The Top Five Selesnya Commanders

Reddit

Selesnya, the pairing of Green and White mana in Magic: The Gathering, might evoke images of serene forests and harmony, but don't be fooled - this guild knows how to bring the heat. With powerful enchantment synergies, creature buffs through +1/+1 counters, and overwhelming token armies, Selesnya can dominate the battlefield in its own formidable way.

Here are the Top Five Selesnya commanders who may look peaceful, but hit harder than you would expect.

Number Five

Captain Sisay

The story of the Weatherlight saga was epic and any Magic player in that era was rooting for Captain Sisay's crew. 2000's Invasion set brought the captain to life with a 2/2 card that could tutor up a legendary card whenever it taps. Think of any legendary creature in Selesnya colors and you'd get to Eladamri's Call it to your hand. We're talking Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, Selvala, Heart of the Wilds, Myrel, Shield of Argive, and even any of the creatures on this list!

Captain Sisay can get legendary lands (looking at you, Boseiju, Who Endures), artifacts, enchantments, basically any legendary permanent. Captain Sisay bring the whole party out - one card at a time.

Number Four

Rhys the Redeemed

Few color pairs can make tokens as efficiently as Selesnya. Rhys the Redeemed is an OG token maker all the way from Shadowmoor. This 1/1 has two activated abilities: three mana and a tap give you a 1/1/ Elf Warrior and 6 mana plus a tap creates a token copy of every token you control. What's even cooler is that Rhys costs only one mana! He's a token generator and a Doubling Season in one card - that's available early from your command zone.

Profit from all the tokens Rhys makes with Caretaker's Talent, Shamanic Revelation, Camaraderie, and Cathars' Crusade. Boost token production with Mondrak, Glory Dominus, Parallel Lives, and Anointed Procession. Then, close the game out with Craterhoof Behemoth or Moonshaker Cavalry. Running Rhys as your general is a no-brainer if you enjoy token strategies.

Number Three

Emiel the Blessed

Enters the battlefield triggers are pretty potent in Magic because you get an effect and a body (if we're talking creatures) that stays on the field. Enter Emiel: this 4/4 Unicorn for four mana can blink any other creature you control for three generic mana. And, whenever a creature enters, you can pay 1 mana to give it a +1/+1 counter.

Green and white have no shortage of amazing creatures with enters the battlefield triggers: Eternal Witness, Sun Titan, Knight of Autumn, Skyclave Apparition, and Loran of the Third Path lead the value crew.

Doubling up on enters triggers only takes your power to a whole 'nother level, these cards are perfect picks for that: Panharmonicon, Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines, and Preston, the Vanisher makes sure you get double the goodies. Throw in a couple more blink enablers like Ephemerate, Conjurer's Closet, Restoration Angel, and Teleportation Circle to get things cooking. Emiel is a literal beast that is the top three pick for this list.

Number Two

Karametra, God of Harvests

Theros brought us our first God creature cards. These were enchantment creatures that were hard to get rid of due to being indestructible but would only become creatures when their devotion requirements were met. Of the gods, Karametra is one of the stronger ones in Commander being a beefy body that had a trigger that Selesnya players love. With Karametra out on the field, every creature you cast grabs a Forest or Plains card and puts them into play tapped. These don't just count basics but also lands such as Temple Garden, Lush Portico, Arctic Treeline, Radiant Grove, and Sunpetal Grove. Sad that these lands come into play tapped? Spelunking is an enchantment that can make your lands come into play tapped so that you can chain a few more castings of creatures. What this means is that Karametra is technically drawing you lands and putting them onto the battlefield in effect, ramping you.

With all of the ramping she does, Landfall is a pretty powerful tactic to lean into. Lotus Cobra, Rampaging Baloths, Scute Swarm, Tireless Provisioner, and the rest of the Landfall allstars would worship well at the altar of this goddess. Karametra will ensure that you have a bountiful harvest with which to beat your opponents.

Number One

Sythis, Harvest's Hand

Modern Horizons 2 introduced us to Karametra's top acolyte, the 2/2 Nymph that tops this list: Sythis. For years, enchantress aficionados had to settle for drawing one card a turn from Tuvasa the Sunlit's ability until Sythis, Harvest's Hand was released. For a mere two mana, Sythis draws you a card for each enchantment spell you cast - with a side bonus of gaining you a life.

Drawing an absurd amount of cards is what Sythis does best and pairing her up with cards such as Enchantress's Presence, Setessan Champion, Eidolon of Blossoms, and Satyr Enchanter only maximizes your card advantage engine.

Enchantment based removal options are aplenty with Song of the Dryads, Kenrith's Transformation, and Darksteel Mutation being the cream of the crop.

Other permanents that help you grab the win by generating tokens are Sigil of the Empty Throne and Archon of Sun's Grace. Protecting your enchantments are key as you not only have access to Teferi's Protection or Herioc Intervention but enchantments like Sterling Grove and Privileged Position also trigger Sythis ability.

Your hands will be full for the harvesting with the top Selesnya commander, Sythis, as your general.

Nature's Wrath

These Selesnya commanders prove that nature's harmony can be utilized to bash your opponents' heads in at a Commander table. So, take your pick and you'll be sure to have an enchanting time building around the Top 5 Selesnya commanders.
