent Hydra.
With how much Helga impacts the table one thing is clear: skittish Helga is definitely not.
The Infamous Cruelclaw
Commander players who like big impactful cards are eating with Bloomburrow. The Infamous Cruelclaw may only be a 3/3 for three with menace but this Rakdos baddie can be downright mean. When this Weasel Mercenery draws blood, you exile cards from the top of your library and the first nonland card you hit can be cast for free. Free!
Technically, you have to discard a card rather than pay the cost. But, what is pitching a card to the graveyard for a deck that runs Swamps?
Drawing blanks as to what cards you'd feel okay discard a card to play for free? Here are some: Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger. Kozilek, the Great Distortion. Emrakul, the Promised End.
Picture ain't clear yet? How about Ulamog, the Defiler, Kozilek, the Butcher of Truth, and Artisan of Kozilek?
The Infamous Cruelclaw is an Eldrazi-loving commander through and through!
If tentacle monsters aren't your thing, then big hitters Etali, Primal Storm, Cityscape Leveler, and Blightsteel Colossus can close games out on behalf of the menacing Cruelclaw.
Additional combat steps lets you spin the wheel more times, so enter: Seize the Day, Relentless Assault, World at War and crew.
Add a bit of top deck manipulation like the ever-dependable Sensei's Divining Top and Scroll Rack and you can mitigate the randomness somewhat.
If you get one win with this commander, you will for sure be infamous among your playgroup.
Ms. Bumbleflower
Here's a commander that can make you famous and loved around the table (until you smack em on the head with a flying beatstick). Ms. Bumbleflower is a group hug commander that really brings the delight. This four mana 1/5 doesn't hit hard (yet) but gives opponents a card whenever you cast a spell. She can also give a +1/+1 counter on any creature and they gain temporary flying too. Both of those abilities are boons you can leverage if you're a politically savvy commander player. But, if you play your second spell that turn, you get to draw two cards.
Ms. Bumbleflower is an interesting build around for sure. Bloomburrow isn't short on group hug treats, especially with the new Gift a card mechanic.
Cards like Tempt with Bunnies, Wear Down, Parting Gust, and Peerless Recycling push you ahead of the table without leatting it seem too obvious. And that's group hug agenda 101: keep your opponent thinking that you are indispensable or at least the last one on their hitlist.
To keep the chances of triggering this Rabbit Citizen's abilities, you'd want low mana value spells to cast. Thankfully, there are many spells in Bant that fulfill many roles. Ramp spells Farseek, Three Visits, and Cultivate are there for any green infused deck. Removal staples like Path to Exile, Pongify, and Generous Gift stay on theme by giving back to your opponent. Permission spells Arcane Denial, Swan Song, and Strix Serenade negate your opponent's game plan but reduce the feelbads somewhat.
When it's all said and done - and your opponents hugged out, Ms. Bumbleflower can swing for the fences like the best of them (assuming you dropped all the +1/+1 counters in her basket).
Ms. Bloomburrow, err, Bumbleflower actually plays well with Nadu, Winged Wisdom but I think I should stop here.
A Forestful of Possibilities
With so many fine furry and super slimy legendary creatures from Bloomburrow, it can be quite daunting to find which one is the Thickest in the Thicket. My list focuses on the best value commanders in the multicolor sphere. A couple that didn't make this list would be Lumra, Bellow of the Woods (lands matters), Dragonhawk, Fate's Tempest (big dragon!), and Maha, Its Feathers Night (mean owl).
Truly, this set has something for every Timmy, Spike, or Johnny.
So, which legendary creature from Bloomburrow has your commander noggin brewing up a storm? (No, not you Alania, Divergent Storm!)
