Seize the Day: Commander Staples That Unlock Extra Combat Power

Reddit

There's a unique thrill Magic: The Gathering players feel when they swing into combat, whether it's for an alpha strike or just to send a message. In Commander, that thrill is even greater with multiple opponents on the battlefield, each a potential target for your offensive maneuvers. And when one combat step isn't enough to quench your thirst for victory, adding extra combat phases becomes the ultimate power move. Ready to double down on the chaos? Here are the essential Commander staples to help you dominate the battlefield with more combat steps.

Bloodthirsty Generals

Let's start off by listing the top Commanders that wade into the fray the best.

Isshin, Two Heavens as One

This three mana 3/4 Human Samurai doubles triggers that is caused by an attacking creature. He's an engine that gets you double the effect and there's plenty in his Mardu colors all the way from making tokens to making treasures.

Aurelia, the Warleader

An OG extra combat steps commander, this 3/4 angel is a six mana flying, vigilant, and hasty combat enabler. Whenever she attacks for the first time, you untap your entire team and get to swing in again. Having haste means that you already benefit from Aurelia the turn you cast her.

Narset, Enlightened Master

This infamous Jeskai commander has an activated ability that screams overpowered as she lets you cast any of the top four nonland cards she exiles when she attacks - for free. She's not the cheapest creature at five mana and her 3/2 body seems fragile but havin first strike and hexproof gives Narset extreme staying power. Having access to Blue opens her up to extra turn spells and not just extra combat.

Godo, Bandit Warlord

A classic mono-red commander that was a cEDH mainstay for a while. Godo gives you an extra combat step and also tutors an equipment onto the battlefield! If you don't know that this combos with Helm of the Host, where have you been?

Extra, Extra, We're All About It!

Now that we have the generals out of the way, here are the best extra combat spells that you can stuff your decks with.

Spells

Any of the following sorceries will help you attack and attack and attack: Relentless Assault, Seize the Day, Great Train Heist (okay this is an instant but you only get the extra combat if cast on your turn), World at War, Overpowering Attack, Savage Beating, Waves of Aggression, and Fury of the Horde.

If you're looking for more permanent solutions, don't worry, a mix of enchantments and creatures share you bloodthirst. These creatures would be the best additions to your army: Combat Celebrant, Bloodthirster, Moraug, Fury of Akoum, Karlach, Fury of Avernus, Anzrag, the Quake-Mole, Akki Battle Squad, Port Razer, and Fear of Missing Out.

For enchantments, there's Aggravated Assault, Breath of Fury, and the non-red Finest Hour.

Painful Payoffs

What's a brutal planeswalker like you to do with all the extra attacks? Well, there are a number of ways to inflict more pain on your opponents. More mana to pump into your Aggravated Assault and Hellkite Charger can be gathered from Old Gnawbone, Savage Ventmaw, Grand Warlod Radha, Druids' Repository, and Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient.

Giving your army a massive buff is also a potent payoff that you can get from cards such as Pathbreaker Ibex, Blossoming Bogbeast, Beastmaster Ascension, Fervent Charge, and Sovereign Okinec Ahau.

Refilling your hand as you wade into yet another fray is another ability that is essential in combat. Here are the best cards to have: Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Akiri, Fearless Voyager, Chivalric Alliance, Aurelia, the Law Above, Toski, Bearer of Secrets, and Bident of Thassa. Well, those last two trigger when they deal damage but with all that combat - you will definitely get some hits in.

Damage and lifeloss from attacking is also a nasty way to pile on the hurt with cards like Hellrider, Brutal Hordechief, Campaign of Vengeance, and Commissar Severina Raine.

Another very powerful way to leverage extra combat steps is making your army more massive with token generators. There are many of these cards but the cream of this combative crop are Adeline, Resplendent Cathar, Caesar, Legion's Emperor, Grave Titan, Legion Loyalty, Anim Pakal, Thousandth Moon, Echoing Assault, and Mardu Ascendancy.

And if you want more damage dealt, you simply cannot go wrong with Furnace of Wrath, City on Fire, Dictate of the Twin Gods, and Gratuitous Violence.

Combat is King

Whew! That was quite the lineup of combat-focused staples. And believe it or not, there are even more incredible cards out there for decks built around maximizing combat steps.
